With the 2015 Grammy celebrations just a few days away, let’s leave the “best of 2014” judging to the pros. However, with a great year of music behind us (that Frozen soundtrack was pretty sweet, huh?) we’d like to take the music of 2014 and “let it go”- and instead focus on the future, and on the new music that’s to come.
2015 is looking to be incredibly promising with the album releases of many great artists, ranging from pioneers of the biz to some exciting newcomers. Here is a list of the top 10 most anticipated albums for the new year; some albums have definite titles and release dates whereas others have just been hinted at, and who knows, maybe artists will decide to follow Beyonce’s lead and drop albums without notice.
Nonetheless, the next 12 months will bring to us some great tunes and no matter your genre preferences, you will certainly not be disappointed. It has taken quite a while to deduce these ten albums out of the pile of great albums to be released this year. So if you are only excited about the top 3 on this list, we strongly encourage you to broaden your horizons and give the rest of the artists a listen. Like seriously. ‘Cause there’s more to life than Ni**as’ in Paris. Let’s have a look.
10. Modest Mouse, Strangers to Ourselves
After an eight-year hiatus, Modest Mouse is finally releasing a new album on March 3, 2015. Titled Strangers to Ourselves, it seems the band has gone a different route for their new material, apparently moving away from easy-listening folk and into a harder rock sound. Although part of their setlist since 2011, the band officially released their first single off the new album “Lampshades of Fire” on December 15, 2014.
2015 seems to be a great year for up-and-comers. With numerous new artists who are planning for success in the new year, Kwabs has to be a definite favorite. A sultry voice coupled with jazz and soul influences, this 24-year-olds’ material is silky smooth, sounding like a new and improved version of Seal with a hint of James Blake. Due to be released in Spring 2015, Kwabs’ debut album is worth the listen. Keep an eye and an ear out for this great artist who is sure to take us by storm.
8. Florence and the Machine
It’s been a whopping 4 years since the band released their last album, and yes, fans are ready for the next one! With a voice so angelic and distinct, Florence Welch and her band seem to be at work whipping up some new sounds to satisfy all indie-lovers. With very little information leaked about the new album and its release date, the band has not shied away from booking gigs at numerous festivals this summer. It’s a fair guess that they’ll have a new album out within the first few months of 2015.
This Canadian artist, producer, songwriter, musician, singer and music video maker does not fit into a simple box but is a perfect blend of multiple musical genres. Being described by the Guardian as, “sounding a little like everything you’ve ever heard, the whole sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard,” Grimes broke through the mainstream scene with her third album Visions, in 2012. Since then, the artist had reportedly almost completed the fourth album before she decided to scrap the entire thing and start from scratch, being completely dissatisfied with the work. Having since released the single “Go”, which was supposedly intended for Rihanna, we’re sure we’re not the only ones who are eagerly awaiting the release of her new work.
Having started work on their ninth studio album in September, there is no definite talk of a 2015 release date, but one can hope! Although they’ve been around for close to three decades, Radiohead’s music is raw yet full of emotion. What is most refreshing about these guys is they always seem to be reinventing themselves and experimenting with different aesthetics, yet have always remained unified at the core. We are beyond excited to see what the band has in store for their fans and to see which platform they decide to release their work through this time!
5. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Many music fans have a special spot in their hearts reserved for these two and it’s absolutely joyful to hear that their second album will be released in the second half of the year. Having rapped about everything from drug addiction to white privilege, gay rights and thrift shopping, it’s going to be interesting to see what new perspectives these two brilliant artists will present to the public this year. Having debuted in 2012 and blown up in 2013, these two have definitely carved a place for themselves within the hip-hop world. Of course, after having won a Grammy for best Rap Album of the year in 2013, they have a though act to follow. Having laid low in 2014, the duo spent their time in the studio and are ready to take 2015 by storm.
4. Madonna, Rebel Heart
The ultimate chameleon and queen of the industry, Madonna can do no wrong. From pop, rock, country, house, folk and EDM- Madonna has done it all and has always come out on top. How can Rebel Heart be any different? Set to be released March 10, 2015, Madonna released 6 out of the 19 tracks in late December as a response to hackers’ leaking of her new material. Never one to back away from a battle, the queen was definitely not going to let the hackers win. We will have to wait another month or so for the remaining tracks but in the meantime, we can all content ourselves with the absurd additions to her Instagram account.
Releasing an album every year from 2005-2012, Rihanna has taken some much needed time off over the past couple of years (if you call recording the number 1 hit “Monster” with Eminem and doing voice work in a DreamWorks animated film time off). But guess what… She’s back!
Referred to by fans as R8 or #R8, RiRi will be dropping her eighth studio album later this year. Having started out as a pop vocalist and having tinkered with different genres over the years, fans will have to wait and see what genre Rihanna has experimented with this time around. Most details about the album have been kept under wraps, however, we’ve heard through the grapevine that Rihanna recorded a song titled “Burritos” which may be on the album. Sounds yummy!
2. Kanye West
All things considered, 2015 seems like it could be a year of change for Mr. West. After a life-changing year, from the loss of his mother to the birth of his daughter, Kanye has had a lot to write about. Eager to share his new material with his fans, Kanye released the piano ballad, “Only One”, written in the perspective of his late mother. This tear jerker is about as far from what we would expect from Kanye as we could get. Collaborating with Paul McCartney– it seems as though Kanye’s seventh album will be the most emotional one yet. Maybe baby North really did guide the direction for this new album, or perhaps Yeezus has finally noticed that all of his previous antics only annoy-zus.
1. Adele, 25
Many fans were expecting the british singer’s third studio album to be released in 2014, something Adele was unable to deliver. However, it has been tweeted that the new album will be dropped in 2015. Naming her first two albums to reflect her age, Adele has kept the same beat, naming the upcoming album 25.
Her debut album, 19, which was released in 2008, went quadruple platinum in the U.K. and double platinum in the States. Her second album 21, released 4 years ago, shattered every expectation possible. Selling over 10 million albums in the U.S. alone, it is the only album this decade to have acquired diamond certification, spent 24 weeks on the top of the Billboard 200 and earned the singer 6 Grammy awards. Like a fine wine, miss Adele Adkins only gets better with time. No matter which route she has chosen to take with this new album, we can rest assured that it will be mind blowing.
