How unbelievably cool would it be to be an actor and get cast as a superhero? The fact that they even get paid (and paid well) is a huge bonus!
What started back with Iron Man in 2008, has grown to involve several movies that bring in billions of dollars at the box office.
The most recent Avengers movie, Age of Ultron, raked in $1.405 billion and the most recent entry in the MCU, Captain America: Civil War, brought in $1.152 billion. You can only imagine that the expectations for the Infinity War series, which has an estimated budget of $1 billion, are high. After all, Age of Ultron’s budget was $316 million and it was already one of the most expensive movies of all time.
Part of making up that $1 billion budget is paying the actors, one of whom might be raking in $200 million for his role in the upcoming Avengers movies.
While these actors haven’t all made their money from superhero films, many of their paydays have become public knowledge and are listed below. Chris Evans‘ first crack at Captain America brought him $300,000, but do you know how much he got for Age of Ultron? And you may think it’s Evans who earned the ridiculous payday from Captain America: Civil War, but it’s RDJ’s payday for his part in the movie that may make your jaw drop.
With overall net worths ranging from $1.5 million to $250 million, it’s clear that at the very least, these stars can all live comfortably.
Granted it also helps when they star in films like The Hangover, which as you’ll learn, made Bradley Cooper a very rich man. There’s even a star below that at one point in her career, commanded $16 million per film!
Below we’ll also cover some of the stars’ upcoming film, including Kong: Skull Island, which involves 3 stars from the Marvel Universe, as well as which star is going to be voicing The Grinch!
Have a friend that loves the MCU? Feel free to share the list on social media.
20. Elizabeth Olsen – $1.5 Million Net Worth
Elizabeth Olsen does not have as much experience in the Marvel universe as some of the other powerhouses that you are going to read about below. As a result, her net worth is merely a paltry sum of $1.5 million (oh, the horror!)
It is clear that Olsen is both sexy and talented though, and we cannot wait to see more of her playing The Scarlett Witch. Unfortunately, fans are going to have to wait, as the next project Olsen takes on is Light on Broken Glass. Olsen will be portraying the younger version of Melody Harper, a Broadway artist who towards the end of her career struggles with the reality that her best days are behind her. As a result, she starts to have a mental breakdown and sees visions of her younger self, who Olsen portrays.
19. Anthony Mackie – $2 Million Net Worth
Anthony Mackie may not be the most experienced Marvel Universe actor, but with a net worth of $2 million, you can bet he isn’t complaining. While you might always know him as The Falcon, Mackie also had notable roles in Pain and Gain, Gangster Squad and has even had experience both on and off-Broadway.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, there are rumors that a solo Falcon movie may be on the way in the future. You can imagine if this comes to fruition, that Mackie will be able to really live it up.
Mackie’s most recent non-superhero role came in the TV movie, All The Way, in which he played the real-life superhero, Martin Luther King Jr.
18. Brie Larson – $10 Million Net Worth
You aren’t going to be able to complete this list and not include the most recent member of the Marvel family, Brie Larson. Larson is cast as Captain Marvel and will be the first female to have her own solo Marvel film. While she hasn’t cashed in a Marvel cheque quite yet, her current net worth of $10 million is nothing to sneeze at. Larson has definitely earned her income with roles in United States of Tara, 21 Jump Street and Room, the latter of which she won a Best Actress Award for at the Academy Awards.
Larson is also a former songwriter, but something tells me she is probably looking forward to living even more comfortably once the world gets to fall in love with her as a superhero.
Larson is currently set to star in Free Fire which also stars Cillian Murphy and is set in 1978. The movie tells the tale of two gangs meeting in a deserted warehouse, which then turns into a shootout and a game of survival. Sounds just a little intense, eh? Larson, like two other actors on this list, is also one of the leads in the upcoming movie Kong: Skull Island.
17. Zoe Saldana – $14 Million Net Worth
Zoe Saldana must really love traveling to space, as two of her biggest roles in Star Trek and Guardians of the Galaxy involve some serious amount of time in orbit. She may not have shown off her beautiful face, but Saldana was the lead of the movie Avatar, which earned $2.788 billion at the box office. So naturally, Saldana was locked down for the 3 Avatar sequels which have been confirmed (but are all in pre-production). It is clear that Saldana is no stranger to box office success, and with a personal net worth of $14 million, you can also understand that she probably isn’t hurting for cash.
