Katy Perry has wowed the fashion world since she burst into the music industry in 2008 with her hit single “I Kissed a Girl”. Known for her outrageous costumes and wild red-carpet ensembles, fans get plenty of entertainment from the 29-year-old’s fashion choices on and off the stage. She told People magazine that she isn’t influenced by others, that she simply knows what looks good on her body.
Whether it’s bright blue hair, tiny jumpsuits, huge hair bows or goth-style gowns, she’s been there and done that. With an estimated net worth of $55 million and plenty of attention around the world, she’s been spotted wearing some of the world’s top haute couture. Dresses worn by Perry are worth as much as $100,000 and she’s also known to have a taste for extravagant accessories including diamond teeth “bling”.
This ultimate fashion risk-taker has recently announced her 2014 world tour to promote her latest album, “Prism”. We’re braced for another round of crazy costumes in the year ahead. In the meantime though, let’s take a look back through some of Katy Perry’s wildest get-ups to date. Before you buy your tickets to Katy Perry’s Prismatic tour (which could easily set you back $100 or more depending on the venue), take a moment to reflect on these top 10 eye-popping items and get a taste of what’s to come.
10. Indie Rocker – $500+
Attending the 2012 Coachella after party in Palm Springs, Katy Perry changed her usual style to suit the occasion and stepped out in dark colors. She was said to have partied the night away with fellow pop star and close friend Rihanna. Coachella is a popular music festival and in 2012 headline acts included Snoop Lion (Snoop Dogg), The Black Keys and Radiohead. Perry’s dress, by Wildfox Couture White Label, cost about $400. Her House of Holland for Pretty Polly tights were just $25 and her T.U.K. A7270 Creeper shoes about $65. Ahead of the event, the singer tweeted: “Pretty stoked about my 90’s The Craft meets Garbage meets Tank Girl meets early No Doubt meets Ty from Clueless lewk 4 dis wknd #ohmygoth.” She topped off the outfit with purple hair, which was thanks to her LA hairstylist Rick Henry.
9. Teenage Dream –$500
At the 2010 Teen Choice Awards, Katy Perry dressed up as none other than her alter ego, the teenage Kathy Beth Terry. Kathy was the star of Perry’s music video “Last Friday Night T.G.I.F”. Wearing a pink turtleneck sweater, denim overalls, large glasses and braces on her teeth, Perry 100% pulled off the Teenage Dream look she was aiming for. The price of this costume is a closely-guarded secret, however, it’s likely that individual items cost up to $100. To this day, Perry is accustomed to rocking this preppy, teenage look every now and then. Just before Christmas she was spotted with boyfriend John Mayer in glasses and old-school clothes.
8. Cleavage & Color – 9 Million Viewers
Back when she had recently married now ex-hubby Russell Brand, the “California Gurl” singer stepped on stage to perform at the 2010 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in New York City. The event had nine million TV viewers worldwide. This was the year that a $2 million diamond-encrusted bra hit the cat walk. Katy wore three different outfits, all colorful and custom-made, with an estimated price tag of over $1,000 each. She was said to have given the lingerie models a run for their money, baring plenty of cleavage. There was a hot pink ensemble, which featured a skin-tight skirt and a colorful, flowery corset. There was also a purple leotard with a long train, multi-colored heels and a wild headdress. To end the evening, she wore a bright yellow PVC dress (which was in the style of a paper cut-out doll) and black knee-high boots.
7. Holey Moley – $1,500+ Outfit
In 2009, Katy wore 12 different costumes – all somewhat outrageous – at the MTV Europe Music Awards. One of these was a puffy red ball gown, which had netting and big bullet holes in the skirt. Part of Viktor & Rolf’s Spring 2010 collection, it hadn’t long been off the runways before Perry selected it as the next of her weird yet wonderful outfits. It is feminine yet surreal and edgy. The inspiration behind the dress, which retailed for over $1,500, was reportedly the recession. Rolf was quoted as saying that with the credit crunch and people cutting back their spending, they decided to cut holes in the ball gowns.
