A wedding – especially for a woman, is often one of the most important days of her life. It’s something she’s dreamed about and has started to plan from a very young age. Today, weddings have become more about the ‘show’ – who has the most delicious food, the best band, the most expensive venue, the largest amount of guests, the costliest wedding gown – than it is about the celebration of love between two people. But for some unexplainable reason, in the world of celebrity, there are stars who go out of their way to avoid their weddings becoming the biggest, best and most talked abut event of the year, and take extreme measures to keep it a secret.
Here are 10 celebs who went to great lengths to keep their weddings a secret.
10. Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green
It was a sunset Hawaiian wedding for former 90210 alum, Brian Austin Green and his Transformers babe, Megan Fox in the summer of 2010. The couple who began dating in 2004, wed in a private ceremony at the Four Seasons Resort in Maui. The bride chose a flowing white dress to walk down the sun-kissed sandy beach which was presided over by a kahuna (Hawaiian priest). Green’s eight-year-old son Kassius (his mother is Brian’s former Beverly Hills cast mate, Vanessa Marcil) was the only witness. Four years later, the couple are now the proud parents of two gorgeous sons – Noah Shannon and Bodhi Ransom.
9. Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman
Following a one-year engagement, The Devil Wears Prada star Anne Hathaway married her actor/jewelry designer boyfriend in a private ceremony in Big Sur, California in September of 2012. Despite there being close to 100 people in attendance, Hathaway still managed to keep the ceremony under wraps: just months before she said ‘I do,’ the Les Miz actress bent the truth with regards to the ‘big day’ telling Hello magazine, “We’re getting married, probably sometime next year-ish. Not this year, it’s too big with two films coming out.” Decked out in custom Valentino, Hathaway reportedly hired Natalie Portman‘s wedding planner to help her with the traditional Jewish ceremony.
8. Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck
Top-secret doesn’t even begin to describe the wedding of Elektra and Daredevil otherwise knows as Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck. In April of 2005, it was announced that the couple were engaged and not long after that the extra weight Jennifer was sporting was not from eating too many donuts as was first suspected, but that she was pregnant! Just a few months later, the mega-stars were married in a uber private ceremony at the Parrot Cay Resort on the Caribbean island Turks & Caicos. The tropical wedding was so small, not even Garner’s parents were in attendance. “They’re in it for one another, not for anyone else,” said Affleck’s friend, director Kevin Smith shortly after the two were hitched. “They didn’t need or want a crowd. They just wanted each other.”
7. Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied
It was a strictly vegan menu at the secret wedding of Natalie Portman and husband Benjamin Millepied – yum! With just over 60 people in attendance, the moonlight ceremony took place in Big Sur, California. Only close family members were invited and a few A-list friends including Diane Sawyer, Rashida Jones and Macaulay Culkin. Natalie met her choreographer husband while filming the thriller Black Swan in 2009, got engaged in 2010, gave birth to their son Aleph in 2011 and hitched in 2012. Busy girl!
6. Jada Pinkett and Will Smith
It’s been 16 years since The Fresh Prince of Bel Air married his princess. Today, Will and Jada are the parents of two capricious teenagers constantly in the news and their high profile Hollywood lives could be called anything but private. But back in 1997, the Smiths pulled off a very lavish, very secret wedding ceremony, tying the knot in front of 100 guests in a medieval-style mansion in Baltimore. According to People magazine, friends and family had to pass two security checkpoints before being allowed to enter the 65-year-old private house known as the Cloisters. To avoid the location being leaked, no invitations were sent out, instead guests were notified the morning of the ceremony and given directions which they were to hand over to the fleet of limo drivers who were hired for the day. The party lasted into the wee hours of the morning with Smith providing some of the musical entertainment – at one point in the night, he jumped onstage to sing a rendition of his own hit song, Getting’ Jiggy Wit It.
5. Jessica Alba and Cash Warren
Jessica Alba was the epitome of a glowing bride (she was pregnant!) when she walked down the Beverly Hills courthouse aisle and married her producer fiancé, Cash Warren. The lovebirds met on the set of the 2005 film, The Fantastic Four and three years later, decided to make it official, with no family or friends in attendance to witness the union – talk about a a small affair! The bride kept it simple, skipping the traditional white gown and instead donned a flowing blue dress with her hair styled in a loose ponytail. Under an arch of foliage and and silky white flowers, the couple said ‘I do’ in front of courthouse staff who also officiated the ceremony.
4. Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig
We were all shocked when word broke that English beauty Rachel Weisz had married sexy spy James Bond – a.k.a. Daniel Craig back in 2011 – no one even knew they had been dating! According to The Huffington Post, the couple wed in New York City in front of a small group of people – four to be exact including Craig’s 18-year-old daughter Ella, and Weisz’ son, Henry. “Daniel and Rachel insisted on having a small, quiet wedding. They are madly in love and couldn’t wait to be husband and wife – but they wanted minimum fuss,” reported The News of The World.
3. Kerry Washington and Nnamdi Asomugha
Though it may not have been a scandal when Kerry Washington married her former football player husband Nnamdi Asomugha, the bride managed to keep it a very low-key event. Blaine County Idaho was the location, and Washington’s parents reportedly served as witnesses. The couple who are rarely photographed together, were dating for a year before making it official in June of 2013. A source told the New York Daily News that guests were flown to the secret location in a private plane and the bride wore a plain, slim fitting white dress. “It was small, just family and close friends,” the source revealed. “They said their own vows, people stayed at the house. It was really simple and sweet.”
2. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds
With just 65 people in attendance, former Gossip Girl, Blake Lively married Canadian cutie, Ryan Reynolds in the fall of 2012. The private ceremony took place at Boone Hill Plantation in South Carolina and the reception was held in a white tent on the Plantation’s grounds. Always the fashionista, the bride wore Marchesa while her Green Lantern costar and hubby was decked out in classic Burberry. Close pal Florence Welch (of Florence and the Machine) performed at the event which included an abundant dessert table overflowing with sweet treats and a peach and white wedding cake. Guests were asked to sign non-disclosure agreements and cell phones were confiscated from those involved with the nuptials and returned after the event. Famous faces in attendance included Bette Midler, a long-time family friend.

Despite their over-the-top musical careers, power couple Beyonce and Jay-Z opted for a very small, very intimate affair when they tied the knot in 2008. In an interview with Essence magazine, Beyonce explained that she wasn’t’ a “traditional” girl and she didn’t need the event to be all about her. Having walked numerous red carpets in the past, “It’s been my day so many days already.” The ceremony took place inside Jay-Z’s New York City penthouse with the bride decked out in a voluminous white gown and the groom in a tux. An elaborate party followed with 40 family and friends in attendance including Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow and Beyonce’s former Destiny’s Child bandmates.
