Many 20th century writers felt America’s traditional values were declining and that instead of progressing, their beloved country was becoming superficial. Having now entered the 21st century, these writers would surely roll over in their graves seeing what is considered “news” and what pop culture cares about. Case in point: the Kardashians.
It is hard to not know about the Kardashians as their names are everywhere. However, if you are not familiar with their story here is a brief overview. Kris Jenner was a flight attendant who married Robert Kardashian and had four children with him: Kim, Kourtney, Khloe and Rob. After divorcing Robert Kardashian, Kris married Bruce Jenner, had two more daughters, Kendall and Kylie, and ended up becoming her kids’ manager.
The most famous of her children, Kim Kardashian, is known for a sex tape, a 72-day marriage and hanging out with the rich and famous. The Kardashians also have their own reality TV show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which was launched in 2007 and is still on the air.
What do you think? Are the Kardashians shaming America? Read the following list to find out 10 reasons why many people believe they are.
10. They Make Americans Look Uneducated
It’s no secret, America is often stereotyped as not being the brightest tool in the shed. Having the Kardashians everywhere in the media blasting dumb comments only furthers that stereotype. Indeed, giving the Kardashians so much attention is like having a giant sign that says “we are America and we don’t care how rude, egocentric and ignorant you are, as long as you’re pleasing to the eyes, that’s all that matters”.
9. They’re Incredibly Vain
Who wouldn’t be vain if they got title of “the hottest woman in the world”? However, the Kardashian vanity goes even beyond what you would except for a reality show celebrity. As stated in Rolling Stone magazine, the Kardashian vanity is “impervious to the outside world.” Incidentally, the famous playwright Edward Albee wrote plays demonstrating his fear that America’s core values were declining and being replaced by vain beach-bodied ideals. It would appear he had reason to be afraid. America’s values have apparently been steadily declining, as shown by the popularity of the Kardashians and what they stand for.
8. They’re a Horrible Example of Having Family Values
No one’s family is “normal” per se. Some families are more dysfunctional than others, though, one of which is the Kardashians. Kris Jenner has been accused of “pimping” her kids, exploiting them for money, with rumors suggesting she was behind the leaked sex tape.
Of course many people believe that how you raise your kids is your own personal business, and no one can judge the way you decide to rear them. However, Kris takes the cake. Kim has stated: “My mom and I have always had this funny weird cute competition.” As Khloé Kardashian noted, they are continuously having “a MILF-off.” Yup, just one big normal family, alright.
7. They’re Generally Useless
What do the Kardashians do anyway? Entertain. That’s pretty much it. Of course you might think “there are plenty of other celebrities who are only famous because they entertain.” That may be true, however, the Kardashians are particularly useless. Take someone like Hugh Jackman for example. He is indeed entertaining but he is also so much more than just a good looking man. The X-Men films are worldwide successes and he is constantly helping charities. The Kardashians, on the other hand, roll in money from their reality TV show and scandals.
6. They Have Huge Egos
As Rolling Stone magazine stated, “the Kardashians are the last ladies standing in reality TV because they’ve simply always believed they were celebrities”. Their egos are what has carried them this far. However, their blatant self-worth also comes with a price: the inability to grow. And all this without mentioning Kanye West and his overblown ego.
5. They Demonstrate That Looks are More Important Than Character
According to Dr. Helen Wright, head of an all-girl boarding school, Kim Kardashian is a symbol of everything that is wrong with western culture. Indeed, the Kardashians are a symptom of a deep rooted problem not just in America, but all over the western world: women are taught to prioritize their looks over their character.
Take child beauty pageants, for example. Girls are taught at a very young age that they need to prioritize their looks or they are a nobody. Of course there is nothing wrong with being beautiful, what woman doesn’t want to feel attractive? But women’s value should not solely rest upon their appearance.
4. They Re-enforce Premature Sexualisation
“Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins.” Sound familiar? It’s the opening line of Vladimir Nabokov’s famous book Lolita. When the book was published, it caused a great deal of controversy as it told the story of Dolores Haze who is abducted and assaulted by the narrator, Humbert Humbert. Kubrick’s cinematic interpretation greatly impacted American culture by portraying Dolores as a premature, overly-sexualized 14-year-old instead of a regular 12-year-old (as described in the novel).
The Kardashians re-enforce the same problem. Just look at Kendall and Kylie Jenner. They teach young girls to become overtly sexual at a young age and further the objectification of women.
3. They’re Incredibly Rude
You have probably heard of Michael Brown, the unarmed black 18-year-old who was shot and killed by a white officer in 2014. During the 2014 MTV VMAs, a moment of silence was taken to pay respects for the death of teen.
For some reason, the Kardashian sisters could not even take a few minutes of their lives to be respectful and insisted on texting and even chatting during the moment of silence. The result was an inexhaustible fury over social media, and for good reason.
2. They Don’t Take Motherhood Seriously
The Kardashians treat motherhood as a joke. As previously stated, Kris Jenner has been accused of using her children for her own personal gain (though her daughters deny this). However, Kris and Kim may not be the only questionable parents. According to Rolling Stone, Kourtney Kardashian, pregnant with her third child in 2014, giggled “Scott [the baby’s father] wants to kill himself!” So the father of her children is so unhappy at he idea of having another child he’s joking about killing himself and she finds it amusing. Apparently motherhood is a big joke, who knew?
1. They are Terrible Role Models
Whether it’s right or wrong, kids, teens and adults alike look up to celebrities as role models. These women are what young girls are supposed to have as role models? Making money through physical appearance, scandal and meanness rather than honest hard work and intelligence? The amount of attention the Kardashians are getting shows how America values them and the ideals they portray. After women had to fight so long and hard for equal rights, and continue to fight today, one would hope that America would be able to stop telling girls that they need to essentially be “sex symbols” to be somebody. Apparently, that is not the case.
