Do I have your attention?
Negativity is bound to be in your life at some point during the day. It is an inevitable unstoppable force, whether it be at work, at school, at home, or from anything you read on the internet. With all of the heartbreaking stories in the media as of late, it is a wonder we can find anything but negativity as we navigate our day to day lives. There are problems all around the world. There are problems in our personal lives. There are problems down the street from where we live. What has developed over time is this monumental shift in how we perceive life and how we treat each other.
I know the title of this article promotes inspiration, but to get to what I hope inspires you, I have to give you the reason why I am here, sitting at my keyboard, trying to make a difference word by word in helping whoever comes across this to have a different view of life. A restoration in humanity if you will. I wish I could sit here and tell you that maintaining positivity comes easily, but if you have been informed of what is going on locally, as well as globally, you will understand why I say these words.
Now more than ever I feel it necessary to try and be a source of positive and motivating light for you, the reader. Are you having a bad day? Are you down because of something you saw whilst scrolling across your Facebook feed? Do you feel stuck in your current situation? Are you constantly questioning what your purpose is? Hopefully some of these quotes along with my personal experiences/beliefs can help propel you in a different direction. I will preface this with the fact that I am in no way a professional. However, I am a person who is passionate about people living up to their full potentials; especially on the darkest of days.
Even if unintentional, we are bound to be affected in some way by what we are surrounded by, what we read, what we watch, or what people say to or about us.
What I’m essentially trying to say in the simplest of terms is that positivity is a much needed topic on the internet these days. As such, I have compiled this list along with my personal thoughts and cheers for you to remember that no matter what – you can be the difference.
15. “The real opportunity for success lies within the person and not in the job.” – Zig Ziglar
I myself am probably the guiltiest of thinking that the job makes the person. There are a number of places of employ that have made me absolutely miserable. Maintaining a positive outlook is never easy when you spend most of your time in a place that feeds a big fat zero to your soul. But, keep your head up. You are placed where you are right now for a reason; learn from it, grow from it; move on and be happy for the opportunity afforded to you.
14. “The mind is everything. What you think you become.” – Buddha
I don’t know if meditation is your jam, but I will tell you, it is a truly helpful tool. I know most working adults with families have a hard time finding even five minutes alone, but even five minutes can be significantly rewarding. When doubt starts to creep in about how not far along in life you are, or what your life plan was mapped out to be that has yet to be achieved, remember thoughts do become actions. If you can’t seem to find that peace, let your mind wander during mundane tasks. Everyone needs “me” time. It nourishes your spirit, and, you know you deserve it… Just no mind wandering during something like cooking dinner – the potential ending could be tragic.
13. “You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.” – Christopher Columbus
When others have success, a lot of what we witness is the aftermath of the hard work. Every person who has ever gotten where they are started somewhere. I like to believe it starts with a dream or a passion that you have to work to manifest every single day. Hard work sucks sometimes; let’s call it what it is. In a perfect world, things would be “silver platter” easy. I have heard that expression many times over in my lifetime and sometimes I wanted that shiny platter. I wanted that easy route. If I’m being honest, even now I would like at least one part of my life to be so ridiculously easy, it doesn’t seem real. But I hear hard work builds character or something, so if that’s true, perhaps we all can keep pushing forward to that end result?
12. “Pick the day. Enjoy it – to the hilt. The day as it comes. People as they come… The past, I think, has helped me appreciate the present, and I don’t want to spoil any of it by fretting about the future.” ― Audrey Hepburn
Do you see the words on your screen?? Audrey is one of those timeless beauties who did amazing things with her life. Failure, or what we believe to be failure of our own lives, is all about perception. So you didn’t accomplish what you’d hoped to by now in life. Why fret? Tomorrow is a new day. It’s a new opportunity to keep pushing; a new opportunity to accomplish goals; a new opportunity to kick the sketchy thoughts about yourself to the curb. Life is one of those very easy things to take for granted. Especially when thinking about all that you do not have. Yesterday was a learning experience. Today is a growing experience. Tomorrow is whatever you choose to make. Live free, people!
11. “The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.” – Steve Jobs
Truer words could never be spoken, am I right? If you haven’t found what it is you absolutely love to do right now, it really is okay. It doesn’t make you less of a person because others around you seem to have it all figured out. The “late bloomers” in life have just as good a chance of making it as those who have known their life’s calling since before they could walk. Do you know why you have just as good a chance? Because loving what you do has absolutely no boundaries. Loving something means you are passionate about it, and when passion is involved in any portion of your life, things escalate to a whole new level of exciting. Just wait, it’s there. When it comes to you, remember me saying I told you so.
10. “Happiness is not something readymade. It comes from your own actions.” – Dalai Lama
What is happiness? It’s hard to define in a sense because happiness to each person is different. What makes me happy will not necessarily have the same effect as it does on you. But what I believe the takeaway from this can be is that you choose to either have a good day or a bad day. For example, getting cut off in traffic by some jerk who clearly doesn’t understand the rules of the road. That scenario has ruined my day more times than I care to count. I could’ve simply spun it into thinking that perhaps the car cut me off to keep me from a more serious road incident. Little instances are the sum total of a day. No matter how bad it seems, a positive outlook will carry you way further than a negative one.