Saldana is also the lead in the movie Live By Night which was written and directed by (and stars) Ben Affleck. The movie is set during the Prohibition Era and if Affleck’s track record is any indication on projects he works with, the movie will be nothing short of outstanding, which means Saldana’s stock may be sky-high by the time Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters.
16. Benedict Cumberbatch – $15 Million Net Worth
Okay, so he hasn’t quite hit the big screen yet, but how excited are you for Doctor Strange?! The movie is set to release on November 4th and while it isn’t clear how big of a part Strange will play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the bigger the better.
Benedict Cumberbatch is a well-recognized actor for his outstanding portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series. Cumberbatch also has a fantastic voice which he used to full effect playing the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit series. That won’t be the last time you hear Cumberbatch though, as he was also cast as the Grinch in a 2018 animated version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Cumberbatch is also keeping himself busy by playing the voice of Shere Khan in an upcoming version of The Jungle Book.
All of those impressive roles, and yet Benedict Cumberbatch’s net worth of $15 million is one of the lowest on this list. He may have some fantastic roles under his belt so far, but we bet Cumberbatch cannot wait for his Marvel cheques to start rolling in!
15. Cobie Smulders – $18 Million Net Worth
Now, she might not have any superpowers, but there is still no doubting that Smulders is a pretty kickass woman. Playing the character of Maria Hill, Smulders has appeared in the movies but has also appeared on the television show, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. When it comes to where Smulders has earned her net worth of $18 million, you may have to look at her role of Robin Scherbatsky in the classic sitcom How I Met Your Mother.
Smulders has recently wrapped filming on the movie Jack Reacher: Never Go Back where she likely lays the smackdown on some people alongside Tom Cruise. Smulders is also working on Why We’re Killing Gunther, in which a group of eccentric assassins (including Smulders) attempts to kill the world’s greatest hitman, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The movie is being written by Taran Killam, who spent 6 years working on Saturday Night Live, so you can imagine it’ll have some humor!
14. Tom Hiddleston – $20 Million Net Worth
You aren’t going to be able to create a fantastic superhero movie without a villain that people can root against. Enter Tom Hiddleston, who does a fantastic job playing Loki in several of the superhero films. While his salary for playing Loki was not disclosed, overall, Hiddleston has a net worth of $20 million. Which means that him and his new girlfriend, Taylor Swift, can both afford to go out and have some pretty wild times.
Hiddleston, like Larson and our #2 candidate, is going to be appearing in the upcoming film Kong: Skull Island. Hiddleston most recently finished filming a TV Mini-Series, The Night Manager, that is also starring Hugh Laurie.
13. Mark Ruffalo – $20 Million Net Worth
Mark Ruffalo must have been ecstatic that things fell apart between Edward Norton and the studio and he was given the chance to take on the role of The Hulk. While he hasn’t had his own individual movie yet, Ruffalo still earned an impressive $2-4 million for his 28 minutes in the first Avengers film. Sadly, Ruffalo brought in the least amount in comparison to his main co-stars for Age of Ultron, bringing in (only) $2.8 million. Granted it was also probably a factor that Ruffalo was literally on screen for less than 10 minutes!
Ruffalo has a net worth of $20 million that he has earned over the course of his career. As well as being a superhero, Ruffalo has appeared in Foxcatcher, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Spotlight. In 2017, the only movie that Ruffalo has on his docket is rocking out with Chris Hemsworth in Thor: Ragnarok.
12. Chris Pratt – $30 Million Net Worth
When Chris Pratt was first cast as the lead in Guardians of the Galaxy, a lot of people were understandably skeptical. After all, prior to this big break, Pratt may best have been known as the hilarious (but slightly chubby) Andy Dwyer on the television sitcom Parks and Recreation. In a hilarious moment after Pratt slimmed down over the course of the series, the writers included a joke that all he had to do was cut out beer. Something tells me it took a lot more work to get those abs!
Pratt is definitely a star on the rise, and with a net worth of $30 million, there is plenty to be optimistic about. His involvement in the first Guardians paid him $1.5 million and you can imagine that number jumped dramatically for the sequel.
Pratt’s income is also helped by the fact that he starred in the blockbuster smash, Jurassic World. If you love Pratt’s voice, but not his face, then you probably loved him in The Lego Movie, for which he got paid $900,000.
