This is not about the most expensive ways rich, relatively young celebrities spend their cash, but about the crazy ideas going through a celebrity’s mind now that they have all the wealth in the world. Some just never grow up, and make all sorts of excuses to spend on things they wish they had as kids. That is something most of us can relate to. Some are actually pretty good businesspeople with huge fortunes spending their money in a way few of us could understand, which is why they probably have these fortunes and we don’t. Others have the greatest of intentions or just simply the largest of egos and they just want to show the world what they can do. Many fail while others succeed, but no one can knock someone who tries. Mixed in we also have the insane that can’t possibly have any possible explanation except that these younger stars just want to spend their money faster then it comes in. Eventually these stars do grow up. In some cases before they lose all of their money. What many of these artists, actors and athletes don’t grasp is that the gravy train doesn’t last forever. There is always someone new who is ready to knock you down from the top. Then where will the money come from? One thing’s for sure, it takes an unconventional mind to be a musician or actor. So no one should expect conventional decisions. This is why we love them and hate them at the same time and why most of us could never be like them.
15. Amanda Seyfried: She Loves Her Dead Animals
Don’t expect any warmth from the animals you see keeping Amanda Seyfried company in the picture above. That’s because they are all taxidermy animals (dead and stuffed). With all of these wonderful pets lying around, the actress does feel the need to have a real live animal to keep her company. She has a pet dog, Finn an Australian sheep dog, who reportedly also loves to play with the animals. Everyone has a hobby, this just happens to be her quirky little interest and she definitely has the money for it. Among other things she also has a collection of stuffed owls and a miniature horse. Interesting…
14. Kim Basinger: Wanted Her Own Little Queendom
Many a person has visions of ruling their own little kingdom and building their own little city. Several video games exist for such a thing for a reason. Very few of us do it in real life, but Kim Basinger went all out on her dream. In 1989 she and some partners shelled out $20 million to buy the town of Braselton, Georgia. The town is located 53 miles north of Atlanta and is also close to her home town of Athens, GA. The name of this small village of about 500 people comes from its previous owners, the Braselton family, who were both the bank and landlords of the entire town. The family decided to sell 1751 of the 2000 acres they owned to the actress.
Kim had the greatest of intentions. She was going to build a movie studio, and turn the town into the greatest of tourist attractions. Her grandiose and extravagant plans did not work out as she lost the town in 1995 after declaring bankruptcy. In true fashion that demonstrates how the rich get away with everything and the average Joe suffers, Kim was allowed to walk away with most of her fortune after the bankruptcy, convincing the courts that she could not possibly give up her extravagant lifestyle and her three homes. God knows how she could possibly live like a normal person!
She sold the town for $1 million in order to cover up her debts which were obviously much larger. The courts however, didn’t care too much about what that would do to the average citizen and the town itself, as several of the town’s citizens lost almost all of the little they had due to the failure of Kim’s plans. On the plus side, at least she had the guts to try.
13. Bono: His Hat Required A First Class Plane Ticket
You can’t be an artist or musician without having a little bit of flaky in you. It’s what inspires you to be the best in your field and few have made a bigger name for themselves than Bono, lead singer of the band U2. So it comes as no surprise that Bono treats his lucky hat better than most of us treat our spouses. In 2007 Bono had a concert appearance in Italy with the famed Luciano Pavarotti. He forgot one thing back home though, his hat, an item he could not perform without.
What does a normal person do in such a case? Overnight it via courier or pay for space in the baggage bin on the first flight out. But not Bono. He loved his hat so much that the hat required its own first class seat on the next flight to Italy. The cost of $1700 is a drop in the bucket for Bono, just not for the rest of us. I am sure Bono had his reasons. Some would suspect that for such an important show he did not want to take any risks having his favorite hat ruined.
12. Celine Dion: Backyard Water Park
Ever have kids and wanted to spoil them or buy something for them that is also fun for you as well (even if you don’t want to admit it)? The inner child in Celine Dion did just that. After buying her $12.5 million Oceanside house in Jupiter, Florida in 2005, Celine decided to customize it to her taste. She tore the original house down and rebuilt it including the water park seen above, complete with slides and loops and two Olympic size pools. Who wouldn’t want to be her son Rene-Charles, who was 9 years old at the time this was built?
