Now that the dust has settled, can we discuss everyone talking about Kim Kardashian’s nude selfie? I know, guys. Why are we even talking about this? It’s a freaking selfie from Kim Kardashian. Doesn’t she post selfies every day? Isn’t that essentially her job? Yes and, more or less, yes.
The reason it’s worthy of being talked about isn’t because of the selfie itself, but rather because of the reactions it elicited from other celebrities. Who knew posting a selfie with a lot of skin showing would have celebrities feeling such strong feelings that they took to Twitter to unleash all their thoughts about Kim K’s curves? Furthermore, the debate snowballed into a discussion about whether one has the right to show their body in whatever way they please and if one should receive criticism for, you know, posting a nude photo to their 62 million Instagram followers.
On top of the privacy and criticism debate, the conversation turned into one of sexism, as people wondered why Kim was being condemned, but when famous men show their bodies in such a way, they are celebrated. Whether you hate or love Kim, one thing is for sure, this got people’s panties in a bunch. Everyone from Oscar-nominees to TV stars to pop stars had opinions about Kim’s selfie. So, here’s a rundown of what 12 celebrities had to say about her racy selfie.
12. Bette Midler – Swallow The Camera
We should start with one of the negative reactions to Kim’s naked selfie since these were the reactions that set Twitter ablaze with rebuttals. It appears that even someone nominated for two Oscars isn’t above commenting on Kim’s photo. That someone is Bette Midler (70) who appeared in such films a Beaches and, everyone’s favorite Halloween movie, Hocus Pocus.
Midler jumped into the Twitter game by tweeting, “Kim Kardashian tweeted a nude selfie today. If Kim wants us to see a part of her we’ve never seen, she’s gonna have to swallow the camera.” Damn, Bette, that’s cold.
Kim responded by asking Midler to send nudes if she’s still up since it’s past her bedtime. She ended the tweet with #justkidding. If we’re all calling people out for slut shaming, why isn’t anyone calling Kim out for age shaming?
Kim followed up by saying that apparently Midler had sent her a gift awhile back and that she was trying to be a fake friend. Midler finished up the exchange by stating that while everyone can take a selfie, not everyone can take a joke. While the exchange was laced with insults and passive aggressive comments, it wasn’t outright mean like some of the other exchanged prompted by Kim’s selfie.
11. Ariel Winter – What About Bieber?
Ariel Winter (18) is an actress most well-known for portraying the role of Alex Dunphy on Modern Family. She may be young but she is no stranger to criticism related to her womanly figure, which may be why she stood up for Kim. At only 15 years old, Winter was 5’1” wearing a F-cup bra, which caused her tiny body physical pain. She underwent breast reduction surgery to go from a 32F to a 32D. Because of her breast size, Winter had dealt with scrutiny about her figure for a while before having the surgery, but even after the surgery, she had to give interviews on the topic leading to even more articles being written about her figure.
In response to Kim being criticized for her body, Winter tweeted, “No one was body shaming @justinbieber when he posted his nude guitar so why @KimKardashian? #herbodyherchoice #InternationalWomensDay”
She went on to say that women should be able to do what they want with their bodies without facing criticism. Surely, her personal history may play into this opinion but either way, it’s nice to see someone question the issue of genders and sexuality when it comes to Kim’s nude selfie.
10. Abigail Breslin – Sl*t Shaming Isn’t Chill Ever
Abigail Breslin is another Oscar nominee getting into the Kim K debate. In 2006, Breslin became one of the most lovable child film stars with Little Miss Sunshine, for which she was later nominated for an Oscar. She went on to star in Definitely, Maybe and My Sister’s Keeper. Breslin accomplished something difficult for child stars – she made the transition to be an adult star. Breslin appeared as Chanel #5 in Scream Queens and is set to come back for its second season.
Breslin simply tweeted, “Slut shaming isn’t chill ever,” which, oddly enough, seems like something Chanel #5 would possibly tweet too. She went on to say that telling a woman the way in which she should show her body is extremely misguided and that it’s unfair to condone some and condemn others. While she is touching onto what Winter said, she didn’t call out another celebrity’s ability to post nude photos without backlash the way Winter did.
