10 Celebrities Who Were Born Rich

As you might have learned from one of our recent articles, not all celebrities are born into money. Some have even had to work in retail, fast food and or odd jobs just to make a buck, before making it in movies, television or music. Still, there are some that get to have all the advantages of wealth. Why? Because their parents were wealthy well before the celebrity was born.

Sure, some kids who are born into rich families suffer when everything is handed to them. They become complacent and don’t know the meaning of hard work. Today, we’re talking about celebrities that went on to create their own successes. They work hard in music and acting and most have amassed their own fortune separate from their parents.

Read on for our list of 10 celebrities who were born rich.

10. Darren Criss is worth $1.3 Million

Darren Criss

Before he was warming the hearts of Glee fans as Blaine, Darren Criss was born into a wealthy and influential musical family. His mom, Cerina, is an accountant, and his father, Charles, is an investment banker. Not only that, but Darren’s dad was even the former director of several classical music organizations, including the Philharmonic Baroque Orchestra and the San Francisco Opera. Because his parents were famous and well-connected, Darren was able to attend the American Conservatory Theater starting at age 10. It looks like all that music at a young age influenced Darren’s career. He’s a founder and co-owner of the musical theater company StarKid Productions. Darren told OK Magazine, “It’s always important to recognize your situation and not take it for granted.”

9. Samantha Ronson is worth $2 Million

Samantha Ronson

Calling Samantha Ronson a celebrity is a bit of an overstatement. It wasn’t until her highly publicized relationship with the ever-controversial Lindsay Lohan that the general public started to notice this English DJ and singer-songwriter. Before she was ever featured on the cover of tabloids gracing the checkout aisles of the local grocery store, Samantha had grown up in a very wealthy family. Her mom is a writer and socialite while her father is a real estate entrepreneur and former music executive. Her uncle, Gerald Ronson, is a property tycoon. As a result, Samantha attended the private Chaplin School.

8. Jordin Sparks is Worth $8 Million

Jordin Sparks

While we often hear of professional athletes and the millions they make at the sports they play, we often don’t hear of their children. In Phillippi Sparks’ case, the former New York Giants cornerback now has a famous singing daughter: Jordin Sparks. Before Jordin won the sixth season of American Idol, she grew up with her famous football player father and her entrepreneur mother in the suburbs of Ridgewood, New Jersey. That childhood affected Jordin’s interested. She told ESPN, “I love football. My weekends are booked. Football is first, then basketball and then everything else.” Still, music seems to be at the forefront for this People’s Choice Award-winner.

7. Lana Del Rey is Worth $12 Million

Elizabeth Woolridge Grant

When you grow up in a family of money, that money can often help you when you’ve made bad life decisions. That’s the case with Lana Del Rey, born Elizabeth Woolridge Grant. Her father, Rob, is a successful entrepreneur and her mother, Pat, is a former account executive. When Lana found herself addicted to alcohol at a young age, she could have gone down a very different path. Instead, her family used their influence to send her to boarding school. In an interview with British GQ, Lana said, “It’s been nine years since my last drink. That’s really why I got sent to boarding school aged 14 – to get sober.” That family money also meant that she was able to attend Fordham University where she would inevitably fall in love with music.

6. Ed Sheeran is Worth $15 Million

Ed Sheeran

These days, Ed Sheeran is known as an award-winning singer-songwriter, boasting a Brit Award and MTV Video Music Award, among others. Everyone has to start somewhere, and Ed happened to be born into a wealthy family. His parents are prominent in the art world, running Sheeran Lock, an independent art consultancy, for 20 years. His dad is an art curator and his mom is a jewelry designer. Because art was important to the family, Ed was encouraged in his own artistic endeavor: music. He attended the National Youth Theatre when he was a teen. Fortunately, he doesn’t have the snobbiness that some kids do when they’re born rich. He told Billboard, “the main thing that you have to remember on this journey is, just be nice to everyone and always smile.”

5. Michelle Williams is Worth $16 Million

Michelle Williams

Sometimes, children from wealthy parents learn the best attributes and use them when they get older. That’s the case with Golden Globe-winning actress Michelle Williams. She was born in Kalispell, Montana. Her mom is a homemaker and her dad is a stock and commodities trader. Rather than just reap the benefits of a wealthy family, Michelle learned from her father. She won the Robbins World Cup Championship of Futures Trading when she was just 17, according to Business Insider. In order to win that prize, she was able to turn $10,000 into $100,000 through futures trading. That, and her successful acting career, explains her $16 million net worth.

4. Gwyneth Paltrow is Worth $60 Million

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow not only grew up rich, but she was also born into a famous Hollywood family. Her mother is the Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress Blythe Danner. Her late father, Bruce Paltrow, was a movie producer and director. Not only did Gwyneth get the benefits of their wealth (she attended the private girls’ school, Spence School), but she also no doubt got into acting easier than others because of her parents’ connections. Even so, she doesn’t like to talk about her wealth or status. She told The Guardian, “I love the English way, which is not as capitalistic as it is in America. People don’t talk about work and money. They talk about interesting things at dinner parties.”

3. Kristen Stewart is Worth 70 Million

Kristen Stewart

Although most people became aware of Kristen Stewart when she played Bella in the Twilight movie franchise, she actually started in the entertainment business as a child. That’s probably because she came from an entertainment family. Her mom is a script supervisor and movie director and her father is a stage manager and television producer. Her childhood was a bit of a fairy tale–she grew up in an Alice in Wonderland-themed house. Covered in decor mimicking the classic novel, like a White Rabbit painted onto an exterior wall, the house was recently placed on the market for $1.75 million, according to The Daily Mail.

While most kids who are born rich get to reap all the benefits that entails, including being spoiled and getting what they want, that’s not always the case. In the case of Jennifer Aniston, she still had to work hard at small jobs despite her parents being established and successful actors. She didn’t get into the entertainment business because of family connections. Instead, she worked as a waitress in order to earn money while she pursued acting on her own, according to People magazine. As a result, she was able to earn her seminal role as Rachel in Friends all from her own hard work.

Taylor Swift grew up in a household that had a healthy knowledge of money and how it worked. Her father is a financial adviser born from a line of bank presidents and her mother is a former mutual fund marketing executive. You would think, then, that this accomplished seven-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter wouldn’t have had to work hard to get to where she is now. That’s not the case, though. She wrote in her songbook, Taylor Swift, “My parents raised me to never feel like I was entitled to success. That you have to work for it. You have to work so hard for it. And sometimes then you don’t even get where you need to go.” It seems that the work ethic she learned from her parents has really paid off.
