Some of the most publicized celebrity weddings have been virtual media circuses. The couples have had to contend with endless flashbulbs, overhead helicopters hovering over their wedding venues, and throngs of fans trying to push their luck in entering the premises to get a look at their idols.
True, some celebrities actually crave for the attention and purposely make their walk down the aisle a huge PR event. Case in point, Kim Kardashian and her wedding to ex-husband Kris Humphries and her even more lavish wedding to current husband, Kanye West. Both events were exploited to the hilt, for the sake of her reality show’s ratings which, undoubtedly, skyrocketed. But others who don’t want or need the publicity choose to make their big day as quiet and private an affair as possible. In fact, they go to great lengths to keep their wedding from the public that they do it in secret with only a few people to stand in as witnesses.
These celebrity couples dodged the limelight and public fawning on their wedding day. They wanted to start their married lives quietly and privately, surrounded only by the people that mattered. They didn’t want to deviate from the solemnity and significance of their union—as how all weddings should be.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
Their wedding photos have been splashed all over the news, but this has been after the fact. We all knew that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were engaged, but the public wasn’t privy to their exact wedding date. The news report just suddenly appeared that the famous parents-of-six had tied the knot in a quiet ceremony in their chateau in France over the weekend of August 23, 2014. The ceremony was so intimate and personal, with only 20 of their family and close friends in attendance—and a third of that guest list already comprised of their children, who were their parents’ wedding planners!
Kerry Washington and Nnamdi Asomugha
Scandal star Kerry Washington has seemingly got it all: beauty, brains, talent, a great marriage, and a good head on her shoulders. She’s also a very private person, no different from her character Olivia Pope, who knows how to guard secrets with her life. No reports ever surfaced of Washington even dating, until it was announced that she had married NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha. The couple married in a small, secret ceremony on June 2013 in Idaho, witnessed only by a small group of family and friends.
Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell
While many girls dream of the proverbial big, white wedding with the flowers and the gown and the long aisle, Kristen Bell showed that she was very much the unconventional bride. Bell became engaged to Dax Shepard in 2010, but the couple vowed they wouldn’t tie the knot until same-sex marriage became legal in California. The law was passed in 2013 and Bell turned the tables by proposing to Shepard over Twitter. The couple had a secret civil ceremony in a Beverly Hills courthouse, with Bell saying she had always just wanted a “pen-and-paper, no frills” kind of wedding.
Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz
It was an unlikely pairing to say the least, but British actors Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz defied the odds and became an item on December 2010 after working together in the film, Dream House. The couple secretly married six months later in June 2011 in a private ceremony in New York City, where Weisz was residing with her son from a previous relationship. The wedding was so intimate that the couple had only four guests, including their respective children.
Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen
It was true love for Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen, with Fisher converting to Judaism when she got engaged to Cohen. In a romantic declaration, Fisher stated in an interview that she would have converted and practiced any religion if it meant being with Cohen, who she deems her soul mate. So even though the world knew that the two intended to marry, the couple still managed to pull one over us by marrying in a secret ceremony in Paris with only six guests in attendance.
Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez
After two failed marriages, a relationship that went awry, and an ugly custody battle, it was no wonder that Halle Berry wanted to keep her relationship with Olivier Martinez as drama-free as possible. The couple secretly wed in July 2013 in a chateau in France. The civil ceremony was said to be followed by a reception for 60 guests. The couple’s legal woes seem to be a thing of the past as they quietly settle into married life with a son and Berry’s daughter.
Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively
Unlike some celebrity couples who released photos of their secret weddings after the ceremony, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have yet to share with the public some photos of their wedding in 2012 at Mt. Pleasant in South Carolina. All we know is that they employed the help of Martha Stewart to achieve that rustic and romantic feel and that Marchesa designed Lively’s wedding gown, which got ruined during the reception. It looks like the couple plans to keep their special day private through and through.
Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo
Every woman sighed with envy when one of the sexiest men alive, Adam Levine, got engaged to equally sexy Victoria’s Secret model, Namibian Behati Prinsloo. And all hopes of the bachelor’s singlehood were dashed when it was announced that he and his fiancé wed last July 19, 2014. Held in Cabo, Mexico, the wedding was said to be sentimental yet funny, and undoubtedly very private. Of course, a wedding of a music star wouldn’t be complete without tunes playing til the wee hours, with Levine’s very own Maroon 5 belting it out, along with some other fellow musicians and bands.
Jay-Z and Beyonce
Despite being one of the richest and most famous celebrity couples in the world, Jay-Z and Beyonce were always very private about their personal lives. In fact, they never outright confirmed they were even dating, which perennially led media to a speculation frenzy through the years. Then there were rumors that the couple wed in April 2008, but again, this was never confirmed until months later when the couple would be seen out together and Beyonce was sporting a gigantic diamond ring on her finger.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner
Two high-profile break-ups with famous women made Ben Affleck want to get it right for the third time. He started dating Jennifer Garner, whom he had met on the set of Daredevil several years prior. Affleck has made no secret about his distaste for the paparazzi that constantly swarm him, Garner, and their three children, so it’s no surprise that he and Garner married in secret back in 2005 in an intimate ceremony in Turks and Caicos.