9. “If you look at what you have in life, you’ll always have more. If you look at what you don’t have in life, you’ll never have enough.” – Oprah Winfrey
If there is ever a person who has overcome a hefty amount of adversity, it is Oprah. She is an inspirational and respected figure for a reason. When I first read this quote, I sat and thought about it for a good five minutes. I recalled all that I have and all that I didn’t. Oprah hit it right on the head, you can always have more, or you can never have enough. In this present moment, think about how far you’ve come. Sometimes, it helps to actually write it down (*gasp* paper and pen? I know, it’s a completely insane idea). I bet you will find that you have achieved a lot more than you thought. With so much negativity in the world, it’s almost a physical reprogramming of ourselves to be positive. Baby steps – you’ll get there.
8. “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
Environments that you are surrounded by can sometimes be toxic. As with most of this article, I speak from personal experience. A toxic environment can strip away all that we have achieved thus far to get to this point in our journey of inspiration, but fret not. It all comes back to choosing how to let others affect you. If your current situation has got you engulfed in a pool of small minds, get up and walk away. Don’t feed into the hamster cycle that goes round and round with the same results. Remember, the great minds are the world changers. Sometimes the current is a test of will. Prove to yourself that you can and will do better. Be the optimist in a pool of pessimists.
7. “The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you first find yourself.” – Mark Caine
Shout out to knowing you are capable of more! Success again is definitive of you. Waking up without hitting snooze can be someone’s success in the morning. If you feel like at this point in your life you are stuck not doing what you want, or that you will be in that crappy job forever, or you dread that one coworker whose misery oozes into your bubble, or your relationship with your partner ended in a fight, sometimes taking that little step to be the bigger person is when you cross over the line of limited thinking. When you free yourself to the possibilities of what lies in wait for you, things have a funny way of working out.
6. “Be happy with what you have. Be excited about what you want.” – Alan Cohen
So you are sitting in front of the computer thinking that the “grass is greener” so to speak. Or maybe that life is one enormous cliché of false hope to get you through. Trust me, I have had these thoughts. I get in moods where no matter what I read or think about in a positive light, zero effect on my mentality is had. Thinking about all that I want to accomplish is sometimes all that carries me through each day. Know that bumps in the road happen. You are not alone. Right now do me a favor – think about just one thing you really want right now… did you get excited about the possibility of actually having it? Let that be your drive forward!
5. “Everything is a gift of the universe–even joy, anger, jealously, frustration, or separateness. Everything is perfect either for our growth or our enjoyment.” – Ken Keyes Jr.
Say what, Mr. Keyes? Anger? Jealousy? Those are gifts?… Okay, okay, I suppose he is right. If you have that pesky positive mentality I have subliminally been putting in your minds, you can see where he makes complete and total sense. There was a time where I would have laughed hysterically at the words with negative connotations as a “helpful” tool, but if you think about it, life boils down to how you handle what you go through every day. I once worked with a person who was a ray of sunshine every day she came to the office. Honestly, someone in her life could have died and you would never know. She taught me a lot about optimism and the way I look at things. It didn’t matter what she was going through, or if someone affected her negatively at work. She never showed it. If you ever have the opportunity to be around someone like that, really take it in. It has been one of the best learning and growth experiences I have ever had as a person.
4. “If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy, and inspires your hopes.” – Andrew Carnegie
Remember how we talked earlier about this world and literally everything surrounding you has the potential to negatively impact you? Well, this is the time to dig deep. Really deep. This is when you believe all of the things you are putting forth in your mind and let it take hold of the energy you put out into the world. I personally love this quote. It is one of my favorites. As I have stated prior, I have bad days; genuine horrible days. Sometimes in a row. But then I think I am one of those “late bloomers” who has a passion. A passion for the written word (can you tell) and I let that guide all of my energy and focus. So far? It’s been working out pretty well.
3. “Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” – Buddha
Because Buddha is Buddha and can have a spot twice on the road to inspiration. If you really sit down and let this quote resonate with you, you will understand the brilliance of it. Think of me as this single candle if you will. Happiness, inspiration, positivity; all of it will never decrease by me trying to make your day better. It really is that simple, folks. Make a total stranger smile today. It feels really good. AND, you never know how much that person will truly need to hear the kind words you have offered them. It’s happened to me, and kindness doesn’t get enough credit for its effects.
2. “In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you.” – Deepak Chopra
I know I spoke of meditation briefly earlier. This is what immediately comes to my mind. Stillness and finding peace inside of you when everything around you is screaming for you to stress out. I loathe stress. It is unfortunately a part of life, but there are ways to cope. Every quote that we have been reading up to now was a training of sorts. Being able to find stillness within is a really special thing. Some may say it sounds “stupid” or “unbelievable” (as with probably all of this list of quotes), however, these are the exact people that will help you achieve peace and stillness. Blocking out the negativity is all we are trying to achieve. “I love being mad and frustrated all of the time. Feels great.” – No one ever.
1. “Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.” – Benjamin Franklin
I can appreciate Ben for this. I have always found writing a very creative way to express myself and a few years ago, I realized that writing to inspire was something I wanted to do as part of my life. It didn’t have to be my whole life, but a portion of it to help even just one person. If reading a list of quotes heard time and time again has been an inspiration to you on this go around, then I have completed what I set out to do. For you, it doesn’t have to be writing necessarily. Just remember to take your mindset to an uplifting one. You will find it is a much more enjoyable way to live life.
