Many Hollywood celebrities seem to have spontaneously sprouted in Los Angeles. While a lot of celebrities are from the Los Angeles area, many are from small towns across the nation who move out while they’re young to make their dream a reality. Occasionally, they speak a bit about where they’re originally from or make reference to certain family members and traditions, but in general, most Hollywood celebrities are fairly individual entities in the public eye. For the most part, that is. You see, there are a few Hollywood families whose entire family dinner could be captured by the paparazzi, because nearly everyone in the family is a powerful influencer in the entertainment industry.
Some of these families have achieved an enormous amount of fame and fortune over the generations, and have a proud lineage of Hollywood A-List actors, producers, and directors in their family tree. And then, there are the new breed of Hollywood royalty – families who have risen to superstardom as a family unit, either by working on projects such as reality television shows together, or successfully pursuing individual projects – or, in many cases, both.
We all know about the British royal family, but when it comes to Hollywood, there is a whole different breed of celebrity royal families, in which every member is endlessly watched and stalked by the paparazzi. Here are 10 of the most powerful Hollywood families.
10. The Osbournes
Before the Kardashians urged the entire world to keep up with their pursuits, there were the Osbournes, the original reality television family. On paper, it seemed a bit strange – sure, everyone was interested in seeing the private life of notorious Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne, thanks to his larger than life personality. But would the rest of his family be interesting? Turns out they were – viewers tuned in week after week to see Sharon, Kelly, and Jack. The show brought each family member into the public eye, and they’ve managed to turn that into larger success in the entertainment industry. Sharon Osbourne has become a daytime television staple, co-hosting The Talk, and Kelly became a darling of the E! network on the delightfully catty Fashion Police. Even Jack, who has maintained a bit of a lower profile, has had a series of acting gigs.
9. The Mann-Apatows
Judd Apatow is the force behind some of the biggest comedy films of the past decade – The 40-Year-Old Virgin, This Is 40, Knocked Up, Anchorman, Superbad, Bridesmaids… the list is truly endless. He’s even a producer on Lena Dunham’s hit HBO series Girls. His body of work is diverse, but there’s one common factor – it’s hilarious and has earned him millions of fans. However, don’t think that he’s the only one bringing home the bacon – his wife, actress Leslie Mann, has a successful career of her own and is one of the queens of comedy. Naturally, she’s snagged several roles in her husband’s films – they’re a comedy dream team. The duo have two daughters, who we expect will reach superstardom as they grow up – their eldest daughter, Maude, is already on the path, with several small film roles and tens of thousands of follower son social media.
8. The Sheen-Estevezes
It’s incredibly difficult to succeed in the entertainment industry, but several members of the Sheen-Estevez family have managed to do just that. Martin Sheen, the patriarch of the group, had a long film career with over 250 roles under his belt. It’s safe to say he definitely made an impact on the film industry, and his two sons would soon step up to try and fill their father’s shoes. Emilio Estevez, the older of the two, exploded in popularity in the 1980s and 1990s as a member of the Brat Pack. While his career has been a bit quieter in the decades since then, countless movie lovers still adore Estevez. His brother, Charlie Sheen, is best known for his baffling and often insane behavior, but let’s not forget that he was a huge television star for awhile thanks to his lead role on hit sitcom Two and a Half Men.
7. The Sutherlands
Donald Sutherland has had a long career spanning over half a century with roles in hit films and television series including MASH, JFK, National Lampoon’s Animal House, Ordinary People and more. However, he isn’t the only Sutherland to walk the red carpet – his son, Kiefer, made it onto the A-List himself thanks to a starring role as Jack Bauer on hit series 24. Hang on, though, that’s not where it ends – Rossif Sutherland (another one of Donald’s sons, and Kiefer’s half brother) has also been making a splash in Hollywood in the past few years, snagging a few roles in both film and television.
