Now that 2016 is in full effect, many of us are thinking about what we really want to accomplish this year. There are so many things that can be put on this list, however I thought it would be fun to make this list relatable to everyone. We all have a common denominator when it comes to what we want, we all want to find happiness. These are sixteen little things that can help you find happiness in 2016. Some are simple while others may take a bit of soul searching to accomplish.
Our society has become so fast paced and so competitive that it is hard to catch our breath at times. We live in a world where feelings are made public on social media, yet people are more judgmental than ever. Although we as humans have come a long way in our journey, we are still learning, every step of the way.
The following is a list of 16 things that everyone should try to do in 2016. It is filled with honest and good advice that can have the power to lead you to happiness.
16. Put Yourself First Sometimes
There comes a time in everyone’s life when they realized that they should be their own priority. A lot of us feel the need to constantly be taking care of those around us, which is an incredible quality to have. However, when you are worried about taking care of everyone else, you sometimes forget to take care of yourself. Make sure that in 2016, you take the time to ask yourself if you need anything throughout the day. Take care of you because if you are not okay, there is no way you will ever be able to take care of everyone else.
15. Take A Break From Technology
Technology has without a doubt taken over our society. Without realizing, we spend more than half of our day either on our phone or our computer. Everything in our world is digital and although it can be incredible, it also has its downfalls. We have sadly found ourselves separated from the simple things in life like nature and literature. Take the time this year to cut away from the addictive world of social media and get back to your roots. Enjoy the other things life has to offer, it is sure to do more good than you realize.
14. Make it a Point to Meet New People
I am a firm believer that everyone you meet has something to teach you. We as humans tend to live within the realms of our comfort zones, which is really not something to be proud of. Meeting new people and learning from them is one of the best (and free) life experiences you can have. Opening yourself up and stepping out of your comfort zone may lead you to be pleasantly surprised by what can happen next. Who knows, you can meet a new friend, a new lover or even someone that can help you out with your future. Don’t be closed off to anyone, because like I said before, everyone on this earth has something they can teach you.
Yes, you read correctly, sleep is something not enough people give credit to. Sleep is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. A lot of us unfortunately have bad sleeping habits, which without realizing affects us when we are awake. Our bodies do need at least eight hours of sleep every night, which a lot of us don’t get. This is a little thing that has the capacity to go a long way. Sleep is more important than we think, and by getting more sleep we are sure to see a difference in our daily activities.
12. Spend Time With Family
Family is something that is so special and sacred to so many people. However, with today’s technology, a lot of people don’t see the need to get on a plane to see their loved ones when they can simply FaceTime them. Although technology has done a lot of good for families living in different geographic locations, it has also done a lot of bad for families living in the same area code. Family time has turned into family members sitting with one another on their phones. We have all been guilty of spending time scrolling through Instagram instead of appreciating those around us, so in 2016, this should really be something we all work on.
11. Don’t Look for Happiness in the Place You Lost It
This is a very important concept that everyone should try and understand. As humans, we tend to focus on the negative aspects in our life. We have all experienced different types of hardships, which have lead us to feel a bit negatively about ourselves. Happiness is something that everyone in the world strives for, but so many people seek it from the wrong places. If someone broke your heart, don’t expect them to be the one to put it back together. Happiness truly does come from within and it is not something that can be found by back-tracking your life.
Journaling is not only a great way of letting out some steam but it is also a great way of keeping your memories alive. Yes I know, we now have Facebook for that, but there is something much more personal about reading a journal in 20 years from now than there is about checking Facebook. Journaling is a way of being honest with yourself and connecting with your emotions. This is a great habit to get into this year because it is a simple way of getting to know yourself better. Your journal is a place where you do not need to hold anything back and you can truly speak from the heart. It is a cheap and therapeutic way of being in control of not only your emotions but your life.
9. Say Yes!
We live in a world of “No’s”. Almost every time a friend calls asks me to do something remotely out of the ordinary I say no and I am sure I am not the only one. Let’s get something straight, saying yes more doesn’t mean saying yes to everything. However to every five no’s in a week, there should be at least one yes. This is to open your horizons and experience new things. Try a new restaurant or maybe go on a date with someone you normally wouldn’t, whatever it is be open to the word yes!