Don’t let real estate agents fool you when they tell you not to build a pool or customize your house in your own manner. Real estate agents just want to make the quickest buck possible and want to appeal to a broader market. There is always going to be someone who likes what you have done and in Celine’s case, she sold her house in 2014 for 5 times the purchase amount, even after going through the housing bubble in 2008. She just had to wait a little longer to get it.
11. Rupert Grint: Mr. Whippy
Rupert Grint grew up in front of the whole world as one of the three main protagonists in the Harry Potter series. Now a 27 year old adult, he used part of his vast fortune to live out a childhood dream. He bought an Ice Cream Truck and called it Mr. Whippy. Like all food, selling ice cream is something you need a license for which Rupert decided he had no time for. So he doesn’t sell the ice cream his truck makes, he just gives it away.
When most affluent people go cruising, they are usually seen driving around in the type of car that makes you salivate. Not Rupert. His idea of cruising around is touring the local villages in his ice cream truck handing out free ice cream to any kid he sees. He does this 10 months of the year avoiding July and August. Of course, Rupert vehemently denies who he is when asked by the little children receiving their free treat.
The Mr. Whippy van is also available for other locations and was sometimes used as the dessert van in the Harry Potter cast barbecues. The inner child in Rupert has also inspired him to purchase many types of animals.
10. Lady Gaga: Ghostbusters
The Ghostbusters ain’t afraid of no ghosts but apparently Lady Gaga might be. In 2010 Lada Gaga was haunted by a ghost named Ryan. So the singer spent $50,000 on an electro-magnetic field reader meant to detect ghosts and protect her while she was on tour. Of course this is Lady Gaga, a woman who wears meat dresses. She is one of a few celebrities you can use for a whole article of how to just throw away your money. If it wasn’t for her odd personality, would anyone buy her music, or would she be inspired to do the things she does? So, I guess these are investments in herself in a different sort of way. She still has loads of money left over so she must know something we don’t.
9. Kate Moss: Gold “Toy”
The superstar model from the 90s must have believed that pleasure does not come from size or any other such nonsense, but only from the feel of pure solid gold. She purchased her toy of choice in 2006 for roughly $400 (depending on the source). That same year she was embroiled in all sorts of scandals through her cocaine use and her relationship with musician Pete Doherty. This is probably why tabloids even cared that she bought this in an adult boutique in New York City. Tabloids never reported on the details of the vibrator, such as its proportions and other such facts, because there had to be something other then just solid gold that made this a worthwhile purchase. Of course, Moss stated that she bought it for a friend. If that’s the case many a person would have loved to have been there when the gift was being unwrapped.
8. Akon: Diamond Mine
When the news came out in 2007 about hip-hop Sensation Akon‘s investment in a diamond mine in South Africa, the media went haywire about yet another star blowing his money. Some were furious that he would invest in blood diamonds without realizing that South Africa happens to be where most of our legitimate diamonds come from. This one actually makes sense, though. Urban artists love to sport the rocks and the chains. This man brilliantly decided that he won’t spend his money on just one rock, but decided instead to buy a factory that makes enough dough while giving him his potentially discounted jewels, that in his field, he just has to wear in order to fit in. It was brilliant.
How did the plan work out? Pretty damn well. He still has his mine and has invested in many other projects in Africa, the continent where he grew up. That’s showing all of the naysayers and giving back in a different way to the land you grew up in.
7. Victoria And David Beckham: The Diamond “Toy”
Kate Moss bought an adult toy in gold, and Akon bought a diamond mine, but it took Victoria and David Beckham to combine the two ideas in what has to be the most expensive adult toy ever, at 1.8 million dollars. The Diamond Vibrator was purchased in 2004 from a strip club owner while Victoria was pregnant, and it was crafted from Platinum with a Diamond base. Luckily the diamonds were in the base otherwise that would hurt a little when used. Supposedly only 10 of these exist in the world. Mick Jagger is reportedly the owner of another one of these things. One would think that this kind of activity could be accomplished for free.