6. The Smiths
While The Smith family may have one of the most common names in America, the level of success that every member of the family has obtained is definitely not common. First, the patriarch, Will Smith – he got his start in the late 80s as rapper The Fresh Prince, and quickly snagged an iconic role in sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He eventually turned that success into a big Hollywood film career. His wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, has snagged roles in the television series Hawthorne and in the Madagascar film franchise. Jaden, their son, has had a successful film career as well, starring in The Karate Kid and alongside dad in The Pursuit of Happyness. Finally, their daughter, Willow, put out the smash hit single “Whip My Hair,” and has been dabbling in music and acting as well.
5. The Hawn-Hudsons
Goldie Hawn was basically the prototype for every bubbly blonde rom-com star to grace the screen nowadays. Throughout her career, Hawn snagged countless roles as the loveable, fun, beautiful female character in films like Overboard, The First Wives Club and more. She’s famous for her long-time relationship with Kurt Russell, who helped Hawn raise her children Kate and Oliver. Kate Hudson went on to achieve superstardom just like her mother, starring in Almost Famous and countless romantic comedies. While not quite as well known as his sister, actor Oliver Hudson has also had a respectable career with roles in Rules of Engagement, Nashville and more.
4. The Barrymores
Those who are only aware of the current generation of Hollywood starlets may think Drew Barrymore came from an ordinary, average family, but that’s about as far from the truth as you could get. Acting is in the Barrymore blood, and her family tree has four generations of entertainers. Barrymore’s great-grandparents were actors, her great-aunt Ethel was a stage actress in Britain and the U.S., her great-uncle Lionel was a character actor and director with over 200 film credits to his name, her grandfather John was an absolute Hollywood superstar in the 1920s and 30s, her grandmother Dolores was a silent-screen star, and even her parents were actors. I mean, it would almost be ridiculous for Drew to have pursued any other career path – it’s pretty much meant to be with a lineage like that.
3. The Jolie-Pitt-Voights
While Angelina Jolie and her father Jon Voight might not always have had the best relationship, there’s no doubting that he’s a talented actor. However, his daughter wasn’t content to let dad be the only A-Lister in the family – she quickly rose to superstardom with a wide variety of film roles, and along the way, met her husband, fellow A-Lister Brad Pitt. Pitt is also an absolute superstar, and has recently been transitioning from acting into producing (he was one of the producers behind the mega-hit 12 Years a Slave). You could try to list some of the biggest films the duo have been in, but we’d be here for days – they’ve truly had sensational careers. However, all eyes are on their brood of children. We’re betting the Jolie-Pitt kids all end up doing something incredible and continuing the family legacy, if not outshining their parents.
2. The Coppolas
The Coppolas are basically Hollywood royalty. In fact, they hold the distinction of being one of the few Hollywood families to win Oscars in three generations. So who exactly makes up this talented crew? Well, Francis Ford Coppola is perhaps the best known, the creative force behind The Godfather: Part II. His father, Carmine Coppola, worked on the film as well – he created the score. Then came Sofia Coppola, a female powerhouse behind films like Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette. A few actors in the family include Nicholas Cage and Jason Schwartzman, who are both nephews of Francis Ford Coppola. And finally, the legacy continues with Gia, the granddaughter of Francis Ford, who snagged her directing debut with Palo Alto.
1. The Kardashian-Jenner-Wests
Okay, let’s be serious – when you talk about powerful families in Hollywood, there’s one that comes to mind immediately, partly due to their sheer size. That’s right – we’re talking about the Kardashian-Jenners. The Kardashians were somewhat known in Hollywood as socialites in the early 2000s, and when momager Kris Kardashian managed to snag a reality show for the family – the uber popular Keeping Up With The Kardashians – every family member was catapulted to superstardom. Kim, Khloe, Kourtney, and Rob make up the Kardashian side of the family, while Kris, Caitlyn (formerly Bruce), Kendall, and Kylie make up the Jenner side. Besides the show, they have endorsement deals, modelling gigs, and more. The newest addition to the family? Kim’s husband, superstar rapper Kanye West, and their daughter, North West. We have a feeling this family’s empire will continue to build and build.
