Read any superhero comic and try to tell us that the characters aren’t all hooking up with each other. Seriously, there are very few ladies in the Marvel Universe who haven’t slept with Daredevil, and even less who haven’t slept with Luke Cage. But when every man and woman is drawn to be unbelievably sexy, there will be a lot of heat between the adrenaline-filled heroes.
Even though it happens in the comics (a lot), in the movies you’re not going to see many instances where the heroes strip down and make like rabbits after beating up some hired thugs. There are some, but few and far between. Instead, we are often treated to angsty-stolen glances that make the audience want to scream “Just do it already!”
Since they rarely ever “just do it,” fans have to make due with the few scenes that we are treated to. Here is our list of the 12 most paused moments in comic book movies.
Warning: this article contains spoilers.
12. Mystique on the floor in X-Men: The Last Stand
Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most beautiful women acting right now and has been a fantastic Mystique. That being said, there was something different about Rebecca Romijn’s turn as the body-changing mutant – it’s probably the fact that she was actually naked for pretty much the whole trilogy. In X-Men: The Last Stand, Mystique is shot with the mutant cure. The following few seconds focus on the Victoria’s Secret Model as she shifts from blue skinned Mystique, into an exposed Rebecca laying on the floor.
11. Eva Mendes’ booty in The Spirit
Hey, bad movies can be good for something. Spider-Man 3 taught us that too many villains destroys movies, and The Wolverine taught us that ninjas don’t always make a movie cool (just 95% of the time). The Spirit confirmed that Eva Mendes, without a shadow of a doubt, has a glorious backside. In a scene where… well, I have no idea the premise of the scene. It was a terrible movie, and the continuity between scenes was confusing. What I do remember is Eva dropping a towel to give us all a view of what she was working with. The 3-second drop wasn’t really worth watching the 103 minutes comprising the movie, but it got close.
10. Underwear clad Sue Storm in Fantastic Four
Remember, bad movies sometimes give us good things. In 2005, Fantastic Four showed the world that it isn’t so easy to make any superhero into a blockbuster hit. It also gave us a real good look at Jessica Alba. Before she can control her invisibility, Jessica embarrassingly turns invisible with all her clothes on. Knowing that her power is useless if she appears as a bunch of flying clothes, Jessica begins to strip. While taking her clothes off, she accidentally turns visible as soon as she was left wearing only her bra and panties. It’s truly a scene worth pausing in a movie not worth seeing.
9. Eva Green bares all in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
Oh Sin City – what a movie. Honestly, the entire franchise is pretty much a series of moments that beg for a pause button. For every badass action sequence, you get to see a smoking hottie in her underwear. In the sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, director Robert Rodriguez seemingly wasn’t trying to make a smart movie, and instead opted for a very sinful one. Arguably the “best” moment in the film is when Eva Green exposes it all for the camera to seduce Josh Brolin‘s character. After Brolin and Green make sickeningly sweet love, Brolin gets punched through a window. So overall, it was a perfect scene.
8. Silk Spectre and Night Owl Hook Up in Watchmen
The movie version of Watchmen is good for 2 things. It can be used as reasoning as to why Zack Snyder shouldn’t work on more comic book movies, or you can watch it for Malin Akerman. There are plenty of great shots of her, from the sexy outfit to the atomic bomb kiss to her threesome with Dr. Manhattan. The most popular scene would probably be the scene where she and Night Owl get freaky up in his owl-plane. The movie may have missed the point of Silk Spectre’s character when translating it from the book, but we aren’t complaining.
7. Shirtless Thor
Seriously, just look at this dude, he puts us all to shame. By simply removing his shirt, Thor leaves a super composed Natalie Portman and a super chatty Kat Dennings absolutely speechless, as well as anyone watching the movie. In the context of the movie, the scene made very little sense, and seemed to only have been put in because director Kenneth Branagh’s wife wanted to see the God of Thunder’s abs. Chris Hemsworth has gone on record saying that he wasn’t thrilled by the idea of being topless in the film, but bro, if you look like that why even wear a shirt?
6. Black Widow tied up in The Avengers
There are a lot of Black Widow moments that get paused a lot. Whatever your opinion is on how Marvel has handled using the super spy in the past few movies, no one can deny that Scarlett Johansson makes one fine Natasha. Possibly her most popular scene is her first from The Avengers, where she is interrogating suspects while being tied to a chair in a skimpy cocktail dress showing plenty of skin, and 6 inch heels. I don’t exactly know how the suspects lasted so long before spilling their secrets.
5. Catwoman Extravaganza
This is a three for one. We won’t say which Catwoman is the hotter one, but we will say “Me-ow.” Shut up, that joke was awesome. The character of Catwoman is hot. Every movie she’s been in, there is at least one moment that we all want to see again. Whether it’s when Michelle Pfeiffer licks Michael Keaton, when Anne Hathaway seduces Christian Bale, or when Halle Berry wears whatever outfit the 13-year-old costume designer drew for her. You can say what you want about the tight leather, or the ridiculous fight scenes choreographed to show off her assets, but we love Catwoman, no matter who plays her.
However, in all honesty, if Halle Berry plays Catwoman again, we’re going to cry.
4. Wade Wilson and Vanessa do the Holidays
Ok, this one hasn’t been paused too often yet, but it’s probably because the movie is still in theaters. Before getting brutally tortured and turning him into the “Merc with the mouth,” Wade and his girlfriend Vanessa partake in some colorful holiday rituals. This includes sexual food-play for Thanksgiving, biting body parts with fake vampire teeth for Halloween, and going celibate for Lent. Most moments throughout the scenes are not so much hot as they are hilarious, but it gets a pass seeing as we get a mostly naked Morena Baccarin and lots of shots of Ryan Reynolds’s bum.
3. Underwear clad Nancy Callahan in Sin City
Sin City probably deserves to be on this list more. Pretty much every scene is a middle-school boy’s dream. Now obviously in this dream, girls like Alexis Bledel and Rosario Dawson flaunt what they got, but the pinnacle is seeing Jessica Alba dancing on stage wearing almost nothing. This hot moment may go down as the most pause worthy moments in not only Sin City, but any movie ever. This scene really helped to launch Jessica Alba’s career. It was her first blockbuster and after we saw her in it, no one would forget who she was.
2. Miranda Tate’s bare back in The Dark Knight Rises
This scene is one of the most paused for 2 reasons. The first is because the clue of who she is tattooed on her back shoulder. The second is because Marion Cotillard is incredibly sexy. Seriously, Marion can get more eyes on her by showing off her back than some women can by being completely naked. This is a fantastic scene as it’s beautifully shot, and though it’s very sexy, it doesn’t feel out of place as so many other pausable movie moments do.
1. Mary Jane’s Kiss in Spider-Man
It’s kind of weird to find our most paused moment in a PG-13 film. Weird or not, the famous kiss shared between Spider-Man and Mary Jane definitely ranks at the top of most paused moments. It isn’t because the kiss encapsulated the love that Peter has held for his neighbor the past decade, but because apparently Kirsten Dunst just came back from a wet T-shirt contest. The rain in the scene has drenched the famous redhead who unwittingly left the house in a tight tank top with no bra, plus it looks like she must have been very cold. For the 12-year-olds who were watching the movie, this may have been the greatest movie moment ever.
