Becoming an actor might not seem like the hardest job to some people, but it is in fact quite the challenge. When you audition for a role, the director doesn’t typically want to know anything about you; he simply wants to know about the character that you are portraying. The character becomes you.
Unfortunately, most actors are not casted solely on their acting talents. And this is simply because there are many factors that go into finding the perfect person for each individual role. It’s like making a complex soup with many rare ingredients. In the end, what it boils down to is having the right physique, attitude, talent and above all, catching the director’s eye.
But where do you draw the line between characters and actual human beings? Just because your character likes to get undressed in front of the camera, that doesn’t mean that you will be okay with it. In fact, many actors use doubles when it comes to filming sex or action scenes. In the end, no one is forced to do anything that contradicts their beliefs.
15. Chris Pratt – Lovemaking Scenes
It might come as a shock to find out that Chris Pratt now refuses to partake in sex scenes on camera. The successful actor, who basically started off his career naked, has now had enough. Pratt has openly spoken of his past as a stoner and stripper, but has made sure to announce that those days have been put to rest. It would be a lie to say that Pratt has never been involved in a sex scene or two, but ever since his son was born back in 2012, he had a change of heart. When Pratt and his wife Anna Faris had their baby Jack, not everything went as planned. Jack was born nine weeks premature and needed to spend a month in an intensive care unit. This experience caused Pratt and Faris to restore their faith in God and ever since then, Pratt has turned his back on sex scenes.
14. Denzel Washington – The Pelican Brief
Denzel Washington is not a name that is easily forgotten. His trademark smile and exceptional acting skills have caused women to swoon over him since he started acting back in 1977. In 1992, Washington was cast as Gray Grantham in the movie The Pelican Brief, alongside co-star Julia Roberts, who played the role of Darby Shaw. The pair were scheduled to act out a lovemaking scene but unfortunately for Roberts, Washington voted it off the script. Why? Because Washington did not want to offend his female African American supporters by engaging in an interracial love-scene. “Black women are not often seen as an object of desire on film. And they have always been my core audience,” said Washington. Although this event was greatly disputed, Washington was not forced to do anything that contradicted his beliefs and Roberts did not take any offense to it.
13. Nina Dobrev – The Vampire Diaries
When dating a co-star, you need to make sure that if things turn sour, you will both remain professional. However, this wasn’t the case for Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder, who played on-screen lovers for the CW series The Vampire Diaries. Dobrev refused to act in what would have been her last kissing scene with ex-boyfriend Somerhalder and eventually quit the show. The CW graciously kept her role open for her; in case the actress would someday desire to reinstate her position. But Dobrev had no intentions of being anywhere near Somerhalder, who had dumped her for her close friend Nikki Reed. To make matters worse, the CW often teased that Dobrev would have a hard time transitioning from a TV actress into a movie actress, and so even if Dobrev had wanted to return, her pride kept her from doing so.
12. Brad Pitt – Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Brad Pitt may have started out his career as a sex symbol, but he certainly isn’t ending it that way- at least not since he started dating the gorgeous Angelina Jolie 11 years ago. The pair have been inseparable ever since they met on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith back in 2005. Since then, Pitt has refused to engage in any on-screen love scenes and has exchanged his promiscuous character style for a more humorous one. For some actors, this self-imposed ban would be enough to ruin their careers, but fortunately for Pitt, he has a lot more going for him than his good looks. Pitt and Jolie may appear to be a jealous couple, but can you really blame them?
11. Jessica Alba – Machete
Jessica Alba might have an amazing body, but that does not mean that she is alright with going completely nude on screen. Some of you might believe that you have seen her naked in the movie Machete, but in fact that was all a sham to get you to buy a ticket. It seemed that director Robert Rodriguez has a soft spot when it comes to Alba; not only does he repeatedly cast her in his movies, but he also keeps trying to get her to go nude. In Machete, Alba actually wore a tightly fitted white bra and a pair of matching underwear while she acted out the shower scene. The undergarments were then removed by using CGI and altered to meet Alba’s requirements. The actress also refused to go nude in Sin City, even though she played the role of a stripper. Alba states “I read the script for Machete but there was a lot of sex stuff for my character and I’m really conservative.”
10. Anna Kendrick – Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
Anna Kendrick started off her career as a teenager and has since then kept the same values. When it comes to taking it all off, Kendrick strictly refuses. The young actress has repeatedly been asked on whether or not she will succumb to the pressure of acting in the nude and she answered, “Emphatically, no. I will not do that.” However, in Kendrick’s latest movie Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, the feisty actress does take it all off. But in all fairness, she hides behind a horse the entire time because of her strict no-nude-scenes requirement. Kendrick considers herself lucky when it comes to getting roles, considering that her anti-nudity rule could have lead to her only being cast in teenage movies. Kendrick says, ” I am not criticizing people who do that but I plan to keep doing what I am doing and hope it keeps going good.”
9. Kevin Costner – Waterworld
Kevin Costner played the role of The Mariner in 1995’s Waterworld, a futuristic movie that took place in a world where land grew scarce and oceans plentiful. This movie was once seen as the biggest let-down of its time. A series of complications and injuries led to the crew members requesting compensation from the union due to labor violations. Waterworld was mostly filmed underwater, which spurred a vicious chain of events; cast members were stung by jelly fish, Costner’s stunt-double nearly drowned while performing a diving scene and a platform sank while filming. Costner even refused to film a scene in an ice cold lake, fearing that he would catch hypothermia. Costner was not forced to step into the freezing water, but the scene had to be shot and so a stunt double was brought in to take the actors place.
