When we think of celebrities, the first things that usually come to mind are glamour, status, parties, and a lifestyle most of us could only dream about. There was the report in 2012 of Scott Disick blowing $15k in a nightclub to impress Kayne West. Rapper, Drake was rumored to have spent $50k in 2013 at a strip club. How about the time David Beckham gave his wife Victoria (Posh Spice) a multi-million dollar vineyard in Napa Valley for her birthday?
On the flip side, certain celebrities have developed a reputation for being frugal, cheap, or downright insulting! Some of them just enjoy the thrill of saving on groceries by clipping coupons, while others are notoriously bad tippers. Being thrifty isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We should all be financially savvy. But certain Hollywood celebrities’ frugality comes across as rude, condescending, and just plain obnoxious. Read the list below to see which stars are simply “living on less” and which ones are seriously offending wait staff, entourages, sales clerks, and even friends.
15. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga, born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, is one of the biggest pop icons of the century with smash hits like, ‘Poker Face’, ‘Paparazzi’ and ‘Bad Romance’. In 2016, she was nominated for an Oscar for the song ‘Til it Happens to You’, featured in the documentary, The Hunting Ground. Constantly pushing limits and shocking fans with her unique style (who could forget the dress made of meat?), Gaga has been a titan in the music industry since 2008’s ‘Just Dance’, which turned her into an overnight sensation. It appears that just like the rest of us, Lady Gaga appreciates a good bargain. She is quoted as saying, “Why do people look at me like I’m crazy when I use coupons at grocery (stores) or try bargaining at retail? I’m from New York, where is the sale rack?” Interestingly enough, Gaga has also been included on lists that profile stars’ outrageous spending for the time she spent a reported $60,000 on 27 koi (fish) for her pond.
14. Tobey Maguire
Tobey Maguire may have made millions from the Spider-Man franchise and movies like Brothers, Seabiscuit and The Great Gatsby, but that doesn’t stop him from being a penny pincher. Maguire grew up middle-class and was raised to appreciate the value of a dollar. He’s compared his philosophy on money to someone winning the lottery and blowing all their winnings, which he says would never be the case with him.
For anyone over forty, none of us could forget the massive confidence Madonna showed after her performance on American Bandstand in 1984. When Dick Clark asked the up-and-coming star what her dreams and goals for the future would be, the material girl matter-of-factly replied, “To rule the world.” For the next two decades, Madonna broke all the rules, pushed every limit she could, and while not really ruling the world, certainly cemented herself as one of the biggest stars in the world. Unfortunately, Madge doesn’t take very good care of the people who take care of her day to day needs. The singer is known for either leaving a very bad tip or no tip at all when dining out and has been called out in many instances for being a major cheapskate.
12. Sarah Jessica Parker
Sarah Jessica Parker has been winning the hearts of fans all the way back to early appearance is Square Pegs and Footloose. The actress has been working consistently all her life, but it was her role as New York City writer, Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City that made Parker a style icon. Even years after the end of the hit show, Parker continues to be held in the highest regard by designers and fans alike. In real life the actress remembers her humble beginnings growing up middle-class in Ohio. She has stated publicly that her three children wear hand-me-downs because she doesn’t want them to grow up with a sense of entitlement.
11. Kristin Bell
Kristen Bell may be best known for her roles in movies like Veronica Mars and Frozen, but the actress wears many hats. Besides singing and acting, Bell has been married to actor Dax Shepard since 2013, is a mother of two children, frequently appears in commercials, and is an advocate for animals (and a long-time vegetarian). The actress, voted PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity of 2013, has admitted to being a huge believer in coupon-clipping, and is known to shop for clothes at Target and Costco. It may be her “normal” upbringing in Michigan or just plain thriftiness, but Bell seems to appreciate the value of a dollar.
10. Rachael Ray
Rachael Ray is now a household name thanks to her popular show on The Food Network, a successful lifestyle magazine bearing her name, and the multiple best-selling cookbooks Ray has authored. Fans love tuning in to watch the down-to-earth celebrity interviews on the show that bears the chef’s now-famous name. Her attitude is warm and welcoming, the cooking divine, but unfortunately Ray is known for being a bad tipper, and has even gone as far as suggesting less than twenty percent tips when dining out.
9. Jeremy Piven
Jeremy Piven is a stage and film actor, but is probably best known for his role as Ari Gold in Entourage. Good friends with John Cusack, Piven has been acting since childhood and considers himself a stage actor first. Despite playing such fun, likable characters as Arnie in The Family Man and Dean in Serendipity, Piven has a reputation for being kind of rude. The actor has been known to show up to restaurants with his entire entourage, stay long periods of time, and leave signed DVD’s as a tip.
