The advent of social media has allowed celebrities to have direct contact with their fans. Some have even used it as a catapult to fame. Justin Bieber is a notable example because he started out as a YouTube sensation, with his mother posting videos of him singing R&B songs for the entire world to see. Eventually, someone important did see it and introduced Bieber to Usher, who in turn helped get the young aspiring Canadian singer bag a record deal.
Bieber obviously has first hand experience of the importance of tapping social media, which is why he has made sure that the various forms are fully tapped and exploited. He and Rihanna are the only artists to be in the top five of three of the most important social media networks today, namely Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
But while the two command huge presence in any network, some artists are more popular in one form than the other. Kim Kardashian, with her stunning curves, obviously has a lot of followers on Instagram. She also has a significant Twitter following, though the number of likes on her Facebook page is abysmal compared to other show business personalities. The late Michael Jackson obviously does not have an Instagram and Twitter account, but fans have set up a dedicated page for the King of Pop on Facebook that has garnered more likes than Lady Gaga or Katy Perry. The wit of Ellen DeGeneres and eloquence of Oprah Winfrey mean that they would attract significant following in Twitter, but not necessarily in Facebook or Instagram.
Celebrities using social media have sure come a long way since Ashton Kutcher battled it out with CNN for the first one to reach a million followers on Twitter. Today, he ranks only 19th among all celebrities with only 13.8 million followers. This is so far behind the 35 million of Bieber and Gaga.