11. Jeremy Renner – $35 Million Net Worth
You don’t have to see Renner with a bow in his hand to know he’s a badass. After all, the star has kicked some butt in The Bourne Legacy, he’s appeared in Mission Impossible movies and will appear in a sequel for both of those films in the upcoming years. While you may love his character, in an interview Renner said he told the studio that he would have been okay if they had killed his character in The Avengers. Renner had apparently grown restless with his story arc in which he was required to be brainwashed by Loki. Thankfully, Renner also admitted that “I don’t really want him to die now, I really got to explore him a lot and I can’t wait to explore him more and there’s some really cool ideas coming up. Really cool ideas. Great deaths! Amazing ways to die.”
Renner’s bank account was probably pretty happy he stuck around for the sequel, Age of Ultron, in which he took home $6.1 million for his 20 minutes of involvement. Renner took home $2-4 million for his involvement in The Avengers, only appearing in the movie for 12 minutes. Overall, Renner has brought in $35 million which means he can probably afford to buy some pretty cool bows.
10. Josh Brolin – $35 Million Net Worth
Above you read about Loki, but when it comes to creating a captivating villain, even Loki may have to take a step back to Thanos. While we haven’t been able to see Thanos on the screen for nearly as long as we’d like, it is clear that he is going to be a focal point of The Avengers: Infinity War movies. And considering the budget for the movie is going to be ridiculous, you can imagine Brolin is definitely not going to be hurting for money.
Brolin has already had a tremendous career that has seen him amass a net worth of $35 million. One of his best roles came in the movie Milk, for which he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. If you want to see a completely different side of Brolin, perhaps look no further than the satirical film W, in which he plays George W. Bush.
9. Chris Evans – $40 Million Net Worth
When you consider how unbelievably cool it would be to star as Captain America, the fact that he even gets paid must seem like a huge bonus! Chris Evans brought in roughly $2-4 million for his role in the first Avengers movie. Evans actually appeared on screen for longer than any other primary character, but as you’ll read below, his paycheque didn’t come close to our #1 actor. Evans was able to improve on his income substantially for Age of Ultron for which he earned $6.9 million. When he first donned the suit in the Captain America: The First Avenger, Evans only made $300,000. It is clear that he’s been able to invest his money wisely, as it was reported that Evans is currently worth roughly $40 million.
Evans opened up in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel about his apprehensions when he was first approached with the character, saying “I was scared because at first, it was a nine-picture contract, and there are parts of me that have a little bit of social anxiety with this industry. Doing movies one at a time, if all of a sudden you decide you don’t want to do them anymore, you’re afforded the opportunity to take a step back and recalibrate. When you have a giant contract, if all of a sudden you’re not responding well, too bad, you gotta suit up again. That was scary.”
8. Gwenyth Paltrow – $60 Million Net Worth
If Paltrow had a superpower, maybe it would be the ability to have an incredibly long and successful acting career? Paltrow is outstanding in her role as Pepper Potts, but sadly she has not translated this character to either of The Avengers movies. It’s not like she needs the money as she currently has a net worth of $60 million.
Paltrow’s income comes largely from other outstanding projects that she’s been involved with, such as Se7en and Mortdecai, the latter of which starred Johnny Depp and Ewan McGregor and paid her $11.6 million.
It was also reported back in 2013 that the minimum to get Paltrow to appear in your movie was $16 million. While it is clear that some studios did not abide by that, it definitely helps add to your net worth in a hurry! Paltrow is currently working on the movie 33 dias, which stars Antonio Banderas who is playing Pablo Picasso.
7. Chris Hemsworth – $71 Million Net Worth
While you can imagine Thor probably doesn’t have much use for money, Chris Hemsworth is probably pretty happy with the $71 million that he’s earned in during his career so far. Helping that income is the $2-4 million that he brought in for the 25 minutes that he was on screen in The Avengers. When he picked up the hammer for the 2nd Avengers movie, Hemsworth brought home an impressive $5.4 million for only 14 minutes of screen time.
But that still is a far cry from the $71 million that he’s worth. It definitely helps that Hemsworth has also been outstanding in other films such as Rush and Cabin In The Woods. Hemsworth has two upcoming Thor roles and is currently filming Thor: Ragnarok which is his 3rd solo film.
6. Scarlett Johansson – $80 Million Net Worth
With a net worth of $80 million, it is clear that Scarlett Johansson is one of the richest female actresses in Hollywood. It definitely helps that Johansson got her first acting debut in 1994, though her first big breakthrough was in 1996 for the movie Manny & Lo.
