Sons of Anarchy was a very popular crime drama that began in 2008 and ran on FX. The story followed a motorcycle club and all of their exploits, which included running drugs, getting arrested, overdosing on drugs, and big moral dilemmas. Sons was set in the imaginary town of Charming in California’s Central Valley; the violent and bloody show was based loosely on Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
The show lasted seven brutal seasons; it was created by Kurt Sutter, a writer, director and producer who is responsible for the Bastard Executioner, Southpaw, and the Shield. Sons of Anarchy drew in millions of viewers, making it the most watched, highest rated series ever to appear on FX’s lineup. The tearful ending brought about the ruin of the main character, Jax; his fate was to follow too closely in his father’s footsteps to an early grave. The raw, edgy drama drew us all in and still has yet to let us go.
The show wrapped for good in 2014, leaving some fans feeling a little lost. The show had a tremendous impact globally. The Sons of Anarchy crew have been whispering about a prequel to the show to air on FX, possibly about Jax’s father, that Sutter is attempting to put together. With rumors of a new season, it got us wondering where all those Sons stars are now. Here are some updates on what all of our favorite bikers have been doing since they packed up their leather jackets and bikes in 2014.
10. Charlie Hunnam – Jackson ‘Jax’ Teller
Charlie Hunnam is no longer playing Jax, but he is rumored to be rehashing another old role of his, returning for the sequel of Pacific Rim. More giant robot fights! In 2017, he will also be starring as King Arthur in a new Camelot movie, currently in post production. There have been some rumors of a Sons prequel, but there are few details available yet. The sexy actor has been seen on the glossy pages of magazines in a new, incredibly hot modeling gig for Calvin Klein’s new fragrance in March 2016. The actor and his longtime girlfriend, Morgana McNelis, recently bought a house together in L.A., making everyone wonder if there will soon be wedding bells for the couple. Lucky gal!
9. Katey Sagal – Gemma Teller Morrow
Katey Sagal had quite the comedy career before Sons of Anarchy began shooting. She was Peggy Bundy on Married with Children and voiced Leela from the hilarious animated show Futurama. But the actress changed gears to play Gemma in Sons of Anarchy, and it has shifted the trajectory of her career. From funny lady to serious actress, she has shown how talented she is by taking on such different roles. Along with Sons, she appears in an another of her husband Kurt Sutter’s shows, The Bastard Executioner, as a Slavic woman with visions. The show takes place during the reign of King Edward the first, who ruled England from 1239 to 1307. Look for her in her upcoming role in Bleed for This, a movie adaption of World Champion Boxer Vinny Pazienza’s career, in 2016.
8. Mark Boone Junior – Robert ‘Bobby Elvis’ Munson
Mark Boone Junior has been quite busy since Sons of Anarchy! Just in 2016 alone, he has ten movies either filming or in post production. Included in those is a thriller By the Rivers of Babylon, a horror movie Ghost House, and a cerebral revenge movie called Let Me Make You A Martyr. Boone had quite a career before Sons as well; he’s known for his roles in Batman Begins and Memento. Boone has shown up in dozens of movies and TV shows since the beginning of his career 30 years ago. He says that the best part about working on Sons of Anarchy is the fans; to this day, he still travels with the express purpose of seeing his fans and making another appearance as Bobby. How sweet!
7. Kim Coates – Alexander ‘Tig’ Trager
The character that Kim Coates plays in Sons of Anarchy, Tig, is the pinnacle of tough, violent and brutal. However, Coates seems to be the exact opposite of his character from the show in real life. Like many of the actors from the show, Coates does quite a bit of charity work and meet-the-fans events. For example, in March of 2016, Coates and his previous co-star Mark Boone Junior met up for a motorcycle ride in Daytona Beach. Coates also has quite a few acting projects in the works as well; he is working on the action comedy The True Memoirs of an International Assassin, which is currently filming for Netflix, and a post-production drama with Holly Hunter called Strange Weather.
