Musicians and entertainers (especially the really successful ones) are constantly on the go. Traveling is a huge part of the business, going from one show to another, sometimes performing in three different countries in one week. Music tours often last months, some have even lasted years. Cher’s final tour lasted from June 14, 2002 – April 30, 2005 with over 300 concert dates.
Music tours often consist of running errands during the day, performing at night and then there comes the after party, sometimes for publicity and sometimes to unwind and have fun. This tough schedule definitely takes a toll on the body, and some musicians have actually collapsed on stage right in the middle of a live performance. Below is a list of 8 musicians who collapsed on stage ….
Madonna is one of the most well-known entertainers in the world and she has had a long and very successful career that has spanned over three decades. And even though she’s presently well into her 50’s, she continues to maintain a strenuous touring and performance schedule. She’s reportedly a gym addict and is extremely vigilant when it comes to her diet – apparently she only allows herself 800 calories a day. This stringent routine caught up to her in 2009 when she was performing in Bulgaria in 2009. She was singing her song “Holiday” when she momentarily fainted. Luckily her back-up dancers propped her up, and she was able to continue the concert without missing a beat. Now that’s what you call a true solder!
Wow, the name Meatloaf is definitely a blast from the past! But even though he’s well into his sixties, he is still performing and making a living on the road. In 2011, he was performing in Pittsburgh, and he fainted in the middle of singing his signature hit “I Would Do Anything For Love.” He was 63-yrs-old at the time and he collapsed for a good ten minutes before being revived by the medics on hand. You would think he would call it a night after going through such an ordeal, but he got back up, dusted himself off and finished his show.
When you talk about mainstream goth rock, the artist that mostly comes to mind is Marilyn Manson. By now, most people are probably quite used to his “shock and awe” antics, but there was a time when Manson was one of the most risqué acts around. These days, in addition to his music, he has also taken to acting and has appeared in shows like Californication and the new season of Sons of Anarchy. In February of 2013, Manson was performing a show in Canada when he vomited and fainted on stage. It was later reported that he was battling a bout of the flu, but thankfully, he quickly bounced back and continued with his tour two days later.
Rapper Tone Loc may just be one of the most popular old school rappers ever. He had a pair of hits in the late 80’s – namely “Wild Thing” and “Funky Cold Medina.” Both of those records sold like crazy and till this day, he still tours and does concerts to perform those hits. In March of 2013, the 47-yr-old rapper was performing at a concert in Des Moines, Iowa when he passed out on stage. The paramedics were called over to revive him but he picked himself up and refused to be hospitalized. Even if you’re an old school rapper, the show must go on.
Global superstar Justin Bieber is the last performer you’d expect to pass out on stage – have you seen this young stud with his shirt off? He is almost as chiseled as Portuguese soccer star Christiano Ronaldo and he’s still really young and full of youthful energy. But last year, while performing in London at the O2 Arena, he fainted on stage during a live performance. He was taken backstage for oxygen treatment and then came back on stage after 20 minutes to finish his show. Perhaps all the excessive partying he does on his down time finally got to him.
Jojo (from K-Ci & Jojo):
R&B duo (and blood brothers) K-Ci and Jojo enjoyed a very major hit with their successful love song “All My Life” which is still a favorite at weddings till this day. But even though the song continues to live on and thrive, one of the song’s singers seems to not be doing so well. While performing their hit song in Australia in 2008, Jojo completely fainted on stage and his brother had to soldier forward and finish the performance without him. After the incidence, rumors started flying around of Jojo’s problems with extreme alcoholism and that he was likely drunk and high before going on stage. Let’s hope he’s been able to get his act together since then.
Alexa Ray Joel
Alexa Ray Joel is a singer and just happens to be the daughter of music legend Billy Joel and model /actress Christie Brinkley. In 2013, she was performing to a packed crowd at the The Café Carlyle in Manhattan when she suddenly fainted. She was rushed to the New York Presbyterian Hospital and was successfully treated and discharged. It was later reported that the cause of her fainting was “vasovagal syncope” – a common cause of fainting that is caused by a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure.
Over the years, Ohio rapper Scott Mescudi aka Kid Cudi has made quite a name for himself in the rap industry. He made a splash with his debut single “Day ‘N’ Nite” and he went on to become Kanye West’s protégé for several years. Presently, he has branched into acting amongst other creative endeavors – he recently appeared in the movie Need For Speed featuring Aaron Paul and he also part of the HBO series How To Make It in America. Cudi still does his music thing and late this summer, he was one of the featured acts in the North Shore concert in Chicago. During the concert, a fan approached Cudi for an autograph, and the rapper fainted while he was trying to sign his signature. He was quickly revived and later sent tweets to all his fans that he was okay.
