When it comes to traits that can help improve your life, there may not be a more valuable one than a strong sense of confidence in yourself. Part of being confident in yourself is making sure that you love who you are as a person. There is an old cliché that you cannot love someone else if you don’t love yourself, but there is truth in that statement. Someone who lacks the ability to love him or herself, may find it harder to find someone to love them.
It is clear that confidence can impact several areas of your life, which we will go over, but it is also important to always remember that this is not easy. Building up your sense of confidence is something that may fluctuate every day, but just because today is a tough day, it doesn’t mean tomorrow has to be.
However, what you will find is that the more active effort you put into improving your sense of confidence, the more it may increase. I used to look in front of a mirror every single day, and if I did not find myself attractive in my outfit, I went and I got changed. It radically changed my fashion sense (for the better, hopefully!) but also taught myself that confidence is something that you can build up every single day.
I don’t look in the mirror every day in that way anymore, but you can believe that the long lasting confidence that I got from that experience impacts me every single day (even if I don’t realize it at the time).
If you are finding yourself struggling to find a sense of confidence, perhaps reading this list will help you find some motivation. These are the 10 biggest areas of your life that can be improved with confidence, and as a result, are also 10 things that people with confidence do better.
10. Their Job
I don’t know if you know this, but your job is a pretty important part of your life. The more confident you feel in your place of employment, the more optimistic you may feel about your future. Confidence does not mean always knowing what to do. Sometimes you are going to make mistakes, but you can still be confident that overall you’re doing an excellent job. Confidence leads to you having the ability to ask questions when you are confused, instead of making mistakes and not realizing until it is too late. If you are confident in your job, it may also lead to a much stronger positive attitude and that can not only lead to promotions (woohoo!) but also make you seem like someone who is easy to work with.
9. Their Outlook On Unemployment
As valuable as confidence is when you are in your place of employment, it is just as important when you are going through a transition period in your life. It is totally okay to feel like your future is uncertain, and if you are going through a rough patch, there may not be much reason to be optimistic. In these moments don’t put confidence in the process, but put confidence in who you are as a person and the things you have already accomplished in your life. Nobody gets a job by not applying, and if you are suffering from depression (perhaps largely brought on by unemployment) it may take even longer for you to feel like you’re going to see things turn around. If you are confident that unemployment is only a speed bump on the road of life, then you may find yourself more willing to take leaps and continue searching when things get tough.
8. Their Friendships
It should not be a shock that people like to hang out with others who are optimistic, and generally in a good mood. The more confident you feel in your life, the more you should feel that way. As a result, you may start to see your friendships further develop. Your friends love you, and hopefully a confident you is also a version of you that your friends recognize and support. Friends can also be influential if you are starting to feel your confidence start to slip. For many individuals, their most important relationship is the one with their friends, and there is every reason for that to help increase your confidence.
7. Their Sex Life
One of the biggest turnoffs in the bedroom is a lover who is lacking confidence. Nobody is going to be amazing at sex the first time, and it’s important to realize that and not let any negative experiences diminish your confidence. Everyone has awkward moments, but an unconfident lover may let those awkward moments not only plague the current session but the sessions going forward as well. In contrast, a confident lover can be a fantastic trait to have. You may find yourself being more adventurous, having more enjoyable sex and feeling like it is something that can be an open discussion for your relationship.
6. They’re More Outgoing
It can be really easy to feel like you don’t have the energy to go out when you are not feeling great about yourself. If you can start to increase your sense of confidence, you may start seeking out opportunities to be out and about. I used to hate going out, until I didn’t let myself leave the house until I said something nice about myself to help increase my sense of confidence. If you are confident in what you love, you may also find yourself more willing to expand your comfort zone and try out new activities. What’s the worst that could happen? At the very least it’s just another new experience.
If you find yourself in a romantic relationship, you may easily notice the difference in your partner when they are feeling confident versus when they are not. The more confident you feel in yourself, the more you may be willing to put the effort into your relationship because you know that you and your partner deserve it. A healthy relationship also may be one that takes energy, and if you are always feeling drained you may not be up for putting in the work that is required. Similarly, if you are in a relationship that is not healthy, it may take a healthy (and confident) frame of mind on your end to realize that and get out of it.
4. Their Sense Of Fashion
One of the biggest deterrents to feeling confident in yourself may be found when you look at your wardrobe. Fashion does not have to be expensive to be good, but clothes that suit your body will do a world of difference for your confidence. Not even Ryan Gosling is going to be able to pull off dirty sweatpants that have been worn for 9 days straight. One of the biggest ways to not only increase but keep a sense of confidence is to make sure you are always proud of how you look and what you are presenting to the world.
3. Being Single
It can be really hard to be single, but there are a lot of amazing things that you can experience that you cannot in a relationship. However, if you are feeling particularly down after a breakup, it may be partially because you developed your sense of self as being dependent on your relationship. Not only will being confident increase your relationship when you are in one, but it will also make being single seem like a whole lot less of a big deal. Be confident that you are an amazing person, and worthy of a relationship. Once you can convince yourself of that, then it really is just waiting for the right person and the right timing to come along.
2. Their Overall Approach To Mental Health
The biggest thing that will improve when you further your sense of confidence? Easily it is your state of your overall mental health. Every single person in this lifetime is going to be faced with adversity, but the more confident you are, the more confident you should be that the adversity will pass and it will leave you with a stronger sense of self. Improving your confidence will also improve your belief that there is nothing you cannot accomplish if you put your mind to it. Nobody likes to feel like they are constantly beating themselves up, so take the time instead to find qualities in who you are that make you feel confident about yourself.
1. Their Own Interests
The more confident you feel, the more open you may be to experiencing different things because you already have great experiences where you opened up your comfort zone. If you find yourself more confident in a person, you may also have a really great sense of what it is in your life that matters to you. It doesn’t matter if your passion is baking, photography or otherwise, the more confident you are, the more you may find yourself sharing those passions with others around you (which spoiler alert? Increases confidence). It’s a lot more refreshing to go on a date with someone that knows what they love, then going out with someone who just seems to agree with everything you say.