6. Tommy Flanagan – Filip ‘Chibs’ Telford
Tommy Flanagan, or Chibs as Sons of Anarchy fans know him, is quite the character actor. From his illegal arms dealing Malcolm Black character in the hit series Revenge to Tom the Knife in Gotham, the man who kidnaps and threatens Bruce Wayne, Flanagan plays a perfect bad guy. We just love to hate this guy! Rumor has it the actor will be appearing in the second Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which is currently filming and is set to be released in 2017. The trademark scar Flanagan has on his face makes him the perfect villain or tough guy; Tommy says he got the scar during a knife fight while he was a DJ in Scotland. Now-a-days, the actor is all family man; he’s absolutely taken with his little girl. He claims he’s a “hermit” who stays inside all day with his family. That is so adorable!
5. Theo Rossi – Juan Carlos ‘Juice’ Ortiz
Theo Rossi, who played Juice on Sons, has been in the news lately, but not for his acting. The actor has been hard at work promoting causes that are really important to him. Rossi, an animal lover and owner of three rescue pups himself, is a big supporter of The Humane Society and recently spoke at their To The Rescue Gala. He also launched a new hashtag sensation on twitter, #Righttobeme, to promote the acceptance and happiness of those with mental and intellectual disorders. The Sons actor is hard at work on screen too, filming the Marvel Netflix original Luke Cage as Shades, the criminal counterpoint to the convict-turned-hero. Look for the incredibly busy Rossi also in the thriller When the Bough Breaks and the drama Low Riders in 2016.
4. Ryan Hurst – Harry ‘Opie’ Winston
Ryan Hurst may not look like it, but the six-foot-four-inch tall actor is big into yoga and designing costumes and tattoos. The actor, who helped design some of his tattoos for Sons of Anarchy, also helped to design his character’s ink from his WGN show Outsiders. The action show features Hurst playing a rustic warrior fighting to keep his outsider traditions against a corporation trying to run his family from their mountain home. Ryan Hurst is also playing a part in the horror TV series Bates Motel. Hurst, who has been acting for nearly 20 years, is also known for his parts in Saving Private Ryan and Remember the Titans.
3. Maggie Siff – Dr. Tara Knowles
Maggie Siff, who played Dr. Knowles, has been acting quite a bit since Sons’ finale, showing up in Mad Men as well as the Showtime hit Billions. Siff also appeared in the recent sci-fi thriller, the 5th Wave. This busy actress is also starring in an up and coming comedy drama called The Sweet Life alongside the beautiful Abigail Spencer. The movie is about two people who fall in love and decide to commit suicide together by jumping off of the Golden Gate Bridge. Her roles have been mostly on the small screen, but that doesn’t matter to the 42-year-old mom. Siff says she has been enjoying the half-year schedule of TV; it leaves her more time for theater and independent films.
2. Ron Perlman – Clarence ‘Clay’ Morrow
Ron Perlman is an actor that needs no introduction; the classically trained actor is always busy filming so new project with no signs of slowing down, luckily for us! Perlman has been acting since the early 1980s, appearing in such movies as Blade 2, Hellboy, and Enemy at the Gates Although the actor has been working for years to get a stab at creating Hellboy 3, Perlman admits that the story is caught in a maelstrom of development problems. However, he’s had plenty to keep him busy, from his voice acting on Adventure Time to the Harry Potter spinoff movie Magical Beasts and Where to Find Them to a boxing movie about Chuck Wepner called The Bleeder.
1. Drea de Matteo – Wendy Case
Famous for her roles on Shades of Blue, the Sopranos, and Desperate Housewives, Drea de Matteo is a very talented woman with quite a few acting credits to her name. The mother of two and trilingual leading lady lost her apartment in NYC to a gas fire in March of 2015 in the tragic fire that ruined many homes and injured a dozen people. This apartment was her home of 22 years, and the actress was heartbroken. She has had some good news in 2016, however; she was recently engaged to her longtime boyfriend and Whitesnake bass player, Michael Devin. This talented vixen is in an upcoming horror flick called The Others alongside Cary Elwes.