8. Paul McCartney
Paul McCartney is best known for being a former Beatle, but even today at the age of 73, McCartney is still making news in the music industry. The living legend just announced his first tour date of 2016, with tickets set to go on sale March 14. The singer was married for the third time in 2011, to Nancy Shevell and is worth a whopping $800 million, but he didn’t hang onto this net worth by being a careless spender. He has been known to have a cash bar at parties and has even made his daughter, Stella, pay for her own college education.
7. Teri Hatcher
Teri Hatcher is known for being beautiful, talented, and a devoted mother to her only daughter, Emerson, and even private to the point of alienating her fellow cast members on Desperate Housewives. But something many fans don’t realize is that Hatcher also clings tight to her wallet and is known for being extremely frugal. Hatcher was spotted taking all the furniture from her trailer after the show ended, apparently with the intention of selling it. The actress also has a personal rule of driving her cars until they have 10,000 miles on them before getting a new one. Cheap or just good sense? You decide.
6. Sean Penn
Sean Penn is arguably one of the best actors of our time. He first won our hearts as the spaced out, but loveable surfer dude, Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but went on to become an award-winning actor and political activist. No stranger to controversy, Penn has had altercations with paparazzi, feuds with other actors and television personalities, and many public break-ups. It seems Penn has developed another reputation throughout the years: Bad Tipper. There are numerous reports of Penn stiffing wait staff at various restaurants throughout the country. He typically dines with a table-full of friends, runs up a large tab, and then leaves nothing for the people who generously catered to his every need.
5. Jada Pinkett Smith
Jada Pinkett Smith is known for being part of one of the most solid, lasting Hollywood marriages along with husband Will Smith. The two have weathered the storms of infidelity rumors, questions about their parenting styles, and years of being held under a microscope, but continue to prevail as a couple. The two share two children, Jaden and Willow (Will has a son Trey, from a previous relationship) and are known for their unconventional parenting style. The two have amassed a fortune in the movie and entertainment industry, but it seems Pinkett-Smith still appreciates a bargain. She has been photographed more than once shopping at thrift stores with daughter, Willow. This may have more to do with searching for eclectic fashion pieces, but it still begs to reason that if you’re part of one of the most powerful couples in Hollywood, you could probably find another place to spend a Saturday afternoon shopping.
4. Jaclyn Smith
One of the original Charlie’s Angels, Jaclyn Smith has always been known for her beauty. Even now, at age 70, Smith is a gorgeous, sophisticated woman. Aside from acting, Smith has had her own clothing line, is a big supporter of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation, and is, herself, a breast cancer survivor. Unfortunately, the actress also makes the list for notorious cheapskates. Sandra Bernhard has called Smith out for being a shamefully bad tipper. Bernhard, who is a former manicurist, said Smith would get $50 manicures and leave a dime tip. That has to make every “Worst Celebrity Tippers” list out there!
Beyonce Knowles is one of those entertainers that is respected by peers in the music industry, critics, and fans all over world. With hits like, Halo, If I Were a Boy, and Crazy in Love, the singer’s music strikes a chord with nearly every listener. At one point, Tom Hanks was even quoted as saying Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it) was his favorite song. Married to Jay Z, Knowles is part of a major Hollywood “It” couple that have a combined net worth of $1 billion. Maybe that’s why it is so surprising that Beyonce has been photographed shopping at Wal Mart, and has been called out by friends as one of the cheapest people they know. Apparently Bey gets most of her bling for free from designers worldwide.
2. Hilary Swank
Hilary Swank is one of those actors that is just plain good in everything she stars in. From Million Dollar Baby to Boys Don’t Cry, the Oscar-winner cranks out one solid piece of acting after another. Despite her massive success and a net worth of over $40 million, Swank is cautious about her shopping purchases. The actress makes a point to never pay full price if she can avoid it. She has said she looks for bargains and has compared newspaper coupons to “dollar bills staring you in the face.” With a net worth of over $40 million, it would be tempting for most of us to go a little crazy, but the once-poor (for a time, she lived out of her car) Oscar-winning actress, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
1. Michael Jordan
Michael Jordan has been called the greatest basketball player of all time. The athlete scored over 32,000 points in his career, has a wildly successful line of shoes (Air Jordan), and boasts famous friends like Spike Lee and Oprah, this is a man to be envied. However, Jordan has been called out publicly by friend (or is it former friend?) Charles Barkley for being cheap. It is well-known that Jordan refuses to tip, even on bills in excess of $1,000. No one knows for sure where the no-tip policy comes from, since the former star athlete came from very humble beginnings himself.