6. Gothic Goddess – $5,000 Gown
Stepping onto the red carpet at the 2012 Much Music Video Awards in Toronto, Perry was a mixture between an Addams Family character and a wild Amazonian queen. She wore a sheer black skirt over a short skirt, with gold decoration on her top half. Her hair was a dark shade of purple. The dress was from Canadian fashion label, VAWK, as part of its 2012 resort collection. Designer Sunny Fong creates gowns such as the one Perry wore for about $5,000. Also that night, the pop star performed her hit song “Wide Awake” live and wore an outrageous butterfly dress.
5. Plunging Neckline – $5,500 Gown
Perry was one of few celebs who ignored advice ahead of the 2013 Grammys which asked attendees to “tone down” the revealing nature of outfits. Another celebrity singer who went all out despite the warning was Jennifer Lopez. Perry walked the red carpet in a mint green, full-length Gucci dress, with a big front keyhole revealing a whole lot more than just her neckline. Despite showing off her curvy assets, this may not have been the pop star’s most outrageous outfit ever. However, it sure was outrageous considering that memo! The dress has a floral neckline with colored topaz crystals, and it was available for purchase at the time on Gucci’s website for $5,500.
4. The Blues – $10,000 Outfit
Following her divorce from Russell Brand (who is now expected to be on the verge of proposing to Jemima Khan), Perry’s blue mood resulted in her dying her hair blue. She added to it even further by matching the hair with blue clothes. At Paris Fashion Week in 2012 one of her outfits was a Viktor & Rolf royal blue trench coat (thought to cost over $1,000), coupled with bright blue heels and a black and blue Viktor & Rolf dress. The dress was likely to cost $1,500 or more judging by standard Viktor & Rolf prices. She even carried a white and blue pill style bag by Christian Louboutin (price $7,000).
3. Polka Dot Pinup – $100 to $10,000+
In the “I Kissed a Girl” days, Katy starred on The Today Show wearing a custom-made red and black polka-dot jumpsuit with a black bow around the waist, and a head full of curls. Designed by Julie Mollo, who sells dresses online for prices of about $100 and less, this outfit was fun, flirty and synonymous with her earliest looks. The black bow belt in this outfit had a price tag of just $25. This isn’t the only time Katy has rocked bold polka dots. At the 2013 American Music Awards last November, she strutted up the red carpet in a polka-dot, strapless gown from Oscar de la Renta’s Spring 2014 collection. His made to order dresses can take over 400 hours to make, and can cost well over $10,000 each. She also proudly wore a polka dot manicure with the dress, thanks to celebrity manicurist Kimmie Kyees and Sally Hansen nail color.
2. Teeth Bling & Leopard Skin – $10,000+
At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards in New York City, the pop star didn’t just wear a tight-fitting, loud leopard print dress with embroidered gold butterflies. She also stepped out with a diamond set of grills on her upper teeth. That’s right – she had a rainbow colored grill covering up her pearly whites and it spelt out “Roar”, the name of one of her hit singles. Worth about $1,000 this mouth piece was reportedly designed by celebrity jewelry designer Paul (The Ice Man) Wall. Diamond encrusted grills can easily cost $10,000 and more. The slinky leopard print dress was part of French designer Emanuel Ungaro’s Fall 2013 collection. It’s no longer available to purchase but Ungaro’s dresses tend to cost up to $10,000 a piece.
1. Musical Couture- Up to $100,000
Perry walked the 56th Grammy Awards red carpet in this edgy yet fashionable Valentino dress. She’s literally wearing her love for music on her sleeve here. The sheer dress includes a full skirt that is printed with music notes, clefs and staffs. The Roar singer said the dress was a “musical dress for music’s biggest night”. The dress actually came straight off the cat walk a few days earlier, which shows she has friends up high. It’s part of the Valentino Spring/Summer 2014 collection. Couture houses like Valentino keep dress prices a closely guarded secret, but with some pieces taking more than 500 hours to create, the price tag can easily reach $100,000 or more.