8. Leo DiCaprio – Django Unchained
Leonardo DiCaprio did not know how he would feel about his character when he first accepted the role as Calvin Candie in Django Unchained. This great actor knew what he was getting into, but could never have fathomed how hard it would be to put himself inside of the shoes of a narcissistic slave owner. The evil plantation owner had a love for a certain derogatory word that DiCaprio felt extremely uncomfortable saying, especially when directed at fellow actors Jamie Foxx, Samuel L. Jackson and Kerry Washington. DiCaprio’s disdain was nearly enough for him to refuse the scene, but after substantial reassurance from his co-stars and director Quentin Tarantino, DiCaprio persevered. “I’d dealt with and seen racism in my surroundings growing up, but to the degree that I had to treat other people in this film was incredibly disturbing,” DiCaprio said to a reporter shortly after filming the scene.
7. Keira Knightley – Domino
Not every actor is 100% comfortable with their body and when it comes to the beautiful Keira Knightley, well let’s just say she has a specific rule about taking it all off. To put it in her own words, “You can have my top half, but you can’t have the bottom half.” So when Knightley found out that she would be required to film a strip-tease scene with only a thong on for the movie Domino, she had to refuse. When Knightley told the director, “It’s not going to happen” he took her into a room where she was then asked to pick a bum-double. As funny as the situation was, Knightley was delighted that she would not have to go through with the scene and so she picked the derriere that looked the most proportional to her own body.
6. Katy Mixon – Eastbound & Down
Katy Mixon is an American actress who you might recognize from TV series Mike and Molly or My Name Is Earl. She recently received a lot of heat after filming a heated topless scene in the first season of the TV show Eastbound and Down. In this scene, Mixon appears to take off her bra in the midst of a fiery make out session in a car. But what most people thought to be Mixon’s breasts were actually a body double’s. When asked why the actress refused the scene, she simply replied, “I just can’t do nudity. I’ll act my face off but I can’t show my boobs. Not with my daddy watching everything I do.” And if that isn’t a good enough reason, then I don’t know what is. With that in mind, it is no surprise that when Mixon found out about the scene, the first words that came out of her mouth were “Well boys, I guess we’re going to have to go with a body double, aren’t we?”
5. Isla Fisher – Wedding Crashers
Isla Fisher played the role of Gloria Cleary in 2005’s Wedding Crashers. In this film, Fisher inhabits the body of a crazed nymphomaniac who will do anything to get a piece of co-star Vince Vaughn‘s character Jeremy Grey. Although Fisher is undoubtedly the perfect actress to play Gloria Cleary, she did not always meet eye-to-eye with the script she was given. Fisher did not feel comfortable with acting in the raunchy scenes that had been written out for her; therefore she sought a body double to take her place.“I feel like if you have a female comic character and then you see her nipples, then she is no longer funny, which is clearly wrong, but that was my theory, and that’s why I didn’t want to do it,” Fisher said.
4. Natalie Portman – Your Highness
Natalie Portman isn’t usually one to complain about nude scenes, but from time to time she has her reasons for saying no. The Black Swan actress has repeatedly acted in the nude for various scenes, but when it comes to the movie Your Highness, she did use a bum-double. There are two shots in Your Highness where Portman appears naked from the back, but only one shot is actually her. Why do one but not the other? Well, to put it in her own words: “There’s one shot that’s me and the shot of her diving into the water is a body double, because I didn’t want to go in the water-it was really, really cold.” So there you have it. Portman refused to jump into the cold lake and had an Irish student named Caroline Davis do it in her place.
3. Hrithik Roshan – Mohenjo Daro
Hrithik Roshan is an Indian actor who is quite the big-shot in Bollywood. This actor’s light green eyes and willingness to perform his own stunts are only a few of the reasons why his success has become so immense. Roshan is well known for his heroic role in the adventure packed film Mohenjo Daro. Although Roshan is usually happy to fulfill his stunt-man duties, he does not always say yes to every stunt, especially after having undergone a serious brain surgery after being hurt on-set. Roshan refused a scene that required him to jump from one point to the other, from fear that the height of the jump would result in an injury. Roshan has decided to keep his action scenes on the down-low for now, while his body heals from his latest stunts.
2. Mike Myers – Wayne’s World
Mike Myers has a reputation in Hollywood for being an extremely difficult actor to work with. Nevertheless, his comedic attitude usually overshadows his arduous personality and persuades directors to take him as he is. While filming 1992’s classic movie Wayne’s World, it was clear that Myers wanted things to go in a specific direction. The producer of the film had his heart set on using a Guns N’ Roses classic as the opening song, but fortunately for him, Myers did not agree. You see, Myers had already made up his mind about using Queen’s song “Bohemian Rhapsody” and he simply would not budge. When the director and producer ruled the song out, Myers threatened to walk. “I’m out. I don’t want to make this movie if it’s not Bohemian Rhapsody.” And surely enough, Myers got his way.
1. Michelle Rodriguez – The Fast and The Furious
Michelle Rodriguez has never played a role where she did not speak her mind. Her tough alpha-esque attitude is what has led her to play strong independent female leads. Much like her real-life self, Rodriguez is combative when she needs to get her point across. When Rodriguez first got signed on to play Letty Ortiz in The Fast and The Furious, she was living on cloud nine – until she read the script. Rodriguez was shocked to find out that the original script had been formulated with the incentive to create a love triangle between the three main characters in the movie – meaning that Letty would be cheating on Dominic Toretto with Brian O’Connor. Enraged, Rodriguez fought for the script to be changed and even threatened to quit the movie. It wasn’t until co-star Vin Diesel sided with her that the director finally accepted to modify the screenplay.
