Concerts are meant to entertain, which is why artists take several months preparing to ensure a perfect show. After all, they would be hosting tens of thousands of people who have spent their hard earned cash to watch the artist perform. It takes a lot of planning to ensure that everything is synchronized, from the backup singers, dancers, musicians, lights personnel and other effects people.
Sometimes, however, even the best-laid plans can go wrong. From simple mis-steps to outright tragedies, here are the top 10 biggest concert mishaps.
10. Britney Spears
After hitting it big in the latter part of the 1990’s just a few years removed from her days in “The Mickey Mouse Club,” Spears hit a rough patch. Though her albums were still selling extremely well, her personal problems forced her to go on a brief hiatus. She had been making headlines for the wrong reasons, including a divorce, losing custody of her kids, and a dazed performance during the 2007 Video Music Awards. Musically, she never really lost her touch as her albums were still huge sellers. In 2009, in the midst of a comeback, she staged a concert in Sacramento. Unfortunately, she got confused and instead made a shout out to the people of San Jose. Oops, she did it again.
9. Selena Gomez
In June 2013, Selena Gomez was performing in a concert in Boston. She was showing off her moves that went along with her songs, dancing energetically in one number. The cut on the front of the dress was a little too long however, and her moves exposed a flesh colored Spanx. The wardrobe malfunction further brought excitement to her fans. For a lot of guys however, it was no malfunction at all.
Miguel is an R & B singer who has released two critically acclaimed albums, the 2010 All I Want is You and the 2012 Kaleidoscope Dream. It was enough to merit him an invitation to not just appear, but also to perform in the Billboard Music Awards. Miguel gave a vigorous rendition of his song entitled “Adorn.” Rather than focus on the song, he made several acrobatic moves, leaping across the stage. He missed the stage however and his legs ended up adorning a couple of fans at the front. The two fans got injured, with one complaining that she was not even attended to by the organizers afterwards. As for Miguel, well, the show had to go on and he was able to complete his performance.
7. Justin Bieber
He is so young, yet so successful. Justin Bieber already has five number one albums and he has not even finished his teen years yet. No other artist has done that before. Though he has had his share of controversies, Bieber is also not missing out on his youth. He dated a fellow celebrity Selena Gomez and overcame the breakup just like any other teenager. He also still drinks milk regularly, as it is essential for growing up. Unfortunately, he drank one just before a concert in Phoenix. He ended up throwing up the milk in the middle of his concert performance while on stage.
6. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga is one of the most colorful artists and musicians we have had in a long time. However, she is not all style and bluster, as her songs and albums have all received critical acclaim to go with its commercial success. Her concerts are much-awaited events by her diehard fans called the “little monsters.” While in a concert in New Zealand however, the singer got struck right on the head after a dancer lost his grip on a large metal pole. She was able to brush off the incident and continue without showing any pain. In other words, she kept her poker face.
5. Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez is all about glamour and sexiness. Every inch of her body and every wardrobe she wears shout out the meaning of fashion. She makes sure that her songs complement her style, even recording one entitled “Louboutins.” Lopez sang the song during the American Music Awards in 2009. She fell when a choreographed jump ended up incorrectly. Like a true performer, she picked herself up to finish the song.
Beyonce has got the face, the body, the booty and the voice. She can sing and she can dance. She was a member of one of the most successful female groups of all time, became one of the most successful solo artists of all time, then married one of the most successful rapper and hip hop artists of all time. It is as if she could do nothing wrong. That is, until one unfortunate incident during a concert. While performing one of her chart-topping dance hits, Beyonce lost her footing while walking down a flight of stairs. She not only belly flopped, but she also landed with her face planted on the floor. However, she’s a survivor, so she easily shook off the incident with only a slightly hurt pride and maybe some bruises on her face.
3. Woodstock 1999
It was supposed to be the 30th year celebration of the original Woodstock that culminated the era of peace, love and flower power. Instead, it turned into an all-out mayhem. During the performance of Limp Bizkit, fans went wild and started burning plastic bottles and wooden panels. There were four reported cases of rape, including a woman who was pulled down into a mosh pit while bodysurfing. It continued the following day during the set of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was the day the music died.
2. The Who
The Who was scheduled to perform in Cincinnati, but it took the organizers a long time to open the gates. When it finally opened, 8,000 fans stampeded into the grounds, killing 11 people. Even worse, the show went on because the band members were not informed. A visibly upset Roger Daltrey wanted to cancel the rest of the tour, but was prevailed upon by Pete Townshend to continue.
1. Altamont Speedway Free Festival
It was a disaster waiting to happen. Billed as Woodstock West, this 1969 concert in California featured artists like Santana, Tina Turner and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. For some reason, the Hell’s Angels were hired to provide security to the Rolling Stones. The crowd of 300,000 was already becoming unruly, prompting the Grateful Dead, which were one of the prime organizers, to cancel its appearance. A scuffle broke out between the audience and the Hell’s Angels. One of the members of the crowd, Meredith Hunter, was high on methamphetamine and took out a revolver, forcing one of the Hell’s Angel to stab him. After a trial in 1971, the jury acquitted the Hell’s Angel, which they found to have acted in self-defense.
