Some call it marijuana, others call it cannabis, pot, weed, ganja, kaya, herb, grass, dope. These are all popular terms, just as smoking joints, blunts, bongs or vaporizers, are also popular terms. Celebrities are no exceptions to using these terms, when openly discussing their marijuana habits. There are many stereotypes that are associated with marijuana use, such as being lazy, unmotivated and loving to eat cereal. Celebrities that openly admit to smoking cannabis challenge those stereotypes, but can also find themselves being scrutinized by the media. These celebrities don’t consider marijuana a hard drug like heroin or cocaine, and many of them become pot activists in a way, as they go on shows and discuss their casual cannabis use. Here is a look at 11 celebrities who smoke marijuana.
11) Seth Rogen
Seth Rogen is an avid and very open pot smoker. He started out performing stand up comedy around Vancouver and eventually met Judd Apatow, who would cast him in Freaks and Geeks. He had his big breakthrough with Knocked Up and had success with Superbad, which he co-wrote with Evan Goldberg. In 2008, Rogen and Goldberg co-wrote the stoner comedy, Pineapple Express that starred Rogen as a process server, and his pot dealer, James Franco. They are on the run from bad guys after Dale is witness to a murder. Also, they smoke a lot of weed while on the run and get really high, a lot. The film is named after the strain of marijuana known as Pineapple Express. Additionally, Seth Rogen is a member of National Organization for the Reform Law of Marijuana (NORML).
10) Dave Chappelle
Dave Chappelle admits to smoking a lot of weed early in his career, specifically around the time he co-wrote Half Baked, a stoner comedy about three pot loving best friends. In his early stand up special, Killing them Softly from 1999, Chappelle tells a classic story about buying weed from a baby. His first special featured a lot of jokes about himself and others smoking weed. He later stated on Inside the Actors Studio that he quit smoking. However, his second special, For What it’s Worth, also contained stories about marijuana.

Zach Galifianakis has a had a very successful career, first as a stand up comedian that lead to a stand up special on Comedy Central Presents. He has also appeared in a number of successful films including, Dinner with Schmucks, It’s Kind of a Funny Story and co-starred in The Hangover Trilogy. He also hosts a very popular web series on Funny or Die called, Between Two Ferns with Zack Galifianakis. He most famously appeared on an episode of Real Time with Bill Maher to discuss the legalization of marijuana where Galifianakis smoked a joint on the show, and he even attempted to pass it around.
8) Bill Maher
Bill Maher has just about done it all. He’s had a successful stand up career, including an HBO special in 2010 called, But I’m Not Wrong, wrote and starred in the documentary, Religulous and also hosts his own talk shows. The first was Politically Incorrect on ABC, and currently, Real Time with Bill Maher, on HBO. Bill Maher is a strong advocate for the legalization of marijuana, and he sits on the board of NORML and The Marijuana Policy Party. He’s also had many shows in which Bill and his guests discuss the legalization of marijuana.
7) Rob Van Dam
Rob Van Dam is a world renowned professional wrestler, and is one of the most popular of all time. He’s been noted for his hard hitting and very athletic style. He had success in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), where at one time was both the WWE World Champion and ECW World Champion. Rob Van Dam had also had success in the underground Extreme Championship Wrestling in the late 90’s, where he held the ECW TV Title for 700 days. Rob Van Dam is an advocate for smoking marijuana and himself, has been smoking since his early 20’s. In an article that he wrote for Cannabis Culture Magazine, he noted that he is a very healthy person and sees benefits from pot. He also notes that he smokes before and after a wrestling match. In 2006, Van Dam was arrested for being in the possession of 18 grams of marijuana. He was eventually released, but his arrest violated WWE’s wellness policy and he lost both of his titles and was suspended for 30 days. He continues to wrestle all over the world and continues to be a advocate for cannabis use.
6) Miley Cyrus
One of the most controversial figures is Miley Cyrus. Miley had small roles in films like Big Fish, before having her breakthrough as Hannah Montana. Since then, she has released several albums, and has appeared in films such as The Last Song. The track Wrecking Ball from the 2013 album, Bangerz, charted on the Billboard 100 list. She has stirred up controversy recently with her provocative sexy image, her wild party life and twerking all over the place. Also, she sings and admits to consuming many drugs. At the 2013 MTV Europe Music awards, she apparently smoked a joint on stage while accepting her award. Clearly, she is a very open pot smoker and constantly reminds the world that “I love weed”. She’s just being Miley, ya’ll.
5) Snoop Dogg
Snoop Dogg and Marijuana go together like bread and butter or milk and cereal or… Snoop Dogg and Marijuana. Snoop Dog (or Snoop Lion) is one of the most famous and recognizable hip hop artists of all time. Cannabis has been a part of Snoop Dogg’s image since the start of his career. He was discovered by Dr. Dre and released his debut album, DoggieStyle, in 1993. In 1997, his album the Dogfather was certified double platinum. He attempted to quit smoking pot in 2002 but that did not stick. As of 2013, Snoop Dogg claims that he smokes 80 blunts a day…just follow him on Instagram and you can see he’s not lying.
4) Willie Nelson
Willie Nelson is a world famous country singer who was born during the great depression. He had his big breakthrough with the 1973 album, Shotgun Willie, and Red Headed Stranger in 1975. Mr. Nelson is heavily involved in the legalization of marijuana and he is a board member of the activist group, NORML. He even hosted the first ever “Willie Nelson and NORML Golf Tournament” in 2004. In 2010, he was arrested for possession of marijuana and after created the Teapot Party.
Rihanna is undoubtedly one of the proudest pot smokers. Originally from Barbados, Rihanna was signed to Def Jam Recordings by its then President, Jay Z in 2005. She is considered one the best selling artists of all time. Riri has also appeared on the cover of Maxim and FHM, as well as appeared in several Top Sexiest Lists. Despite constantly being under the harsh spotlight, Rihanna in no way hides her love for pot smoking.

Bob Marley’s image is possibly the most associated with marijuana use. Bob was a Jamaican reggae artist whose hits include Jammin, No Women, No Cry, Buffalo Soldier and many more. He is one of the world’s best selling artists and an international superstar, even after his 1981 death. He was also a devoted Rastafarian, who consumed marijuana in a spiritual act, in order to clear his mind, obtain peacefulness and insight. This would become a part of Bob Marley and his image that would transcend time. He would also incorporate both cannabis and the Rasta lifestyle into his music.
1) Tommy Chong
In the 1960’s, Tommy Chong met Cheech Marin and they formed the famous stoner comedy duos, Cheech and Chong. They are known for embracing the hippie counterculture and of course, they love pot. After a long and lucrative career, Tommy and Cheech had a falling out in the 80’s. Cheech was over the pot lifestyle, while Tommy was just getting started. However, in recent years, Tommy Chong had to serve a prison sentence from October 8, 2003 to July 7, 2004, for marketing and selling drug paraphernalia, Chong’s Bongs. Chong pleaded guilty, only so that charges would not be brought against his wife, Shelby Chong and son, Paris. The case and situation formed part of the documentary known as A/K/A: Tommy Chong. Since his release, Cheech and Chong have reformed and have had several tours. Tommy Chong continues his work as a pot activist as a board member of The National Organization for the Reform Law of Marijuana (NORML) and contributes to Cannabis Culture Magazine. In June 2012, he revealed that he had prostate cancer and then on July 15, 2012, Chong sent out a tweet indicating that with the help of Hemp Oil, he was 99 % Cancer Free.
