It’s not the wisest idea to mix business with pleasure. And never is that saying more true than in the intrigue-laden and decadent world of Hollywood. It’s hard enough being perennially in the limelight, but when your partner is a celebrity as well, this makes a relationship all the more challenging to maintain. And when a celebrity couple decides to collaborate together, this can cause more harm than good to a marriage. Because being around each other every waking minute of the day can get stifling.
Here are some of Hollywood’s former couples who worked together at one time or another while they were still married. This is not to say that collaborating together was the cause of their respective break-ups. It just sheds light on the notion that yes, working together (among other factors) may put a strain on a good, strong relationship.
Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon
At the time Cruel Intentions was released in theatres, its stars Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon were already expecting their first child. In fact, they were already engaged when they both started filming the movie. So it was quite a treat for fans to see the pair in reel and real life, with the couple always showing affection for one another. But as with most Hollywood marriages, theirs went up in smoke. Eight years and two children later, the pair divorced.
Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs
Idina Menzel first met Taye Diggs when they starred together in the original Broadway production of Rent in 1996. After seven years of dating, they tied the knot in 2003, the same year Menzel had her breakthrough theater role in the smash hit musical, Wicked. In 2005, they starred together in the movie version of Rent, where they reprised their stage roles as Benny and Maureen. After ten years of marriage and one son, the couple went their separate ways in 2013.
Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid
We all fell in love with Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid when they played lovers in the 1987 science fiction comedy film, Innerspace. And fans were even more thrilled when the two became an item in real life and tied the knot in 1991. They starred together in just one film, neo noir film drama, Flesh and Bone while they were married. The marriage ended in 2001 after Ryan’s much-publicized affair with Russell Crowe.
Sean Penn and Robin Wright
After a tempestuous marriage and divorce from Madonna, Sean Penn became involved with Robin Wright. They had two children, then married in 1996. The pair starred together in just one movie entitled She’s So Lovely and it didn’t make much of an impact in the box office. The couple’s relationship turned sour in the 2000s and after an on-again-off-again scenario, they called it quits for good in 2010.
Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson
Perhaps one of the worst ways for a couple to ruin a relationship is to star in a reality TV show together. Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson made such an adorable, wholesome couple when they first started dating. With their shared passion for music, the pair looked to be in it for the long haul. After they married, they starred in reality TV show, Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, which was meant to document their first few years of marriage. But they divorced after only four years of marriage and Simpson once said in an interview that their show took its toll on their relationship.
Courteney Cox and David Arquette
Friends star Courteney Cox met her former husband, David Arquette in 1995 in the movie set of the slasher film, Scream. He also guest starred in Friends as Phoebe’s twin sister’s stalker on the same year. But it wasn’t until 1999 that the couple decided to tie the knot. Cox and Arquette appeared together in two films after their marriage: Scream 3 and the box office bomb, 3000 Miles To Graceland. The couple divorced in 2012, after nearly two years of separation.
Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson
Even though they’re already married to other people, many still associate Emma Thompson with Kenneth Branagh. Once touted as the golden couple of the British entertainment world, the two met in 1987 when they appeared together in a TV series and married in 1989. As a couple, they starred in numerous flicks together, such as Much Ado About Nothing, Dead Again, and Peter’s Friends, among others. The marriage ended in 1995 and they have both moved on since then.
Woody Allen and Mia Farrow
This couple wasn’t actually married, but they were common-law partners for a good 13 years with three children together. Before controversial uncouple Woody Allen and Mia Farrow were embroiled in legal battles and mud-slinging, they starred in numerous movies together whilst in a committed partnership from 1979 to 1992. In fact, of the 13 films Allen made during that period, Farrow appeared in 12 of them. Even though their break-up was a bitter one, we’ll never forget their performances together in movies like Hannah and Her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors, and Husbands and Wives.
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman
Before Brad and Jen, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were Hollywood’s golden couple. They met and fell in love on the set of Days of Thunder and married a year later. In their eleven-year marriage, they worked together two more times, in romantic starring roles: as lovers from two different social classes in Far and Away and as a married couple with a slightly troubled marriage in Stanley Kubrick’s final film, Eyes Wide Shut. For reasons still unknown to the public, Cruise and Kidman’s marriage deteriorated and they divorced two years after they filmed Eyes Wide Shut.
