Although it may sound old-fashioned to some, there are more and more couples out there who not only want to save themselves for marriage…but they actually do. The majority choose to wait because of religious beliefs, and many because they feel that their bodies, love and the institution of marriage are sacred things.
For some it is also a matter of wanting to share and experience their union and all of its events–from taking their vows to the birth of their children in the same way as they were raised. They would not have it any other way. Some are schooled in the ways of love, as for them perhaps this is a second union. Though choosing celibacy until marriage is more difficult for those in the know, many do take this path, hoping to avoid the pitfalls they may have already experienced the first time around. Celebrities are no different than the rest of us and here are some who have shared their opinions and personal experiences on saving themselves for marriage.
This Brazilian beauty managed to resist baseball player Derek Jeter and rock star Lenny Kravitz and remain a virgin until she finally sealed the deal with basketball hubby Marko Jaric. While dating Jaric in 2006 the Victoria’s Secret supermodel emphatically declared, “Sex is for after marriage.” Three years later Lima (a devout Catholic) and Marko eloped on Valentine’s Day. Today the couple have two daughters.
Before actress Mowry and Adam Housely tied the knot in 2011, the couple opted to stay celibate until marriage, a belief brought on by faith. Mowry did in fact wait until she was 29 to lose her virginity, explaining “We felt God wanted us to do it. Whenever you’re feeling discouraged, just pray together.” said Mowry. Apparently, faith and prayer worked for this couple who successfully waited until the night of their wedding.
Ali Landry is an American former Miss USA, model and actress. After her failed marriage to Mario Lopez in 2004 (whom she caught cheating after 2 weeks), Landry chose to take her time with second husband, Mexican film director Alejandro Monteverde, whom she married in 2006. Landry has confirmed that because of horrible turnout of her first marriage she wanted to be extra careful approaching relationships, confirming she and current husband waited to be intimate until they tied the knot. Today Landry and Monteverde are still married and have three children, two boys and a daughter.
Tim Tebow and Camilla Belle
Football quarterback Tim Tebow’s girlfriend Camilla Belle might just be his perfect match since the Brazilian actress, like Tebow, is saving herself for marriage.
A devout Christian, Tebow admitted that he is a virgin, and is saving himself until the big day, or night.. “Its about finding a girl who likes me for me, and not because of what I do.” he said.
The actress/ singer spoke about her virgin status in 2006. Duff said: “It’s harder having a boyfriend who’s older because people just assume. But [virginity] is definitely something I like about myself. It doesn’t mean I haven’t thought about sex, because everyone I know has had it and you want to fit in. But when they talk about it, it doesn’t sound special, like you would imagine it to be. It just seems like everybody has slept with each other – you know what I mean?” Duff was married and is now divorced from husband, hockey player Mike Comrie. They have a son, Luca.
Jordin Sparks is an American singer-songwriter and actress. Her boyfriend is singer Jason Derulo. Sparks, who once spoke loud and proud about wearing a purity ring, which expresses the intent to wait for marriage before sex now says: “I don’t wear it (purity ring) exactly everyday anymore but I always have something there. When I was 13 my mom spoke to me about purity and waiting for marriage and different things like that. And, you know, at the time I was like, ‘Sure that’s great,’ but I can’t say what’s gonna happen a couple of months from now. People grow.”
24 year old “Dancing With the Stars” regular Chelsie Hightower says it this way: “I am a virgin, I don’t drink, and I don’t do drugs. There are always temptations, and they come in different ways, but this is really who I am. Nothing or anyone affects how I live my life. It’s not that hard… I definitely know who I am. .. I don’t care what anyone says.”
Much to the disappointment of their female fans, and alongside brothers Nick and Joe, Kevin Jonas sported a purity ring, as a symbol of his decision to remain a virgin until marriage. Following a two-year courtship, eldest Jonas brother, Kevin married hairdresser Danielle Deleasa in December 2009, beating his younger brothers to the altar, and to the bedroom. Kevin and Danielle welcomed their first child in February of this year, daughter Alena Rose.
Julianne Hough is a professional ballroom dancer, country music singer, and actress. She is a two-time professional champion of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars”. Although the singer scored high on the tv show, one place she doesn’t score is in the bedroom. “I want to be with that special person,” Hough says “I think [the choice] to have sex before marriage is an individual one, but if you’re just with one person, it’s only for one good reason, and [waiting to have sex] will strengthen that relationship.” Hough had a three-year relationship with radio and television personality Ryan Seacrest which ended about a year ago.
Sarah Drew is an American actress. She is known for her role as Dr. April Kepner on the popular medical television series, “Grey’s Anatomy”. Dr. Kepner (her character on the show) was a virgin and like Drew was saving herself for marriage, as a Christian woman, (also like Drew). Though the actress was successful waiting, her character on the series was not. Drew married husband Peter Lanfer (a professor at UCLA) in 2002. They have one child, Micah Emmanuel born in 2012.
This tv star of “Friends” swore off sex until she tied the knot. Lisa Kudrow got married to husband Michael Stern in 1995 when she was 32. She says: “I don’t know if you’d characterize me as uptight, but I understood what it is to be so afraid of sex, of your sexuality… for me it was just, No, I’m saving myself. Because I have to make myself worthy of the kind of man I have in mind.”
Jessica Simpson is an American recording artist, actress, television personality and fashion designer. At the age of 12, Simpson’s father, a minister, gave her a purity ring and the young aspiring singer promised to stay a virgin until the right guy came along. The outspoken star never shied away from discussing her decision to wait until her wedding in 2002 to Nick Lachey to consummate their love. Simpson said: “My virginity is something I stand strong in.” Added (now ex-husband) Lachey: “It’s not always easy. But I do respect it. Virginity can be cool and sexy.” In November 2010, Simpson became engaged to Eric Johnson, a retired NFL tight end, whom she had been dating since May. The couple has two children a daughter and son. Jessica says they have plans to marry sometime this year.
The country singer and “American Idol” winner said back in 2007 that she was saving herself for her wedding night. Now a married woman, Carrie tied the knot with hockey player, Mike Fisher on July 10, 2010 and they are still married today.
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon were not first-timers when they married, but the couple did manage to save their first time with each other for their wedding night. During their 2008 courtship, Carey and Cannon abstained from sex until their wedding night. “We both have similar beliefs, and I just thought that it would be so much more special if we waited until after we were married. And it was. It’s not that we had no intimacy, we just didn’t have complete intimacy,” said Carey.
