When it comes to upcoming films in 2016, there might not be a genre that has more momentum going for it than superhero films. They’ve proven to be huge draws at the box office, and are starting to attract some of the biggest names in show business. Considering the fact that most superhero movies are multi-year deals, you can expect this trend to not go away anytime soon.
What may be a breath of fresh air is DC’s upcoming attempt at finding a winner with Suicide Squad which comes out in August. Suicide Squad has not been without its share of doubters, but the latest trailer has left fans feeling more pumped for this film than any other one coming out this year.
It’s easy to see why. The trailer is pumped full of fun, it’s set to “Bohemian Rhapsody” and it shows a lot of fun without giving away too much of the plot. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t still things that we are going to be able to dissect however!
Here are 10 takeaways to keep in mind when you check out the latest trailer for Suicide Squad. And if you haven’t yet seen it, check it out!
10. What Messed With The Train?!
For all the things that people know about Suicide Squad, one thing they are not clear on is the overall villain for the film. The trailer started to give a hint towards that as they showed a train get absolutely mauled by some form of tentacle-wielding badass. While right now it can only be speculation on who it is, it is surely someone (or something) that is going to put up quite a fight. Good thing that the Suicide Squad is not exactly light on firepower!
9. Harley Quinn May Be The Lead
As big a deal has been made for The Joker, and now Deadshot after this last trailer, there may not be a more appealing character than Harley Quinn. Quinn was a huge part of the first trailer and promotional campaign, and she steals the show this time around. With jokes being at the forefront of the character in all the trailers, Quinn will have the ability to make us laugh before doing something absolutely psychotic. When you combine it with what may be an origin story for Quinn, and you start to see a chance for Margot Robbie to really knock the role out of the park.
8. Pulling Harley From An Acid Bath?
One of the most iconic shots of the trailer comes when you see The Joker embracing Harley in what appears to be a vat of acid (true romance!). The shot is not only beautifully shot, but it also may indicate an origin story for both The Joker and Harley. For those uninformed, Harley’s white skin is bleached after she is put into the acid by the Joker. While we don’t know to what extent this storyline will be told, the fact that there are already hints towards it is incredibly exciting.
7. The Expansion Of Deadshot
Deadshot is one of the coolest villains in the Suicide Squad that you may not know a lot about. A trained assassin, there is no doubting that his ability to be handy around guns will become paramount. Guns, bullets and overall action flies throughout the trailer and Deadshot is at the focal point of most of it. The fact that the character is played by Will Smith may lead to more screen time in contrast to some of the lesser known actors. The trailer also includes a shot of what appears to be the cybernetic eye attachment, that helps increase Deadshot’s accuracy.
6. Alex Ross’ Joker Outfit
One of the most talented comic book writers/artists is Alex Ross. Ross specializes in interiors, covers as well as design work. While he has been active since 1994, it was one of his most iconic creations that got honored in the last trailer. The Joker looks menacing (and fantastic) at one point in the trailer where he is seen in the iconic outfit that was created by Ross. Given the backlash towards the original images of Leto, having the character be outfitted in something as iconic as that was a great start.
5. Joker Has Goons!
While we don’t know the extent, there was definitely a quick second in the trailer where The Joker is surrounded by some of his goons (meanwhile he’s shoving a gun in someone’s face). This can be great news, given that The Joker can be at his very best when given the opportunity to order people around. While the Joker is menacing, the fact that his buddies have masks over their faces with fake exaggerated grins, helps make them all the more menacing as well. Talk about not being able to pick out what is going to give you nightmares.
4. Joker Doesn’t Have The Damaged Tattoo?
One of the best shots of the trailer involves Joker lying on the ground, surrounded by weapons and laughing manically. One thing that astute observers are pointing out is that there is no “damaged” tattoo on his forehead. The hope is that either this is a flashback, or that there is a scene in which The Joker loses his tattoos. At least if the movie shows him getting “damaged” tattooed onto himself, then maybe they can help make it seem like less of a joke.
3. Humor Is At The Forefront
One of the biggest takeaways from the trailer is just how much fun the movie seems like it may be. There is humor peppered throughout the movie and helps give a throwback to the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy which managed to perfectly blend humor and action. One of the best things about films can be when they don’t take themselves too seriously, and given how over the top the characters in Suicide Squad are, it’s great that the filmmaker recognized that. The Joker is terrifying, but that doesn’t mean he also can’t make you laugh once in a while!
2. El Diablo’s Powers Look Sweet
One thing that people are really not sold on, was the overall look of the film when the images first came out. When you look at El Diablo, it’s a little easy to see why, as the character is heavily tattooed all over in a ridiculous fashion. Yet fans of the comic would know the fire-wielding power of El Diablo, and now, so do the fans. El Diablo is seen throughout the trailer while throwing fire and creating mayhem along the way.
1. “To Do Something That Will Get You Killed”
Viola Davis is one of the biggest stars attached to the project, and she will be outstanding as Amanda Waller. This trailer gave us the first real look at the character as she mentions that she needs to get together a team of criminals for a mission. Another character says through a voice over that the mission is to send the team to go and “do something that will get you killed.” An innocent throwaway line in most movies, but it will be interesting to see if the Suicide Squad knocks off some of its numerous team members. At the very least a line like that means you know the characters aren’t exactly going for a tea party.
