5 Most Expensive Celebrity Marijuana Habits

It’s a well-worn debate: To legalize, or not to legalize? Of course in this instance we’re talking about weed, and it seems that America is finally at a tipping point towards more legalization reforms. With the common knowledge that prohibition has failed to control the use and production of marijuana – along with the disproportionate numbers of ethnic minorities being arrested for possession, the fact that a regulated, legal weed market is taxable, the medicinal qualities, the list of reasons to legalise goes on – it simply doesn’t seem viable in this day-and-age to continue this arbitrary and failing War on Drugs.

That being said, some people clearly enjoy weed much more than others, to the point that it may well interfere with their lifestyles. To each their own, of course – and when you’re a rich and famous celebrity, and you like marijuana, you have the means and capabilities to smoke and buy as much as you could possibly want. We’re not talking a few hundred dollars a month (which is pretty regular for avid smokers), but more like thousands of dollars a week.

The five celebrity musicians on this list all have very successful careers, so it’s impossible to conjecture that marijuana has hurt them (besides for occasional legal troubles). It’s even harder to find empirical data about how much these celebrities are spending on weed, because some people simply don’t like to talk about that, don’t know, or don’t want to pigeonhole themselves through lame tabloid headlines. That’s why there are five people instead of 50 on this list, because we will simply never know how much Willie Nelson, Cheech and Chong, and other celebrated celebrity stoners are really smoking – but based on these celeb examples, we can always guess.

5. ScHoolboy Q – $6,000/month

ScHoolboy Q (born Quincey Matthew Hanley) is a 27-year old rapper from South Central Los Angeles with a bright future. After first signing with indie label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) in 2009, things have only gotten better for this up-and-comer. In 2011, he was spotted by major label Interscope Records and signed with them, and after years of releasing mixtapes and independent records, his first major-label debut, titled Oxymoron, came in at number one on the US Billboard 200 at the beginning of the year. He’s also good friends with label-mate Kendrick Lamar, and they’re even in a band together called Black Hippy.

The man is also a big advocate of the sticky icky. The rapper claims to spend six grand on weed every month, an amount that he feels guilty about. As he told HipHopDx.com, “It’s a little selfish in a sense, because I got homies that’s broke. I got my momma. As much money as I done spent [on marijuana], I could have bought my momma a new place, a new car.”

He says that he gets about an ounce every other day, but that’s he’s generous with his ganja, sharing it with his friends who don’t make as much money as he does. He also acknowledged that he’d like to quit smoking, but that it just isn’t in the cards right now: “I haven’t tried not smoking weed and rapped yet… I said I want to quit… [Weed] mellows you out.”

4. Robin Thicke – $500,000

This guy is a bit of a surprise entry. The 37-year old singer-songwriter rose to worldwide fame with his 2013 hit single “Blurred Lines,” and his subsequent 2013 Beetlejuice-inspired VMA stint with worldwide-twerker Miley Cyrus. Even though his name is relatively new to the mainstream, Thicke has been in the music industry for over 20 years. He got his start when Brian McKnight got a hold of the then-14 year old’s demo, and he hasn’t stopped chugging along since then. He signed a contract with Interscope Records at the age of 16, moved out on his own at 17, and has collaborated with some of the world’s biggest artists since then.

After being arrested in 2012 for possession, Robin Thicke’s love for weed became public knowledge in an interview with Britain’s The Sun, and what he admitted shocked a lot of people. “I do smoke,” he told The Sun, “I do everything I’m not supposed to do. Weed is my crutch, my muse, the lesser of all evil. I’ve spent a good $500,000 on pot. I’ve tried to quit smoking. I’ve quit everything once.” $500,000!

While the number might be a bit exaggerated (who really knows?), that’s still a gigantic claim. When asked how he could get that much weed, he explained that “My buddy runs a store. I can get medical marijuana. When I’m at home, I’m a non-stop chimney.” Well, at least he’s doing it the legal way.

3. Justin Bieber – $8,000/week ($32,000/month)

We hate that this guy is on the list, and there’s no way we’re putting him at the top, but the disowned-Canadian singer supposedly spends $8,000 a week on bud. Never shy of the spotlight, or of destroying his own dignity (like when he had two of his bodyguards carry him up the steps to the Great Wall of China like they were human thrones), the Daily Mail reports that Bieber also spent loads of money on codeine-laced cough syrup, Xanax, and Ambien.

Of course, all these pounds of ganja are there to serve his giant entourage as well as himself, but that’s still a whole lot of green to be spending on green. Beyond the $32,000 he spends per month on herb, apparently he’s blowing through a full $1 million a month on extracurriculars. The anonymous source stated that “The guys handling his investments at Mellon Bank complain that there is nothing left for them to invest.” If he doesn’t slow his roll, it’s fair to say that Bieber might have a similar career path as MC Hammer.

2. Wiz Khalifa – $10,000/month

Wiz Khalifa is a popular American rapper with a huge, loyal core of stoner fans. Cameron Jibril Thomaz, as he was born, apparently got his stage name from family and friends: Wiz because he was a “wiz” at everything he did, and Khalifa, which is Arabix for “successor.” He has been an advocate for marijuana use for as long as he’s had a public voice: After skyrocketing into the public consciousness in 2010, he made headlines when he was arrested for multiple drug charges after a performance in North Carolina.

He boasted in an interview that he spends about $10,000 a month on bud, but no one can deny the entrepreneurial spirit of Khalifa. He launched his own line of rolling papers, and also has his own hat, shoe, and clothing company. A few months ago, Khalifa became possibly one of the first people to get a marijuana sponsorship by The Cookie Company. For the price of having a strain named after him, Khalifa went from spending $120,000 a year on weed, to $0 a year on weed. That’s a pretty good business practice right there.

1. Snoop Lion – $24,000/month

The Godfather of Ganja (not one of his many official monikers, but it could be), it should come as no surprise that Snoop is at the head of the list. Since beginning his music career in 1992 and subsequently being discovered by Dr. Dre, Snoop has remained in the spotlight all these years. One of the most famous rappers in the world, marijuana has always been one of the foremost trademarks of his image.

He’s an avid entrepreneur, starring in his own reality show (Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood), coaching football, founding his own film production company (Snoopadelic Films), the businessman is simply ubiquitous in our culture today. Some of his other interesting products: A TomTom GPS Navigator with his voice giving the directions, his own brand of headphones, T-Shirts, and tons of other products and endorsements. In a recent interview, Snoop claimed to smoke 81 blunts a day (82 on a good day).

Even if he smokes that much, Snoop Dogg is living proof that you can be a functional stoner and still thrive, be creative, and stay busy.
