Pop culture’s obsession with celebrity relationships has existed for about as long as the concept of ‘celebrity’ itself. Gossip magazines and entertainment channels attract huge attention through relaying stories about the world’s most famous couples. Indeed, there are many celebrity couples out there who are idolised to the point where their existence seems almost hyper-real: Take Jay-Z and Beyoncé, AKA entertainment’s power couple. With more than $1 billion dollars between them, the pair rule the roost of the music industry. Their every move is stalked by papparazzi, and countless fans obsess over their relationship which appears to be outlasting most other celebrity marriages.
The media circus that has surrounded Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston has been one of the most well-known, controversial media stories of the 21st century. Did Brad cheat or didn’t he? Are you on ‘Team Jen’ or ‘Team Angie’? More recently, the ruckus that followed Kristen Stewart‘s betrayal of Robert Pattinson left fans divided, with many turning against Kristen Stewart. It seems that any information we can glean on a celebrity’s personal relationships has a significant impact on how we view the celebrity in question. A relationship can even damage or benefit a celebrity’s career.
However, a few select celebrities have decidedly broken the mould and dated ‘normal’ people. Although this isn’t a common decision for those in the music and movie industries – these stars often claim that only other famous people understand the challenges of the celebrity lifestyle – there are more stars who date non-celebrities that you may be aware of. These sorts of relationships are typically more low key than star couplings, but their stories are heartwarming, Cinderella-esque tales of down to earth celebrities who fell for ‘ordinary’ people just like you and me.
