10 Celebrities You Didn’t Know Were Farmers

There are many celebrities that enjoy living in the limelight and prefer to live in the hills of Hollywood or in the fast-paced life of New York. However, there are many celebrities that like to reside in a more laid back arena where they can forget that they are a celebrity. These a-listers take living in a rural area to the next level by living on a farm where they get their hands dirty by tending to livestock and growing crops. Believe it or not there are many celebrities that do enjoy this type of lifestyle.

Here is a list of ten celebrities who find solace and purpose through farming.

10. Reese Witherspoon

Actress, Reese Witherspoon enjoyed farm life when she resided in Ojai, California on Libbey Ranch which consisted of seven acres, filled with a nine bedroom and seven bathroom house and a barn for Witherspoon’s many farm animals. In 2012, the actress put the ranch on the market for an asking price of $10 million. However, Witherspoon had to slash the asking price three times before she was finally able to sell the home for $4,983,500 which resulted in a $816,500 loss. Since then, it appears as if Witherspoon is trying to create a new ranch oasis since she recently purchased a ranch style home in Brentwood Circle for $3 million. This is the third home purchase within Brentwood Circle by Witherspoon and there are talks the actress is looking to demolish two of the existing homes in order to create a similar retreat to what she had in Ojai.

When Singer-songwriter, Jason Mraz is not writing up beautiful music for all to hear, he is farming avocados on his five and half acres of land that is located just outside of San Diego, California. Mraz has explained that he stumbled upon the farm by accident when he was searching for a place to live among nature and decided to keep the crop going. His avocado trees are 25 to 30 years old and they produce 30,000 pounds of fruit each year. Mraz sells the avocados to locals and to the fast-casual Mexican grill, Chipotle.

Actor, Mark Ruffalo stays down to earth by living on a former dairy farm with his wife and children. Rufaflo’s farm has over 50 acres of land with a log house and a 150 year old barn. Rather than being seen running around Hollywood, Ruffalo prefers to ride around his farm on his collection of tractors. Ruffalo’s fields are filled with strawberries in one area, hay in another that is leased out and he envisions having livestock one day, lamb in particular. Since moving to his farm, Ruffalo has become an activist against fracking. His land sits upon one of the richest natural gas fields in the world and he is determined to not let drilling contaminate his children.

Actor, Hayden Christensen found himself contemplating about if he wanted to have a couple of thousand square feet or if he would prefer to have a couple of hundred acres. He went with the couple of hundred acres and purchased a 200-acre farm that is located north of Toronto. Christensen enjoys his farm getaway by riding on tractors, using excavators and by learning how to use other construction equipment. He also got himself two house pets names Buddy and Petunia, who are pot-bellied pigs. Christensen currently has an apple orchard on the farm and hopes to start a small vegetable garden.

Comedian and actress, Roseanne Barr owns a 46-acre macadamia nut farm that is located in Hawaii. Barr prides herself on maintaining a purely, organic macadamia nut farm and even created a reality television show about it called, Roseanne’s Nuts, that aired on Lifetime back in 2011. On the show, Barr addressed the issues of genetically modified foods and how Hawaii is ground zero for them. Barr has stated that farming is nothing new to her as she has always owned a farm somewhere. She used to own a farm in Iowa and besides working on her macadamia nut farm, she also raises bees.

Actress, Nicole Kidman and her country singer husband, Keith Urban reside in a 36-acre farm located near Leipers Fork, Tennessee, which is just 45 minutes outside of Nashville. The property houses deer and wild turkeys. The couple also owns a 110-acre cattle ranch in Australia that has four alpacas that the couple walks on leashes. The actress has stated that she loves living in Tennessee as she likes that it is far from Los Angeles and New York which makes her feel very protected there. Kidman enjoys tending to her vegetable garden and hosting a baby group once a week.

Funnyman, Zach Galifianakis calls his home Farmageddon, which is a 60-acre property located in North Carolina. Upon the 60-acre property sits a simple log cabin home that does not have any cell phone coverage.  There is also a newly built barn that Galifianakis hopes to house goats in one day. Farmageddon is a place where Galifanakis has said he is able to think clearly and pretend to know what he is doing. He also prefers farm life when compared to Hollywood life. He believes that there is more to life than being an actor and he does not want to adapt his life to that type of lifestyle.

The queen of homemaking herself, Martha Stewart, lives in Westchester County, New York on a 153-acre property that is known as Cantitoe Corners. Steward acquired the property in hopes to create a self-sustaining American farm. There are several different structures on the property, Stewart lives in the 1925 farmhouse that is known as the “Winter House”. The property also houses Stewart’s Friesen horses and donkeys that are from Canada. The innovative businesswoman built a greenhouse and an extensive vegetable garden. The landscaping on the property is exquisite with over 45,000 daffodil bulbs and over 3,000 new trees having been planted.

2. Russell Crowe

Actor, Russell Crowe has been busy expanding his farm since he purchased his first piece of land back in 2003, in Nana Glen, Australia for $750,000. The 500-acre ranch houses 700 Black Angus cattle as well as a chapel, which is where Crowe got married to his wife, Danielle Spencer. The property also has a full-sized night club that comes equipped with a stripper pole and dance floor and is said to sleep about 150 people.  Since then, Crowe has been expanding his ranch to include any land that he can purchase around him. He has recently purchased 988 acres for $5 million. Crowe told Late Night host, Jimmy Fallon, that his farm allows him to ease his mind and sort things out.

Media Mogul, Ted Turner holds the title of being the second largest individual landowner in North America. Turner owns two million acres of personal and ranch land. Fifteen of his ranches are located across the United States in Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and South Dakota. He also owns three ranches in Argentina.  Among his ranches, Turner manages over 51,000 bison. This makes the heard the largest private heard in the world. Turner prides himself on being environmentally responsible by managing his farms in a way that promotes ecological sustainability. Besides bison ranching, Turner uses his land for commercial hunting and fishing and for limited sustainable timber harvesting.
