While regular people who don’t have to worry about paparazzi hanging around their doorsteps tend to be friends with people they work with or have the same interests, celebrity circles often overlap. Actors don’t just hang out with actors, age and experience don’t seem to matter, and celebrity friendships often appear to be based on the old adage of opposites attract. Also bear in mind that the media may sometimes mistaken a simple photo opp for a serious friendship.
Lindsay Lohan & Woody Allen
Both Lohan and Allen have been maligned in the press over the years for a variety of alleged transgressions, and both have estranged family members that frequently add to their burden of bad publicity. Sharing family woes and handling the complexities of celebrity with a sense of humor are topics these two friends can bond over. Maybe that is what brings them together, as the pair have been spotted out in NYC having dinner together on several occasions. With Lohan rumored to soon be relocating to the UK, she might have to cultivate a new buddy across the pond to dish with who’s closer to home. Or maybe the best way for Lohan to kick off a fresh start is to soak up some British past times and learn the pleasures of spending her free time simply sipping a cup of Earl Grey tea while reflecting on her past and planning her future.
Nicki Minaj & Anna Wintour
Even stranger than Minaj sitting court-side at an Oscar de la Renta fashion show is seeing her chatting it up with fellow attendee Wintour, longstanding editor-in-chief at Vogue magazine. Their bonding was apparently more than an exchange of pleasantries as Nicki mentioned Wintour in one of her subsequent raps. If Wintour wants even more tongue-wagging than the Kimye cover photo elicited, she should feature Minaj on the cover wearing an ensemble that captures her unique fashion sense.
Jake Gyllenhaal & Adam Levine
Although Gyllenhaal‘s role as a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain was arguably one of the most career changing of his life, every time the guy glances at a human male, eyebrows are raised. When nosy people started questioning his frequent lunches and dinners with Maroon 5’s lead singer Adam Levine, both men scoffed at the bromance rumors. In an interview with Out magazine, Levine stated, “I’ve known this dude forever. He’s one of my oldest friends.” Levine has set his wedding date for July 19 of this year so the strength of his ties with Gyllenhaal will be revealed in the guest list.
David Beckham & Snoop Dogg
One of the most shocking friendships on record, many would think sports superstar Beckham would be sipping green smoothies with fresh-faced athletes at an upscale gym in his spare time. Instead, he hangs with Snoop Dogg to play a little soccer and reported hears a lot of Snoop’s new tunes before they’re recorded. As for what goes down when the duo kicks back and relaxes, imagining the scenario is much more fun than actually knowing the truth, which could very well be disappointingly mundane and boring.
50. Cent & Bette Midler
Both these stars are known for befriending people outside of their assumed circle of acquaintances, which is part of their special appeal. The two reportedly met while volunteering on the New York Restoration Project and Midler was immediately mesmerized by the singer, whose music she had long been a fan of. She admitted hoping to duet with him on some of her favorite tunes from the 40s but realized, “…he’s so young that I don’t think he knows any of them.” Come on, Bette, you can teach him. What a melodious match-up that would be.
Taylor Swift & Lena Dunham
Though relatively close in age – Swift is 24 and Dunham is 28 – at first glance these two stars couldn’t be more different. Swift consistently trying to maintain her good girl image, despite going through boyfriends at the speed of light and whining in detail about the outcomes in song after song. On the other hand, Dunham, writer/creator/producer of the irreverent HBO series Girls pushes the boundaries of nudity and unbridled promiscuity, espousing philosophies and mores in direct conflict with those of Swift. If only more people would open their minds and respect the beauty of diversity, the world would be more interesting, if not a little better.
Jennifer Lopez & Leah Remini
Although each of these talented women has wildly different talents, they have a lot in common as well. Both have the girl-next-door alter images that believe their talents. Lopez comes off as down-to-earth and fairly normal when she’s not singing or dancing, and Remini is remarkably conventional when she’s not acting and has become even more unpretentious since she severed ties with Scientology. Just two ladies livin’ the life and sharing stories about life and living it.
Gwyneth Paltrow, Beyonce & Jay-Z
Paltrow is a multifaceted woman who always seems busy with a new project but the Goop goddess always makes time to spend with best buds Beyonce and Jay-Z. She often shares her love of rap by performing some of her compositions on talk shows such as Ellen. Paltrow is so close with the celebrated couple that her kids call Jay-Z “Uncle Jay.”
Eminem & Elton John
Not only are these two musicians from different generations, they also lean on each other to meet personal challenges. Shortly after melding their talents to perform at the 2001 Grammys, Eminem sought Sir Elton’s advice on the most effective ways to address his substance abuse problem. Friends helping friends in need are friends indeed.
Robert Pattinson & Vince Vaughn
These two actors were spotted partying at a LA restaurant along with Joaquin Phoenix. No one batted an eye at Vaughn and Phoenix hanging out as they have reps as hearty party guys but Pattinson is known for being comparatively reserved and low-key. Since this event was during a period in 2013 when Pattinson’s relationship with Kristen Stewart was on the rocks, he may have been seeking to elevate his bad-boy image or just seeking the company of guys who’d been-there-and-done-that and could offer consolation and guidance.
Russell Brand & Helen Mirren
Russell Brand is one of the most inimitable characters to come out of Britain since Eddie Izzard and Eric Idle. His brash bad-boy persona is the ideal foil for the intelligent, well-read, kind and intensely philosophical man underneath the armour. Along the same lines, although British national treasure Dame Helen Mirren is best known for her portrayal of British queens in films, she’s rumored to be quite the party girl when she’s out of character. During the filming of the remake of Arthur, Brand reportedly was so enamoured with costar Mirren that he gave her a diamond encrusted safety-pin necklace. Mirren cooed upon receiving the gift, “He is the archetypal bad boy, who is really just the best, goodest boy you could possibly meet.”
