Valentine’s Day spending will add up to more than $17 billion this year, according to new research by the National Retail Federation in the USA. It says the average person in the USA plans to spend about $134 on Valentine’s Day gifts for their special someone this February 14. That figure is up a few dollars from last year, but it’s still a long way off what the world’s richest people spend. According to the American Express Spending & Saving Tracker, people in households earning $100,000 or more per year are likely to spend $213 on their lovers, and that Americans will spend about $37 billion all up. Another survey by RetailMeNot.com found that women are hoping for flowers, jewelry and candy while men are seeking out technology gifts and cards. It doesn’t get much sweeter than young love. In 2011, Justin Bieber bought almost all the flowers in an entire florist shop to impress his then girlfriend Selena Gomez. Costing about $2,000, he bought her all the roses, tulips and daisies available. The next year, he spent Valentine’s Day with Gomez and his family at Disneyland, but a couple of days earlier the happy couple spent a romantic night in a $2,000-a-night hotel suite in New York City. The London Hotel penthouse suite is the hotel’s largest and most luxurious, measuring 2,500 square feet. It’s likely Bieber won’t be having quite as much fun this Valentine’s Day. He was set to have a court hearing on February 14 but managed to get out of it. Instead, his trial for DUI charges begins on March 3.
9. Channing Tatum – Spent $5,000+

Lane is a popular jeweler among the world’s richest people and his jewelry can range from about $5,000 for something simple through to well over $100,000 for a custom-made ring. Although Dewan doesn’t divulge the details on exactly what Neil Lane item Tatum bought her for Valentine’s Day last year, she says it was “really amazing” and “awesome”. She also went on to say that the gift was thanks to Sienna Miller because on the set of GI Joe: The Rise of the Cobra, Miller recommended Neil Lane jewelry to Tatum. It seems he has been buying Neil Lane items for his wife ever since – including their custom-made Neil Lane wedding bands and Dewan’s custom-made Neil Lane engagement ring. Other celebs who have had Neil Lane jewelry include Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears and Kate Hudson.
8. Angelina Jolie – Spent $18,000+
On St Valentine’s Day 2010, Angelina Jolie gave hubby Brad Pitt one of the more unconventional gifts we’ve ever seen. She gifted him a 200-year-old olive tree to plant at their French chateau. The tree is estimated to be worth between $18,000 and $30,000. Their chateau has its own olive grove, plus a vineyard and a moat. According to an article in the Wall Street Journal the market for ancient olive trees is a growing one. Jolie is not shy about giving her hubby big gifts – she reportedly has also bought him a $1.6 million helicopter and flying lessons. Last year it was reported by the New York Daily News that Brad Pitt gave his wife breath mints as a joke present for V-Day.
7. Jay-Z – Spent $24,000
Beyonce and husband Jay-Z are known for giving each other lavish gifts and this extends to Valentine’s Day treats. For Valentine’s Day 2009, Jay-Z bought his wife a platinum-covered mobile phone that was reportedly worth $24,000. Other gifts exchanged between this pair include a $2 million car for Jay-Z on his 41st birthday, and at least two Hermes Birkin bags costing $350,000 for Beyonce at Christmas 2010. Jay-Z spent hours in the Hermes Manhattan store in a private room, spending the $350,000 on “Birkin bags, among other things” according to the New York Post. Inspired by Beyonce’s loved up relationship, a Brooklyn restaurant this year is offering a Beyonce-themed Valentine’s Day dinner. The Italian restaurant named Brucie includes a Jay-Ziti pasta dish (costing $19) and a Breastiny’s Child main dish (costing $29). Beyonce has also released her own branded underwear line in time for Valentine’s Day 2014, with “YOURS” and “MINE” printed on them. You can buy the box set (which includes two pairs) for $40.

The happy couple, who broke up one year later, also went to the Cirque Du Soleil Beatles show and had dinner at Nove. 5. Courteney Cox – Spent $45,000
David Arquette and Courteney Cox were married for 11 years before they split in 2010. For their last Valentine’s Day together, Cox bought her husband an antique carousel horse which reportedly could have been valued at as much as $45,000. Unlike carousel horses seen at theme parks these days, this antique item is likely to have been handmade with solid wood and brass poles. Since then, we haven’t spotted any expensive Valentine’s gifts for this celebrity duo. In 2012, Cox spent February 14 out with her daughter Coco in New York City’s Soho district. The pair shopped for the afternoon making several purchases.
4. Jordan Bratman – Spent $78,500
Christina Aguilera’s former husband Jordan Bratman (a music executive) proposed on Valentine’s Day in 2005. He gave her a 5 carat diamond and platinum engagement ring, which is estimated to have cost him $78,500. They married later that year and had a son together. However, around Valentine’s Day 2011 their divorce was finalized. On Valentine’s Day 2008, the new parents were spotted out for a romantic dinner at Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica. Main dishes at this restaurant range from $29 to $42, and bottles of champagne cost as much as $975. It seems the big engagement was the last of the expensive Valentine’s Day gifts for the pair.
3. Howard Stern – Spent $250,000+
Howard Stern, one of America’s most well known radio personalities, ended his marriage of 20 years and got back on the dating scene in the early 2000s. On Valentine’s Day 2007 he handed over a 5.2 carat emerald-cut engagement ring to his girlfriend Beth Ostrosky. Of course Ostrosky accepted the ring, which was worth more than $250,000. The couple married in 2008 and they are still together. Stern just celebrated his 60th birthday, saying it was the “most incredible” night of his life. The bash in New York City featured celebrities such as Jimmy Kimmel, Robert Downey Jnr, Lena Dunham and Jon Bon Jovi.
2. Katy Perry – Spent $340,000+
Soon after her engagement to (now ex) husband Russell Brand in 2011, Katy Perry bought him a car for Valentine’s Day. It was a lilac-colored Bentley Brooklands car, which is likely to have cost $340,000 or more. For Valentine’s Day 2013, the rumor mill was thinking that Perry’s current boyfriend Mayer had proposed on a romantic dinner in Los Angeles, however it turns out the heart-shaped ruby ring her gave her was simple a V-Day gift, worth about $20,000. There’s no word on how Katy Perry will be spending this Valentine’s Day. Her boyfriend John Mayer recently joked that his Valentine this year is his doctor, who performed major throat surgery on him in 2011 and got him singing again.
1. David Beckham – Spent $8 million
For Valentine’s Day 2012, David Beckham’s wife Victoria landed Bulgari necklace worth $8 million. That’s just one example of lavish gift giving between the pair. This year may not be as exciting for the mother of four. David Beckham recently told talk show host Ryan Seacrest that he’ll be in the Philippines come February 14 for some UNICEF visits. However, he did say the pair will celebrate the occasion at some point.