6. Shaquille O’Neal – I Am Superman
It must be great to be so confident in yourself that you just don’t give a damn about anything, or especially what anyone thinks. Shaquille O’Neal was one of the all time greatest basketball players ever, so if the man wants to put the Superman Shield on practically everything he owns, he can do it. His kids must love it and most men would love to have a wife willing to be so understanding. Of course that wife left him so maybe she wasn’t as understanding. When we say that the emblem was on everything, we mean everything, from kitchen cabinets, to his car seats, to his own basketball court. Not sure if his new spouse allows him to do this anymore. Probably not.
5. Daniel Radcliffe – The Mattress Of Kings
The superstar actor from Harry Potter he was one of the richest actors, let alone child actors, by the time we has 17. So he could buy whatever he wanted in life. Surprisingly though, the young man actually kept his money and didn’t splurge all that much, but boy, did he need his sleep. About a decade ago, it is reported that he spent $17,000 on a mattress. Yes, you read that right. That’s about $10 to the rest of us. That amount of money buys you a hand sewn masterpiece made out of horse hair and fleece wool. One has to wonder what the bed sheets and covers were made of?
4. Eddy Curry: Cable TV
The retired basketball player celebrated like no one else would when he signed with the Chicago Bulls over a decade ago. He managed to rack up the biggest cable television bill imaginable at over $1,000 a month. We recently went on various cable websites in the United States and selected all of the possible options to see how that could happen. It can’t. The maximum one could spend is roughly $600 per month and they would have to be extremely multi-lingual to understand all of the foreign channels they would have to select. As a basketball player, do you even find the time to watch TV? Hopefully Eddy still has some money despite two wives, seven children and a house foreclosure. The man has had bigger problems then money with the murder of his 10 month old daughter in 2009, at the hands of his ex-girlfriend’s attorney. At least he still has his health having suffered from cardiac problems during his career.
3. Arian Foster – Segways
When these things came out, marketers thought that everyone was going to ride around in these little buggers. Things did not quite turn out that way. One man, running back Arian Foster, probably thought the same thing. Turns out he decided that it would be a good idea for his offensive line to have one so he spent $70k and bought a Segway for each one of those teammates. Problem is, an offensive lineman is there for his size and a Segway just can’t hold a 300 pound beast of a man. At least he had the greatest of intentions, he just forgot to read the fine print. Wonder if he was able to return them?
2. Mario Balotelli: Parking Tickets
The Soccer (Football) star from Italy didn’t think too much about parking regulations. He had no time to worry about such things so he just started parking his car anywhere. The tickets came and went until one day, like everyone else, the courts decided that he had to pay up. His bills totalled $15,000. Do the math and that is about 200 parking tickets. This occurred in 2011 while he was playing for Manchester City.
Just read the quotes from club sources about this: “Mario will drive from his luxury apartment to a restaurant a few streets away and leave the car on double yellows … The other week the Maserati misfired so he just abandoned it. Staff have had to bail it out 27 times … The valet the club uses empties the glove box of tickets every time he cleans it. Mario doesn’t seem to care. It’s a drop in the ocean to him.” The man made £100,000 a week so it really was a drop in the bucket to him even though it was a pain for his staff.
1. Kim Kardashian – BlackBerry Bold
The Queen of reality TV could probably occupy her own top 15 list of interesting ways to spend your wealth. So this one might seem tame in comparison to everything else, but it is just too damn funny. She loves the Blackberry keypad so much so that she is easily the number one BlackBerry fan on the planet, slightly ahead of Barack Obama. Between 2014 and now she has consistently gone on eBay to buy as many Blackberry Bolds as she could find, fearing that supply of the extinct model would soon run out. According to her: “It’s my heart and soul, I love it and I’ll never get rid of it, I do have an iPhone, and I use it for photos. But if you write an email and you need to type fast — I like having the board. They don’t even have them in stores anymore. I buy them on eBay. It’s a BlackBerry Bold. And I like to have three in my room that I line up in case they break.” How many people actually break 3 cell phones at one time?
