Celebrities seem to have it all: a glamorous career, spacious homes, fast cars and all the luxury in the world. With all that money to spend, saving up for a child’s schooling doesn’t seem like a big challenge; however, some celebrities think otherwise.
Even though money is not an issue, there are celebrities who have simply chosen not to have children and to leave the baby-bump to others. Take a look at our list of celebrities that have chosen not to have children and the reasons behind their choices.
10. Portia De Rossi
Portia and her wife, Ellen DeGeneres, have been together since 2004 and got married in their Beverly Hills home in 2008. In 2013, Portia De Rossi told Out Magazine in an interview that she and DeGeneres were not planning to have children. She said, “The pressure is definitely there once you are in your mid-30s, but I asked myself whether I want children so I don’t miss out on something that other people seem to love or is it that I really want this with my whole heart?” The answer to these questions was clear to both De Rossi and DeGeneres. “I did not feel my response was ‘yes’ to the latter,” she says. De Rossi also said that married life is blissful and that the two are not only lovers, but also best friends.
9. Helen Mirren
In the 1980s, actress Helen Mirren lived with actor Liam Neeson, but eventually married American director Taylor Hackford in 1997 at the age of 52. Mirren says that she has never had maternal instinct whatsoever, but that she did doubt herself in her younger years. “I never wanted to have them, but I really tried to want them at one point. I was never able to convince myself and I just don’t have the urge to procreate. It is all fine by me and I never really cared about what others think. After all, there are far too many people in this world and this is my small contribution to ecology,” the actress says. Mirren says that even though she always knew it was not for her, she does love children.
8. Oprah Winfrey
Media mogul Oprah Winfrey is one of the most influential women in the world and has been together with Stedman Graham since 1986. The couple was engaged to be married in November 1992, but later decided to prefer a spiritual union rather than an official marriage. Winfrey says having children for the couple was never taken into account. “I never even thought I would have children. If I had children, they would probably hate me, because I am always working. They would have probably ended up on some talk show talking about me. If I would have children, they would suffer,” Winfrey says. Instead, she founded the Oprah Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa and considers the students as her daughters. “I have 152 daughters and expecting another 75 next year.”
7. Kim Cattrall
The Sex and the City-star has always had a reputation of the one who doesn’t seem to settle down completely, partly due to her role. Kim Cattrall said, “I asked myself some questions regarding having children and I realized much of the pressure comes from outside sources. That is when I realized I was not ready to take the step for motherhood.” Cattrall has been married three times between 1979 and 2004 and has been dating since. She adds, “I enjoy kids, but not for too long. First, I think they are funny and cute and then I usually get a headache.”
6. Jay Leno
Jay Leno has been married to his wife Mavis since 1980 and has never decided to have children, by mutual agreement. His wife told the LA Times in 2009, “I had made up my mind when I was little, so I had no agenda. I did not even plan to get married in the first place.” The couple enjoys their family of two, but say they love children and they have even written a children’s book, called If Roast Beef Could Fly.
5. Margaret Cho
American comedian and openly bisexual Margaret Cho says children don’t do anything for her. Cho said, “When I see children, I feel nothing. I have no maternal instinct, in fact, I probably ovulate just sand. My husband and I have seen some interesting personal ads of 50-year old who need care. Maybe we will adopt one of those…” Cho has been married to Al Ridenour since 2003 and said in an interview with Bond Magazine that they are a very normal couple, even though some might think the opposite. “We have a conventional marriage, but I know that people think we are such weird people that it must be impossible to have a conventional marriage,” she said.
4. Ashley Judd
Ashley Judd is known to be a humanitarian and says having children was never her priority. “I feel it is unconscionable to have children when there are so many children starving to death in impoverished countries worldwide. I think having children would simply be a selfish act,” she said. Her quotes have raised controversy, but Judd never felt pressured to go against her beliefs. The actress became engaged to racing driver Dario Franchitti in 1999 and got married to him in 2001. After a 12-year marriage, the couple announced to have mutually decided to end their marriage in 2013. Judd is a global ambassador for YouthAIDS, a prevention program which enabled Judd to travel to affected countries like Cambodia, Kenya and Rwanda.
3. Kathy Griffin
Comedian and actress Kathy Griffin says having children just did not seem like the right thing to do. “I want to give kids the rights they need. A prison sentence for a child molester is so incredibly low, yet kids are running the world in so many ways. Many people’s lives are about their children, but I don’t think the world is able to protect them enough and to give them the rights they need,” she said. Griffin got married in Hollywood in 2001, but divorced her husband in 2006, accusing him of stealing $72,000 from her. Since then, Griffin’s love life has been featured in the tabloids as she reportedly dated co-founder of Apple Steve Wozniak and NFL-player Isaiah Mustafa.
2. Cameron Diaz
In an interview with Parade Magazine, actress Cameron Diaz said, “I have an unbelievable life and I have this life because I don’t have children. I don’t think it’s a compromise to have children. It is more of a compromise to not have children, because it is a different choice you have to make.” Although Diaz says it is a choice, some tabloids say the 41-year old actress did not even have the opportunity to have children so far, as her relationships have not come close to settling down. Diaz cohabited with video-producer Carlos de la Torre from 1990 to 1994 and has dated several fellow celebrities since, including Matt Damon, Justin Timberlake and Jared Leto.
1. George Clooney
George Clooney is by far Hollywood’s most eligible bachelor, but is difficult to get a hold of for women. In interviews, Clooney has made it clear several times to not want to have children and that a second marriage is also out of the question. According to him, this was clear from the start. “I always knew fatherhood was not for me. Raising a child is a huge commitment and it has to be your top priority. My work is my priority and that is also why I will never marry again,” he said in an interview with Australia’s Daily Telegraph. From 1989 until 1993, Clooney was married to actress Talia Balsam and since his divorce, he has dated several women. Clooney’s love life is a major topic among female fans, who all fantasize about taking Clooney to the altar.
