Good television comes in the form of drama, comedy and reality. Good television also involves lots of nudity and sex! What was once taboo is now the norm, since even the major networks have gotten it on. Known not so long ago as a “freeze frame” moment, the nude scene is not easy to pull off with many failing, or at least coming up short. When done right though, nothing beats a close encounter between the sheets featuring close characters, chance encounters or mortal enemies.
Just missing the list is the show Gigolos, which takes place in Las Vegas and focused on male prostitution (nudity in each and every episode), as well as Boardwalk Empire which had a couple of “did that just happen?” nude scenes. Special nude comedy moment goes to Dexter for the “Pardon my T**s” episode; a completely unnecessary scene that was all about baring breasts on television for the hell of it. Finally, a dishonourable mention for the HBO show Girls, a show that has a lot of nudity, but none of it necessary.
We’ve got men, women, drama and even a little comedy (okay, lots of comedy). If nudity on TV isn’t fun (and funny), then what’s the point? It wasn’t long ago that a backside on the small screen was a big deal, but now, we have come a long way! Here are the best (and steamiest nude scenes) from television shows:
15. Sex and The City – Samantha’s Sushi Spread
Sex and the City was about, well, it was about relationships and sex in New York City. For viewers it meant that nudity was often guaranteed. Almost every character showed their breasts at some point in the series; however, no character played the nudity card better than Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones. You could write a top 100 on her nude scenes, but the number one is when Samantha plans to surprise her guy-of-the-moment by covering her privates carefully with sushi. Of course it was all ruined when it was rehashed the following day at brunch, which was always the problem with that show.
14. Shameless – Nude Guys
Based on the British series, Shameless, features a lot of nudity, most importantly, a lot of male nudity. Typically it’s the women who shock with their undressing as men are often limited to having to only show their bare butts. For actors Ryan McIntyre and Zach McGowan they either have no problem baring it all or forgot to negotiate the whole “no full frontal” parts of their contracts. This nudity is not unique to the Showtime series, as the British series is also known for uncomfortably long, full frontal scenes where time just stands still, or hangs in the air…
13. Lucky Louie – Early To Rise
Okay, so this one may have been more shocking than steamy, unless of course you find funny sexy. In that case it doesn’t get any sexier (or funnier) than Louis CK. Famous for his standup and comedy series Louie on FX, Louis CK’s first series was Lucky Louie on HBO. The show was shot in front of a live audience and was full of cursing and nakedness. At the end of a show, Louis CK got out of bed naked, yeah, fully naked. Probably more nightmares than dreams were created after watching that scene, but then again if you really liked his comedy to each their own…
12. Oz – Jailbird Love
Even for HBO, Oz was one of the most underrated shows of all time. For fans of male shower scenes, even more so. For those fans, I trust you own all of the DVDs because pretty much each episode had a scene in the hot showers with fully naked stars such as Luke Perry, Scott Winters and Christopher Meloni. Their characters would fight, have sex and even talk in the nude. Perry’s character was the prison preacher and yet still there were numerous episodes where his clothing went missing. For many, the nudity made the series too uncomfortable to watch. For the rest of us, it made it real or sexy…
11. Masters Of Sex – Revenge Served Best Naked
A show titled Masters of Sex is what you are looking for when it’s late and your internet is down. This show doesn’t disappoint. There is nudity and sex everywhere in this show. Are you a fan of doctor’s offices? They have that covered, how about the kitchen? Yeah, you can find that here as well. In the second season, Libby Masters got her revenge, with an activist, which is really cold revenge. Based in the early 1960s, this show puts an interracial sex show on full display.
10. Gordon Ramsay’s Hotel Hell – Shower Show Off
So I just had to include this one in the list. Hey, showers are steamy, give me a break; also, if you are really into food (and chefs) this particular scene may just do it for you. In Hotel Hell, there are several scenes of Gordon Ramsay’s buttocks in the shower. Now, I checked (research of course) and you know what, it wasn’t necessary, but in some weird chef way it worked. Maybe it’s the hilarity of Ramsay and his behind, I don’t know, but hey, the show has his name on it, so he can do whatever he wants. (Note: Gordon Ramsay wants to show off his arse!)
9. The Sopranos – The Bada Bing
Violence and language were most harsh on the HBO drama, The Sopranos, but breasts were also a big deal whenever the mobsters got together at Bada Bing (known as “The Bing”) to talk business. The Bada Bing was a gentleman’s club that was one of the businesses owned and run by Tony Soprano and his crew. The girls dancing were always topless and sometimes off-stage as well. The funny thing was that these girls rarely ever played any role in an episode other than brief eye-candy, or a break from the violence. Outside of “The Bing,” an honorable mention goes to Tony’s Russian mistress who did appear nude a few times during their rendezvous.