8. Make Your Bed Every Day
This may sound silly, but trust me, there is a method to my madness. Our daily routine is something that subconsciously controls us. Most people wake up in the morning, having slept to the last minute, with only enough time to get dressed and go to work. A lot of people don’t realize that doing something simple like making your bed every morning can lead you to have a more organized and productive day. Also, having your bed made in the morning makes getting into it at night that much better! Sometimes, by tweaking a little habit you have, you can potentially make a huge difference in your daily life.
7. Find a Hobby
This may sound like a cliché but find a hobby that makes you feel good. It could be anything from a physical activity to a do it yourself project. By finding a hobby that makes you happy you will see a lot of positive outcome. A lot of people say, “I don’t have time for a hobby” which is a complete lie, not to mention a horrible excuse. Instead of sitting on the couch aimlessly watching TV after work, find something to do that will truly and simply just bring you pleasure. A lot of people find working out to be a positive hobby; yoga, spinning and running are some of the most popular workouts. Others dabble in different arts and crafts. Whatever it is, just do it because you enjoy it. You will find it to be an incredible stress reliever.
6. Be Less Negative
This is something almost everyone can relate to. We live in such a pessimistic society that optimism is perceived as delusion. It is understandable why we as people feel this way; our world has evolved in a way that is unpredictable and our society has truly put impact on the wrong things in life. We as humans tend to focus our energy on the negative and we are so hard on both ourselves and other people. Every day, instead of telling your friends and family what went wrong with your day, tell them all the positive things that happened to you. If we continue living life with a negative perspective there is very little hope for the generations following.
5. Cut Out Toxic People
Cutting out toxic people from your life is one of the most important things you will ever do for yourself. A lot of the time, we like to give people the benefit of the doubt. However, sadly, most of the time we shouldn’t. There are a lot of people in this world that don’t necessarily want what is best for you. You know exactly who the toxins in your life are and sadly those are the people who you should be eliminating from your life. There comes a time in everyone’s life where they understand why older people always told you “you should be able to count all your friends on one hand.”
4. Complain Less
I feel like the older we get the more we complain, which is baffling to me. I believe that with age, should come appreciation for everything life has to offer, both good and bad. We complain about everything, even things we have no control over. If you appreciate more than you complain, you will find yourself to begin reaching a new sense of self-awareness. Also, instead of complaining about the things in life that bother you, try and fix those that you can. For example, most women complain about their weight, but don’t eat right or work out – instead of putting their energy into making a change, they put their energy in complaining about it. I like to call those people lazy!
3. Spend More Alone Time
Make 2016 the year that you became your own best friend. We tend to feel the need to be surrounded by people in order to feel loved, which is a horrible way of looking at it. Love first comes from yourself and self-love is one of the most attractive qualities you can possess. Getting to know yourself and taking care of yourself is one of the greatest gifts you will receive. There is something comforting about being content with being alone. Yes, we all want to find love and yes, we all enjoy being surrounded by people, but it won’t be as significant if you haven’t truly gotten to know yourself.
2. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
This is something we have all done, and it is one of the worst things you can do for yourself. Everyone you meet has qualities that you may want, however they also have qualities you wouldn’t want. We are all individually our own person and that is good enough. I am sure I am not the only one who has spent countless hours analyzing my boyfriend’s ex, asking myself if she is prettier or skinner than me. Most of the time we compare ourselves to somebody solely on a superficial level which is awful. Comparing yourself to someone is never a good idea, so instead of comparing, take the qualities you admire in them and try to use them in your life. At the end of the day you need to understand that there is only one you in the world, and you are doing a good job at being that person.
1. Celebrate Yourself
In 2016, the most important thing to do is to celebrate you. We have all been through countless hardships and we are all still here. Our lives are journeys and through those journeys there are countless accomplishments, some bigger than others. If you learn how to embrace your accomplishments and celebrate yourself you will find yourself appreciating you more. There is so much for all of us to celebrate and doing so is a way of telling yourself that you did well. We are all our own worst enemies and toughest critics which is why it is important to cut ourselves some slack and celebrate the beautiful creation that is you.
