Many may think that movies and music are worlds apart, two completely different genres under the same celebrity umbrella. Actors in movies are all about bringing the fans down an emotional roller coaster through acting. Musicians on the other hand, likewise elicit emotions from their fans, but through music, lyrics, and song. While it’s true that an actor and a musician do completely different things, they have more in common than you think.
Aside from both being artists and entertainers, their private lives are unofficial public property. They’re constantly under the microscopic scrutiny of a very nosy, gossip-loving public. The paparazzi just exacerbate the situation, as these photographers give chase to their hapless targets with their cameras and try to catch them at their most candid, awkward moments. They’re perennially under pressure to look fabulous, whether on the red carpet or on the streets heading to the grocery store. The pressures of being a celebrity can often bind rather than divide, as people tend to stick to their own kind.
Perhaps it’s the mix of similarities and differences in an actor and a musician that somehow make them gravitate towards each other. It’s no surprise then, that there are many actor-musician couples in tinsel town. They unite two like and unlike worlds and attempt to have a go at a relationship. Some relationships have lasted throughout the years, but others have sadly fizzled out, leaving in their wake heartbreak and sadly, children from broken homes.
Here’s a list of celebrity couples uniting both the movie and the music industries. Some couples in the list have parted ways, but most are still going strong.
10. Kimberly Williams and Brad Paisley
Who can forget the adorable and endearing Kimberly Williams as Annie, about to walk down the aisle and out of the loving arms of her father (played by Steve Martin) in Father of the Bride I and II? Lately, she’s been playing it low-key in front of the cameras and with good reason. She’s busy raising the two sons she has with country music singer Brad Paisley, whom she met on a blind date. Paisley had known who she was after watching the two Father of the Bride movies and found her attractive. Little did he know he’d end up marrying her in 2003 and raising two children with her!
9. Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams
Though she started out as a singer, Mandy Moore can also call herself a movie actress. Appearing in chick flicks like A Walk to Remember, Chasing Liberty, and Because I Said So, Moore’s film career has been lukewarm and she has ventured into other endeavors, like modeling and fashion design. Due to her music background, it didn’t really surprise many that she married a musician. Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer Ryan Adams is best known for breaking out of his country band Whiskeytown and going on to have a solid career as a solo artist. He and Moore have been married since 2009.
8. Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford
English actress Carey Mulligan has certainly made a name for herself in Hollywood these days. She was first noticed in the 2005 film, Pride and Prejudice, but it wasn’t until her breakthrough role in An Education that she really came into the spotlight as a serious leading lady. Mulligan and Mumford were childhood pen pals who lost touch as they entered adulthood and just reconnected again a few years later. They were married in 2012.

Many know Paula Patton as an actress, but they don’t know she does back-up vocals too, for singers such as Usher. She married her high school sweetheart, Canadian-American recording artist Robin Thicke in 2005 and even starred in the music video of his hit song, “Lost Without You”. Sadly, nine years and one son later, the couple decided to go their separate ways.
6. Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley
Katherine Heigl left Grey’s Anatomy purportedly because she wanted to focus on her family. She made a few movies before and after she starred in the hit show, attempting to enter the chick flick genre with films like 27 Dresses and Knocked Up. However, true to her word, her career took a backseat after she married American singer-songwriter Josh Kelley in 2007. They adopted two children, one of whom had a heart condition and went through a very delicate operation.

She’s married to no less than Justin Timberlake, who’s first and foremost a musician, but has proven his acting prowess as well in movies. Timberlake has had tremendous success as a singer, songwriter, and music producer, so his movie career is only secondary to his music. He and Biel married in 2012 in Fasano, Italy.
3. Beyonce and Jay Z
They’re considered one of the richest and most powerful couples in Hollywood, and rightly so. She’s a successful recording artist with such hits as “Crazy In Love” and “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” and has extended her wings into movies, starring in films like Dreamgirls and Austin Powers in Goldmember. He’s a famous rapper, record producer, and businessman. Together, Beyonce and Jay Z are worth more than $800 million. They’ve put their riches to good use, as they’re both philanthropists, throwing their weight heavily into good causes. After four years of marriage, they were blessed with a beautiful baby girl.
2. Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin
After dating Hollywood big shots like Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck, people were completely thrown off when Oscar-winning actress and Hollywood blue blood Gwyneth Paltrow started dating a musician, Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin. The British singer seemed rough around the edges as compared to the regal and refined Paltrow, but opposites do attract. The pair married in 2003 and have two children together. Unfortunately, as many celebrity marriages go, theirs fizzled out and they separated in March 2014, describing the decision by the now popularly coined term, “conscious uncoupling.”
1. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban
One of the most shocking Hollywood breakups was the marriage of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, who were considered one of Hollywood’s golden couples. To this day, the reason for the divorce is still unknown, though many speculated that it was because of Cruise’s involvement with the Church of Scientology. Kidman met fellow Australian country singer Keith Urban in 2005 and they married in Roman Catholic rites in 2006. The couple is very happy, with two beautiful daughters, thriving careers in their respective fields, beautiful homes to shuttle back and forth to, and most importantly, a strong, solid marriage that hopefully lasts forever.