8. True Detective – Couch Surfing
An actress exposing her breasts is not necessarily news worthy, but in the case of Alexandra Daddario, it was shocking to see her remove her shirt quite quickly on True Detective. That scene alone is sexy, hot and definitely had the “wow” factor. Added factors that made the scene something to see was that it involved Woody Harrelson as the lucky man on the receiving end of this exposure. I mean, Woody Boyd, the bartender from Cheers, seriously? (Stop your comment now, I know he’s done many other things, but he’ll always be Woody Boyd to me.) Also, handcuffs? Always awesome!
7. Orange Is The New Black – The Pilot Shower Scene
Television shows, especially dramas, tell an ongoing story so timing is very importing. You know the saying, timing is everything, right? Well, when Orange Is The New Black unleashed the shower scene in the first episode (yes, the pilot) that is first, making a statement and secondly, setting the stage for down the road (spoiler alert: very true in this case). Piper has an ex-girl named Alex, who is very hot. The pilot episode goes back in time to give the audience a glimpse of their past relationship. It’s a shower scene between the two, a slow, slow and sexy shower scene. That’s how you write a pilot to get picked up.
6. Rome – Open Bathing Policy
James Purefoy played the role of Marc Anthony on Rome, an HBO show that, like most on the network, didn’t shy away from nudity or adult situations. The “steamiest” episode is when he decided to take a bath in front of many Romans, Anthony was so confident he showed off his naked body to all who wanted to see. I’m more of a shower guy, but I do get the whole relaxation part of it, especially if you incorporate candles and wine. There were no candles or wine in this scene, and I suspect there must have been quite a chill coming out of the water.
5. Queer As Folk – Extra Credit
Americans are prudes when it comes to television, so sex and nudity between gay men on the small screen didn’t happen for a long time. In fact, it took the show Queer As Folk to make this happen. Sure, it’s Showtime, but it’s a start. Queer As Folk introduced the American market to Brian and Justin and then intimately introduced them via a very graphic sex scene. Did I mention this was the pilot episode? All actors were forced to sign a 21-page contract that stipulated they would have to appear nude; however, the main characters rarely went full frontal, leaving this to the “extras” that were hired to fill the void.
4. Californication – The Threesome
This show had a lot of sex in it, but this episode was unique. How unique? Apparently 60 advertisers pulled their business from the show after this episode. What happened is Hank and Charlie meet this girl, a girl Hank had a one-night stand with, but didn’t call. She beats him up and then they end of up back at his place where a threesome breaks out. All three are very sweaty and very nude in bed together. They are well into the festivities when Hank remembers why he never called her back. It’s too late to alert Charlie as the girl climaxes “everywhere” right as their significant others walk into the room. It was a naked messy situation all around…
3. Entourage – Skinny Dipping
Entourage was a show about the character Vincent Chase and his friends from back East living the life in Hollywood. The life in Hollywood apparently means smoking pot and lot of breasts, because both were plentiful in this HBO dramedy. In season seven, this was kicked up a notch when Chase started dating Sasha Grey, an adult movie star. More breasts and even naked men were shot in the season seven episodes, but the “best” nude scene was all Sasha Grey when she decided to go skinny dipping. As with most of the actresses that hung with Chase during this series run, she was way out of his league.
2. True Blood – Fang Banging
For a while everyone really loved vampires, sort of like the way Huey Lewis was huge for a while, then it dropped off – fast. The good news is people still really love nudity and when vampires were hot, naked vampires was even hotter. The nudity in True Blood was often and very gratuitous. Given the frequency what scene made the list? Well, that would have been the threesome with Bill, Eric and Sookie. Despite being an HBO show, the sex itself isn’t that graphic, but it’s about the little things, right? The double bite at the end, that’s just the cherry topping that works for any vampire infused threesome.
1. Game of Thrones – Wedding Bliss
Game of Thrones is one of the hottest shows on television today, so it’s no surprise it made this list. This show has crossed a lot of barriers during their run and crazy nudity is near the top of the list. Game of Thrones hit the ground running in the first season introducing a forced marriage between Daenaerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo, but sometimes opposites attract. In this case they attracted quickly and by the second episode were very naked and knocking boots. (Note: Definitely not a phrase used in Game of Thrones.) What started in their “marital” bed quickly branched out to a point where we can’t imagine the two of them literally connected (or naked for that matter).
