Celebrity is a great thing; you make a lot of money, people know you wherever you go, you get preferential treatment, everyone wants to pamper you and it all’s such a huge boost for your ego and self-esteem. However there are negative aspects to it as well. With celebrity, personal relationships and marriages tend to be the first things that go south. Below are some of the biggest celeb splits we’ve seen go down so far in 2014.
Nick Loeb and Sofia Vergara
This couple has been dating since 2010 and they were even engaged – but had never really set a time for a marriage. We all know Vergara as the voluptuous Latin hottie on the hit show Modern Family. The 41 year old star is also one of the highest paid actors on television – she reportedly earns $175,000 per episode and last year she pulled in $30 million with all her other endorsements. Apparently the break-up was due to Vergara’s unique connection with a former bad boy flame Chris Paciello, who at one time had ties to the Italian mob. Paciello was incarcerated for 7 years, but was released and is now a nightclub owner in Miami. Other reports state that Loeb was constantly trying to use Vergara’s connections to further his career and gain new business opportunities for his family company, Onion Crunch. Either way, the relationship is now over, and the two good-looking partners are going their separate ways.
Prince Harry and Cressida Bonas
It must be really hard to be a Prince – especially in the United Kingdom – where royalty comes with so much pomp and pageantry. Not to mention all the constant media scrutiny that is quite unavoidable in the current social media zeitgeist. Prince Harry and his on-again, off-again flame Cressida had been an item for two years, but things finally fizzled out for good this year. The reason for the break-up: apparently Cressida just felt she wasn’t up to all the strenuous and stressful requirements of being a real-life Princess. And perhaps, Prince Harry’s notoriety for being a party boy may have played into proceedings as well. The search continues for the girl who can tame Prince Harry’s wild heart …
Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith
This is one of those split-ups that you hear about and are completely in shock. It just gets to a point when you are so used to seeing two people together, but the truth is, you never really know what’s going on in someone’s relationship. After 18 years of marriage, the loveable Hollywood couple, Griffith and Banderas decided to end their union. According to CNN, the former couple issued the following statement, “We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalize our almost 20-year marriage in a friendly manner – honoring and respecting each other, our family and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together.” Wow. The two have one child together; their lovely daughter, Stella.
Robin Thicke and Paula Patton
This is another one that really makes you sad, because this is a couple that looks so good together. However it is tough to maintain a relationship in Hollywood and always being in tabloids and the public eye can be very taxing. Especially with the huge hit Robin Thicke had last year, “Blurred Lines,” he was enjoying more fame than ever before. And of course, there was the overtly sexy performance at the MTV VMA’s last year with Miley Cyrus that couldn’t have been good for any marriage. So even though, they had been married for 9 years, Paula decided to call it quits on their marriage this year. They are not officially divorced yet and Thicke has made it no secret that he is trying to win his wife back. The two stars have one son together named Julian.
John Mayer and Katy Perry
This was always a tricky one from the beginning, especially because John Mayer is such a serial dater. Over the last ten years, he has been in relationships/flings with well-known Hollywood names including Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jennifer Anniston, Jessica Simpson, Cameron Diaz etc. Katy Perry was just coming off her divorce from British funny man, Russell Brand, and it looked like the two of them had found something special together. But alas, that was not meant to be. The couple had been an item since 2012, and rumors are that infidelity on Mayer’s side might have been what brought about the demise of the relationship.
Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow
When you hear stories about this type of split, it seriously makes you wonder if any marriage can actually survive “till death do us part.” Chris and Gwyneth, by all observations looked like the excellent couple. They were best friends of Jay-Z and Beyonce, lived a grounded life in England and had two beautiful kids. But somehow, even all that wasn’t enough, and this year, the two decided to end their 10-year marriage. There might be a silver lining to all this though. Chris Martin’s band Coldplay just released their newest album Ghost Stories and it’s undeniably one of their best albums in a long time. Maybe the turmoil going on in his personal life helped him reach deep inside to compose beautiful, heartfelt music.
Jennifer Lopez and Casper Smart
Let’s be absolutely honest – we all thought this relationship between J.Lo and her former dancer Casper Smart was going to run its course. But most people thought they had at least one more year together. But nope, Jennifer Lopez recently pulled the plug and is moving on without looking back like the boss lady she is. It’s actually a little sad, because it seemed that Casper was getting pretty close to Jennifer’s twin kids, Emme and Max. The word is Casper isn’t going to receive any financial support from her after the break-up – but he does get to keep all the lavish gifts she bought him. These are the highs and lows of being a Hollywood boy-toy.
Kelly Osbourne and Matthew Mosshart
This is another one that was extremely surprising to hear. Kelly Osbourne has gone through a lot in her life: her constant battles with her weight, growing up under the same roof as her famous dad Ozzy, and even her recent social media issues with Lady Gaga’s fierce legion of monsters. It seemed that with the quiet and even-keeled Mosshart (whose sister is ½ of The Kills), she had found a calming and supportive partner to go through life with. So it really shocked everyone when at the beginning of this year, the two called off their engagement. When it’s not meant to be, it’s just not meant to be.