9. Demi Lovato – Different Things Empower Different Women
Demi Lovato has been vocal about her own struggles with an eating disorder. Since undergoing treatment for her issues in 2010, Lovato has been all about the self-love. On her Instagram, she’ll often post #NMM photos, the hashtag standing for No Makeup Monday.
She took to her Instagram account to post a photo reading: “Nudity empowers some. Modesty empowers some. Different things empower different women and it’s not your place to tell her which one it is.”
This was, perhaps, the most diplomatic response to Kim’s selfie. Demi was not only giving praise to Kim’s nudity, but also helped those who feel empowered by modesty.
8. Pink – Not Down With Kim’s Selfie
Pink has been a pop star for quite some time now. Her debut solo album, Can’t Take Me Home, was release in 2000. On the album was two Billboard Hot 100 top-ten songs: “There You Go” and “Most Girls”. She’s been cranking out hits since with songs like “Get the Party Started”, “Don’t Let Me Get Me”, “Just Like a Pill”, and “Raise Your Glass”.
Pink was not down with Kim’s selfie at all. She tweeted a picture of her long response on Twitter. In this lengthy post, she shouted out to all the women using their brains and work ethic. In praising these women, who may not receive the same attention or money, she stated, “In the quiet moments, you will feel something deeper than fleeting excitement resulting from attention, you will feel something called pride and self respect.”
Alright, Pink, not into seeing Kim’s bare bod. Maybe she’ll write a song about it!
7. Amber Rose – Not Down With Pink, Not Being Down With Kim’s Selfie
Amber Rose is most well known for dating Kanye West, aka Kim Kardashian’s husband. Because of this, the media has reported about an ongoing feud between Kim and Rose. Rose was formally a stripper but now considers herself to be a feminist activist and even organized Amber Rose’s Slut Walk, which took place in 2015 in LA.
Considering that Rose is basically an activist against slut shaming, she did not like some of the reactions to Kim’s self, in particular Pink’s. She posted Pink’s photo with a lengthy comment that defends Kim, as she is a grown mother of two and if she feel comfortable showing her body, then more power to her. She goes on to tell Pink that if she’d personally like to mentor young girls in school and tell them not to use their bodies to get ahead, she should do so but when it comes to Kim, Pink should leave her alone as she’s a grown woman and can do whatever she likes. Fair enough.
Rose further goes on to state that everyone has seen Pink very close to naked swinging from a rope, so what’s the difference? Since Pink has a “talent” her nudity is classy but Kim’s isn’t?
Rose went even further on her comparison and asked why she is shamed for her stripper past but Beyonce is just as nude and praised for it. The Beehive didn’t take too kindly to Rose calling out and comparing herself to their queen.
6. Emily Ratajkowski – Sexist Bullsh*t
Emily Ratajkowski is no stranger to showing some skin. Have you seen Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” video or her appearance in Gone Girl? Let’s just say, some skin is shown. While Ratajkowski is undoubtedly a sex symbol, she is also very verbal about feminism and a woman’s right to sexuality, as well as a supporter of Planned Parenthood.
In response to Kim’s selfie, the 24-year-old tweeted: “Love when a man comments on a woman’s decision to post a nude photo. Her body, her career. Sexist bullsh*t. @KimKardashian”
Ratajkowski went on to tweet again and urge women to read her Lenny Letter about sexuality in our culture. In this piece, she talks candidly about growing up with her D-cup breasts and how sexualized women are in our culture.
She added one last tweet on the subject matter in which she said she loved (obvious sarcasm) that when Kim stood up for herself via Twitter, everyone thought that it was Kanye, a man, who had done it.
5. Piers Morgan – Uh, You Shared That Picture With 41 Million People
Piers Morgan, the television personality and journalist, didn’t think that this was a sexist issue at all. He tweeted: “I like @KimKardashian but if you blast out naked selfies to 41 million strangers, they’re perfectly entitled to comment. Men AND women.”