Johansson first got to play the character of Natasha Romanoff for Iron Man 2. Her net worth is definitely helped by the fact that she was reportedly paid $20 million, to take on the role again in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron (but that’s nothing on what RDJ got!). I guess it’s not like the director could cast someone else in that role! Johansson reportedly got paid between $2-4 million for her role in the first Avengers film.
Johansson may be one of the sexiest women in Hollywood, but it’s her voice that is going to captivate you next. Johansson will appear alongside Matthew McConaughey and Seth MacFarlane in the animated movie Sing.
5. Bradley Cooper – $90 Million Net Worth
You might not see his face, but Bradley Cooper is absolutely fantastic in his role of Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy. The movie was a huge hit and fans cannot wait to see how the gang is going to have an impact on the rest of the Marvel Universe. Cooper is easily one of the biggest names in the Marvel franchise and has had several amazing films under his belt. Your favorite may very well be his hilarious role in The Hangover, but other roles like Silver Linings Playbook help to show that there is clearly so much more depth to the actor. With a net worth of $90 million, it’s clear that the studio definitely is not afraid to pay for Cooper’s services. It was reported that Cooper earned $5 million for his role in the 2nd Hangover and $15 million for his part in the 3rd. With that kind of money, you can cure any kind of Hangover!
The 2nd Guardians film is already in post-production which means it’s only going to be a matter of time until we start seeing more photos and rumors spill out about the film. Some of the biggest additions will be Nathan Fillion and Sylvester Stallone both joining the cast.
4. Vin Diesel – $100 Million Net Worth
Now, we need to be completely upfront here. Of everyone on this list, Diesel may have the least amount of involvement with the Marvel universe. After all, how much do you really need to study your lines if all you’re saying is “I am Groot”? There’s no doubting that Groot was a charming part of the first Guardians, and with Baby Groot appearing at the end of the first one, you can imagine Diesel’s job is far from done. Unfortunately, his salary for the role was not released so you can’t find out just how much he got paid for his line.
Diesel’s incredible net worth of $100 million that he’s amassed over his career means that it probably didn’t matter how much the contract was worth. Diesel has earned over $10 million for several movies in his career, including $15 million for Fast 5, $11.5 million for Chronicles of Riddick and $10 million for xXx.
3. Anthony Hopkins – $160 Million Net Worth
Anthony Hopkins has had a tremendous career, and no matter how amazing he may be in his later films, it may always be hard to separate him from the character of Hannibal Lector. When Hopkins first took on the role in 1991 for the movie Silence of the Lambs, it netted him a Best Actor Award. When he took the role on again 10 years later in the movie Hannibal, Hopkins brought home $15 million.
If you thought that was impressive, Hopkins brought home $20 million when he played Lector a year later in the movie Red Dragon. Hopkins may not get to kill as many people as Odin, but any time you get offered the chance to play Thor’s father, it’s probably a pretty good decision to say yes.
2. Samuel L. Jackson – $170 Million Net Worth
There are a lot of actors on this list who may always be best known for their superhero role. That definitely won’t be the case with Jackson, who’s been creating a legendary career for decades now.
Jackson has played the character of Nick Fury, 16 times (including video games, TV and movies), first beginning in the first Iron Man film. Jackson’s star power is probably what helped him reel in a salary of between $4-6 million for his appearance in the first Avengers movie. Sadly, details of his salary for Age of Ultron were not made public. Over his entire career, Jackson has raked in an impressive $170 million.
1. Robert Downey Jr. – $250 Million Net Worth
Do you want to get a rough idea as to just how much money Robert Downey Jr. is worth? How about the fact that when Age of Ultron was released, Downey Jr. took home a ridiculous $40 million. This made him the highest paid actor in the movie. Though to be fair, it was even less than the $50 million he got after bonuses for the first Avengers film. A movie that by the way, he was only on screen 37 minutes for. When RDJ returned in a major way for Captain America: Civil War, it was reported he brought home $40 million.
Reports are now starting to circulate that with the upcoming Infinity War 1 and 2, RDJ’s salary could reach up to $200 million. Granted, the film is going to have a budget of roughly $1 billion, but that’s still just insane.
As of this point in his career, Downey Jr. has a net worth of $250 million. Outside of his acting roles, RDJ had a $12 million sponsorship deal with HTC phones in 2013.
