In recent years we’ve seen a rise in conscientious eating being touted by some of the world’s biggest celebrities and wealthiest people. Lately, vegan eating has been upheld as an energy boosting, age defying lifestyle choice that benefits wellbeing and the environment. We can all think of a vegan celebrity with a slim figure, beautiful skin and seemingly boundless energy. And it makes us wonder: what on earth are they eating?
Well, wonder no more with our list of popular (and pricey) vegan hot spots frequented by famous plant-eaters the world over.
Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres: Crossroads, Los Angeles
It’s no secret that these two are huge animal lovers. Ellen and Portia are constantly giving interviews to talk about veganism and encourage others to adopt the lifestyle (at least in part). Portia has given cooking lessons on the Rachel Ray Show while Ellen invites world-renowned chefs like Fabio Vivani and Wolfgang Puck to cook up plant-based creations live on her show.
DeGeneres and de Rossi agree that weight loss and maintenance have been a huge benefit of their cruelty free diet, but they also love their lavish vegan meals out on the town in LA. For those special nights, the couple head to their favourite vegan eatery in Los Angeles, Crossroads.
This fine dining animal free celebrity hot spot is located in West Hollywood and caters to the likes of Beyoncé Knowles, Anne Hathaway and Natalie Portman. Headed by famed vegan chef, Tal Ronnen, Crossroads offers fresh foods, a sleek atmosphere and an enormous selection of cocktails. Crossroads features private fine dining experiences as well as a regular menu. Patrons can enjoy mouth watering Risotto Del Giorno paired with an $1800 bottle of Chateau Mouton Rothschild Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot and top it all off with a dairy free dark chocolate mousse for dessert. Be sure to give Ellen a wave while you’re there.
Russell Brand: Manna, Central London, UK
Comedian and movie star Russell Brand might be the last person one would expect to go vegan but the longtime vegetarian and yoga enthusiast has recently made the switch. Despite his rough style, bad behavior and callous attitude Brand is humanist, yogi and animal lover at heart. In fact, it’s this counter-Hollywood lifestyle that helps the successful man from Essex maintain his place on the world stage.
Though he spends much of his time in Los Angeles, Brand occasionally travels to London for work or play and sometimes even fashion week.
Whatever the reason for his visit, Brand gets himself a table at longtime vegan hideaway Manna, in Central London. This atmospheric and ethereal space has been visited by the likes of Mila Kunis, Chris Martin and Harry Styles. A multi functional service provider offering classes, cakes and events Manna owners Robin and Roger Swallow bring nourishment and delight to their celebrity guests along with fine champagne and a huge range of dairy defying desserts.
Tilda Swinton, Vitao, Central London, UK
This haunting and androgynous star, originally from London proper has been in some of Hollywood’s biggest movies and the indie film scenes greatest triumphs. An Oscar and Golden Globe winner, Swinton is typically in the news for escapades with her much younger paramour rather than her animal free diet. When she isn’t serving as muse to David Bowie Swinton is known to visit expanding London vegan hot spot, Vitao for a hearty serving of their plant-based delicacies.
Vitao has an ever changing menu but a consistent roster of A-list celebrities who make a point of visiting whenever they’re in town. Frequented by Woody Harrelson, Ellen Page, Stella McCartney and Keira Knightly the central London restaurant seeks to serve all and love all with fine food and great atmosphere.
Guests can get everything from vegan pub fare to elegant raw dishes to “ice cream” made in house. This hot spot is also expert in vegan coffees from lattes to cappuccinos, to keep Tilda ticking on those busy London days.
Joaquin Phoenix, Café Gratitude, Los Angeles
Not exactly seeking attention at the center of the Hollywood spotlight, Joaquin Phoenix is known for being incredibly talented and a longtime vegan. He became a plant eater at the tender age of 5 and hasn’t looked back since. The down to earth, media shy actor who recently starred in one of this year’s biggest films, Her, can often be seen seeking food, comfort and counsel at Café Gratitude in North Hollywood.
The LA based midday vegan retreat is not only lunch spot for celebrities, it’s an experience; a much needed retreat. Café Gratitude functions on an ideal of “Sacred Commerce” which values an energizing and inviting environment mixed with fresh healthy food served with you guessed it, gratitude.
Sounds flakey but don’t be fooled. Huge celebrities don’t just eat here. They eat here often. Among them: Alanis Morissette, Ellen Pompeo, Orlando Bloom, Jason Mraz (who is part owner) Ashton Kutcher, Jon Hamm and the cast of Mad Men. Along with their order patrons get to answer a question of the day like “what do you love about your life?” which despite its strangeness leads to an environment that has most celebrities from pro athletes to TV stars coming in on the daily. Recipes change often to but are always fresh, vegan and delicious, filling celebrities with extra gratitude for their already charmed lives.
Alec Baldwin, Pure Food and Wine, New York City
Unlike his hotheaded conservative character on 30 Rock, this handsome Hollywood veteran has toyed with veganism over the years. A thoughtful activist and outspoken liberal, Baldwin’s humanitarian attitude and Irish temper are what have endeared him to us over his three decades in show business. After meeting his Yoga Teacher wife, Hilaria, at Pure Food and Wine in New York City, Baldwin went all the way from vegetarian to vegan after getting the encouragement he needed to make the meat free switch for good. He credits his wife (and a vegan diet) with a 30 pound weight loss.
Pure Food and Wine is currently touted as one of the countries most celebrated vegan eateries and offers seasonal raw foods. The downtown restaurant is also no stranger to this kind of press. The menu at the downtown plant based hot spot has been featured a national magazines including Elle, In Style, New York Magazine and Forbes to name a few. Patrons can open their experience with a seasonal cocktail or sake available on tap and move on to enjoy a five course tasting menu complete with pairings selected by chef Sarma Melngailis. The private dining room and outdoor garden are often reserved for celebrity guests looking to enjoy plant-based five star meals in private. Ellen DeGeneres, Tom Brady and Bill Clinton are also counted among visitors to this chic and iconic cruelty free eatery. Still not interested in vegan food?