Basically, Piers thinks that if Kim is going to share her body in such a public display, commenting on it is valid and not sexist. While some celebrities on this list would disagree with Morgan, he does have a point that Kim did share the photo with 41 million people – 41 million people! I think some of my friends on Facebook overshare sometimes with their photos and they’re only friends with a thousand or so people. He also commended Pink on her lengthy post.
4. Christina Milian – Love Yourself
Remember Christina Milian? She gave us such hits as “AM to PM” and “Dip It Low”. She even appeared in a few feature films including Love Don’t Cost a Thing, Be Cool, and Ghosts of Girlfriend’s Past. Wonder where she disappeared to? In 2009, she married songwriter The Dream, who is responsible for such hits as “Me Against the Music”, “Umbrella”, and “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”. Basically, if you had a song stuck in your head, it was her husband’s fault. She gave birth to their first child in February 2010 but, unfortunately, the couple divorce in July 2010.
She may have had the most laid-back response to Kim’s selfie by tweeting ‘love yourself’ with the heart eyed emoji. No one can really argue with the fact that everyone should love themselves. She managed to support Kim without calling out anyone for “slut shaming.” Way to be a class act, Christina Milian. Now, come back and make us more songs like “Dip It Low”. Thanks.
3. Chloe Grace Moretz – What About Goals For Young Women?
Chloe Grace Moretz was a cute child actor, who grew up to be a gorgeous woman that is still a fantastic actor. She’s starred in such films as (500) Days of Summer, Kick-Ass, and Carrie. She’s also set to star in the upcoming Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. You’d think all this acting would keep her busy, but the actress still found time to comment on Kim’s selfie, tweeting to Kim, “”I truly hope you realize how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them we have so much more to offer than our bodies.”
Kim didn’t take that sitting down. She tweeted back: “Let’s all welcome @ChloeGMoretz to twitter, since no one knows who she is. your nylon cover is cute boo.” Bam! Alright, Kim, with the comeback.
Moretz’s original tweet was the match that caused the fire. It was following this tweet that many of the previously listed celebrities commented on the subject. A few celebrities even tweeted back at Moretz, including the final two on this list.
2. John Leguizamo – Moretz Is A Real Talent
John Leguizamo is probably a name you don’t immediately recognize but he has a face you’d certainly recognize in a ‘hey, what else is that guy in?’ way. He’s been around for a while but most notably he played the role of Tybalt in Romeo + Juliet, as well as appearing in Moulin Rouge!, John Wick, and Sisters. He’s also done a ton of voicework for films in the Ice Age franchise. He was even nominated for a Golden Globe in 1996 for his supporting role in To Wong Foo Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar. So, the guy is a pretty talented character actor.
Being all about that talent, he tweeted: “@ChloeGMoretz you are real talent and women respect you. Don’t sweat #KimKardashian shade.” Perhaps, it was not outright throwing shade at Kim for being talentless in the traditional sense but it was certainly implied. I am sure Chloe appreciated the support.
1. Bella Thorne – Every Woman Should Make Her Own Choices
The 18-year-old actress, Belle Thorne, who has appeared in such films as The Duff and Blended, accidentally got into the middle of the selfie drama. While hosting a #askbella Q&A on Twitter, a fan asked her what she thought about Kim’s selfie. Thorne responded with, “@chloemoretz_ @KimKardashian I think every woman should be allowed to make their own choices with their OWN bodies soo..” That tweet was followed by another reading, “@chloemoretz_ @KimKardashian -and it’s not our place to tell them what they can and can’t do with their body.. #internationalwomensday.” Her alligence with the Kardashian family shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, as she is a close friend with Kylie Jenner, the youngest of the family.
At least one thing is for sure, if you’re going to share a photo like that, people are going to probably talk. These were 12 of the biggest reactions of celebrities to Kim’s latest expose shot, something tells me this won’t be the last time.
