Marriages in Hollywood tend to follow the same rules as marriages on the screen: they are short, plagued with drama, and often ill-advised. They also stretch the realms of credulity; can it really be possible that someone who was once considered to be the most beautiful woman in the world ended up with eight husbands?
As crazy as it sounds, some Hollywood romances really do play out like cheesy romcoms or dramatic ensembles. In the case of the 15 marriages on this list, it seems that anything really can happen. They are the shortest marriages which have graced our tabloids, the matches that seemed doomed from the start – and were over before they had even really begun.
In the real world, anyone annulling a marriage or divorcing within these kinds of time constraints would be considered mad, and possibly investigated for possible fraud intentions. But in the case of these celebrities, most of us just shrug and take it for granted, as one of the latest in their string of ridiculous antics. But we have to remember that these stars are all real people, and they must at some point have considered that it was a good idea to tie the knot with the person in question.
Whether these marriages were publicity stunts or acts of madness, we’ll leave you to decide. In the meantime, if you ever meet one of these celebrities, it’s probably best to keep them at arm’s length, just in case!
15. Elizabeth Taylor & Conrad ‘Nicky’ Hilton – 205 days
What a surprise – the woman with 8 husbands we alluded to above is an entry on the list! Well, in order to fit that many in, she had to cut a few of them short. This was her first marriage, and also her shortest. Taylor was an 18-year-old bombshell actress, and Nicky was the hotel heir who took her hand in marriage in a lavish ceremony back in May 1950. It all came crashing down when Taylor realised they had very little in common – and that Hilton was a mean drunk with an abusive tongue. Their divorce was granted the January after the wedding.
14. Drew Barrymore & Tom Green – 163 days
Drew’s not great at making marriages last for a long time, as we’ll see further down this list. For now, though, let’s examine her relationship with Canadian comedian Tom Green. They got together in 2000 and decided to tie the knot a year later, in July 2001. It took just five months before Green ended up filing for divorce, the following December. He cited irreconcilable differences between the pair. We’ll get back to Drew and whether or not she might be the common denominator that caused the trouble a little later on, so keep reading for another shocker from the actress.
13. Renee Zellweger & Kenny Chesney – 128 days
She was an Oscar-winning actress; he was a country music superstar. The Texas girl went ahead and got hitched to Chesney back in May 2005, when her star was shining arguably at its brightest. They were only dating for a short time, and totally in secret, before suddenly going ahead and tying in the knot in St John. But it was only four months later that Zellweger filed for an annulment, interestingly enough choosing to cite “fraud” as the reason for the split. Her lawyers were quick to add that this was “simply legal language and not a reflection of Kenny’s character”.
12. Pamela Anderson & Kid Rock – 122 days
Pamela Anderson made waves once before, in 1994, when she jumped into marriage with Motley Crue’s Tommy Lee even though she had only known him for four days in total. But that wasn’t even her shortest marriage! Incredibly enough, it was in 2006 that she made her record: despite having a very on-again and off-again relationship with Kid Rock, the two of them married in July 2006 on a yacht. Anderson suffered a miscarriage in the November, and that seemed to be enough to drive a wedge between the pair once and for all. It took her another 17 days to file for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
11. Bradley Cooper & Jennifer Esposito – 121 days
Very narrowly pipping Pamela and Kid Rock are this pair, who married in December 2006 – obviously not a good year for celebrity couples. They had managed to keep a fairly low profile throughout their dating, engagement, and even marriage, despite Cooper’s star actor status. All that changed, however, in early 2007, when Esposito filed for divorce after just four months together. Esposito claims that Cooper was a “master manipulator”, even though Cooper maintained at the time that the divorce was an amicable and mutual one as they simply drifted apart. Of course, we’ll probably never know what really went on between the two of them.
10. Nicolas Cage & Lisa Marie Presley – 107 days
He was a famous actor from an acting family; she was known for her ultra-famous father. When Cage and Presley met at a party in 2000, while celebrating Johnny Ramone’s birthday, they seemed to hit it off almost instantly. They dated on and off for two years before deciding to settle down together and make it official, marrying in Hawaii in August 2002. Unfortunately, it only lasted for three months before Cage decided he had had enough. He filed for divorce, and stated that they “shouldn’t have been married in the first place.” In a bizarre twist, the divorce proceedings lasted longer than the marriage, finally coming to a close in 2004.
