Being the son of veteran actor Martin Sheen meant that this young actor had a lot of potential to show in his acting career. Pretty much everyone would now acknowledge him for his first break in Oliver Stone’s ‘Platoon’. But Charlie Sheen was born back in 1965 on September 3, 1965. Charlie’s siblings- Emilio, Renee and Ramon were equally very enthusiastic and they ended up becoming well-known actors themselves. Charlie loved to play games with his parents and siblings. But right from a young age, he began to visit his father when he was playing roles in movies. He was there during the shooting of the TV movie ‘The Execution Of Private Slovik’, when he was only 9 years old and he also got a small part as well.

Charlie Sheen first shot to fame with his role in the teen movie ‘Red Dawn’. This movie saw him playing a high school student who is a part of an intrepid teenage army against the Russians. The film soon attracted other directors and producers. After that 1984 movie, he instantly became a sensation two years later with his role in ‘Platoon’. This gritty and moving war movie won many awards and positive reviews as well as good box-office numbers. To date, many consider Charlie’s role as a college-boy recruited as a soldier in the Vietnam War as his finest act yet. After that, he went on to bag more crucial roles.

The Career Path

Oliver Stone, the Oscar-winning maker of ‘Platoon’, decided to cast Charlie Sheen again in his next film. This was 1987’s ‘Wall Street’, a tense drama centering on a young broker who is egged by the evil Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) to pursue more money by illicit means. Today, the film’s script, direction and acting are considered as legendary and Charlie Sheen also won much acclaim for his role as the young and naïve broker. This further cemented his versatility as an actor. It also saw him sharing the screen space with father Martin Sheen who plays his on-screen father as well.

The 90s saw him on his own. This time, he scored a hat-trick with three back-to-back blockbusters in a row. These were ‘Young Guns’, ‘Major League’ and the action-comedy ‘Hot Shots!’. These films helped to make him a commercially viable actor. But after the mid-90s, his good luck began to peter out. He fell out with his wife Donna Peele, after his affair with Brittany Ashland became public and so did his spending on drugs and prostitutes.

In the late 90s, due to his battered public image, Charlie could not bag many roles. Those, which he bagged, were all flops. But it was after 2000 that he began to renew his career. He won the main role in ‘Spin City’, a hit sitcom that won him new respect and acclaim. Though he had a limited run in the series, his acting skills attracted TV moguls CBS to approach him with new roles. The result were two sitcoms that helped to make Charlie Sheen a real legend. One was ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’, which he continued after leaving from 1996. The second, more successful, was ‘Two And A Half Men’. In this sitcom, Charlie played a womanizer trying to handle new responsibilities. The sitcom made Charlie a legend again and it is still very popular indeed.