9. Nicky Hilton & Todd Andrew Meister – 85 Days
No, not the same Nicky Hilton as before – this time we’re talking about Paris’ little sister, the socialite and fellow heiress who enjoyed only a fraction of the reality fame claimed by her sibling. She was dating a businessman named Todd Andrew Meister in August 2004 when they went to Las Vegas and decided there and then to get married. Being a businessman, he should have known that impulsive decisions never work out – and the honeymoon period was over very swiftly. In November 2004, less than three months after the ceremony, the marriage was annulled. If this was a publicity stunt, it failed entirely to work.
8. Kim Kardashian & Kris Humphries – 72 days
Let’s take a minute to wonder whether the reality TV star from the famous K-themed family getting married to someone whose name starts with the letter K was a publicity stunt, and move swiftly on to the facts. Kim was with the NBA player from October 2010, though they did not get married until August, 2011. Imagine waiting a whole year to decide to get married to someone – that would be crazy, right? Anyway, the wedding was aired as part of a TV special, and Kim filed for divorce in October 2011. Those irreconcilable differences reared their head again.
7. Pamela Anderson & Rick Salomon – 60 Days
Did you think that you had seen the last of Pamela on this list? Unfortunately, she isn’t known for having tons of class – and when she got married again in October 2007, she chose the man who co-starred in THAT Paris Hilton sex tape as her life partner. Or her two-month partner, as things turned out, to the surprise of absolutely no one. Not only did the wedding take place in Vegas, but it was also conducted during a break in the evening show that she was appearing in at the time. It took less than 10 weeks for her to claim irreconcilable differences and break the marriage up.
6. Drew Barrymore & Jamie Walters – 19 days
Yes, that’s right – we promised you that there was more to come from Drew, and here she is. Way back in 1994, she was just 19 years old, and probably had no idea of the years of fame that were ahead of her. Maybe that’s why she took up with a Welsh bartender named Jamie Walters and, for some obscure reason, decided to get married to him. Most people would already warn her not to get married at such a young age, and it turns out that her case is one of the reasons why we warn that. They lasted for an incredible 19 days.
5. Ali Landry & Mario Lopez – 18 Days
Mario, best known for his role in “Saved By the Bell,” got married to his girlfriend, Ali Landry. At first glance, they seemed to have everything going for them – after dating for six years, they were both doing things the right way. That is, until Lopez went to Spring Break. They got the marriage annulled after 18 days when Landry discovered that he had been unfaithful while partying with friends. He described himself as being “not man enough” at that moment in time. It seemed that admitting his mistake was not enough for a furious Landry, who promptly washed her hands of him.
4. Cher & Gregg Allman – 9 days
You probably most notably remember Cher’s husband as being Sonny Bono, but just three days after finalising their divorce, she decided to celebrate by tying the knot again. Musician Gregg Allman was the lucky man that the singer chose, getting hitched in Las Vegas in classic shotgun style. Unfortunately, Cher never had time to dismiss her divorce lawyer before she had need of him again. During their honeymoon, Allman went on a drugs and alcohol binge, something that didn’t sit well with Cher. Just nine days after the marriage, she filed to have it dissolved.
3. Carmen Electra & Dennis Rodman – 9 Days
Here’s a bingo on the shortest celebrity marriages card – not only was this one the same length of Cher’s, but they also chose to wed in Las Vegas! Perhaps it’s some kind of indication that heading off to Sin City and finding a chapel isn’t the best of ideas. The actress and the basketball player got hitched at 7am, which might have been another hint that things wouldn’t go well. After 9 days, the pair filed for annulment, prompting Rodman’s publicist to suggest that his client may have been “deeply intoxicated” when he reached the altar. Perhaps the biggest understatement we’ve heard in a long time.
2. Britney Spears & Jason Alexander – 55 hours
This one is now the stuff of legend, but it’s still amazing to think that it even happened at all. The pop princess decided to marry her childhood friend in the Little White Wedding Chapel in… wait for it… Las Vegas. To suggest that alcohol may have been involved would be to state the obvious. They showed up in a lime-green limo, and Britney was wearing jeans and a baseball cap. Within 55 hours, she filed for annulment, stating that she “lacked understanding of her actions.” Sadly, it became just another example of her unhinged personal life as her tale unfolded.
1. Zsa Zsa Gabor & Felipe De Alba – less than 24 hours
Anything you can do, Zsa Zsa can do better. Eight marriages? She scoffed at Liz Taylor, and turned the dial up to nine. An annulment within three days? She could manage better than that. It took less than a day for her to annul her marriage to Felipe de Alba, a Mexican attorney and actor (because of course). The reason? Try the fact that she actually still wasn’t fully divorced from Michael O’Hara when they got hitched on board a ship on April 13, 1983. They did not attempt to marry again after the divorce went through, with Zsa Zsa claiming she had grown bored of Felipe.
