This is the time when most of those people who grew up at the turn of the century, i.e. “millennials”, finally realize they are no longer hip and neither are their favorite celebrities. At this stage in their life, their musical tastes haven’t changed since their mid 20s and they have stopped caring about any new artist coming out. All new music is the same to them and it is all much worse then what they grew up with as kids. Their favorite music is now a classic or worse, old school. They are probably in (or near) their 30s by now and people are calling them sir or ma’am. Take solace in the fact that “millennials” are now officially old. Few teens today have even heard of their favorite musical act or movie. They are just like the people that they made fun of just a decade ago. Is this depressing anyone yet?
Cheer up because there are more of us that remember the turn of the millennium in this world, then those who do not. We may no longer be hip, but we are definitely in the mainstream and just now in a position to make the decisions that are shaping this world. As a reward for the newest generation of old people, we take a look back at those demi-Gods that made their lives better and we give solace to this generation so that they can see how gracefully they have aged when compared to some of these famous people that they were in awe with as kids or teens. No celebrities that were only stars as children on this list, just young adults who were at the top of their game just over a decade ago.
15. Mischa Barton
Today, Mischa is 30 years old. At this tender age she has already moved on quickly to the hot mom look, from the cute teen look she sported only 9 years ago. Where do we know her from? The British actress gained fame in 2003 as the affluent teenager Marissa Cooper, on The O.C. where she garnered several Teen Choice Awards before the show abruptly fell in the ratings and got cancelled in 2006. As a youngster she appeared in The Sixth Sense and Notting Hill. This year she can be seen on Dancing with the Stars.
Though never suicidal, she did start cracking after her fame died down as a result of the cancellation of The O.C. Her excessive partying led to a DUI in 2007 and then in 2009, she was placed on psychiatric hold. Her life is back on track now, but those party days must have aged her before her time, unless of course it was plastic surgery.
14. Hilary Swank
The smile is almost the same, but something more than just natural aging makes the 41 year old actress look different. Where do we know her from? In the 90s she had a few breakout roles in The Karate Kid franchise and in Beverly Hills, 90210, but she is probably most famous for starring in the 2004 Clint Eastwood drama, Million Dollar Baby, portraying struggling-waitress-turned-boxer Maggie Fitzgerald. It was then that she won her first Oscar for a full-length feature film as Best Actress (it was her second Academy Award in total). She continued to appear in multiple films before the decade ended, where she won multiple awards.
What does she do now? She still acts. A few years ago she was embroiled in controversy for attending an event in Chechnya in 2011, on the 35th birthday of the region’s president, wishing the president Happy Birthday even though she was informed of his human rights violations by human rights groups. She later apologized for her participation.
13. Nick Lachey
Lachey hit the big time as a musician just as the old millennium expired and the new one was brought forth. The 43 year old has aged distinctively with a face that still looks a little like the good old days, albeit with more wrinkles. His style has become far more conventional as well. Where do we know him from? He sold 10 million records with his band 98 degrees, over 4 albums, the two biggest in 2003 and 2006. Jessica Simpson was his wife for four years and girlfriend for another four, thus forming a super couple in the music industry. He is still around on TV with several guest appearances over the years on various reality TV shows.
He dabbled in politics, when as a part owner of a marijuana farm in Ohio, he used his fame as part of a group that tried to legalize medicinal marijuana in that state. Alas his fame was not enough, as the movement lost its bid to legalize pot in 2015. He also partly owns various minor league sports teams.
12. James Van Der Beek
The 39 year old actor looks decidedly older than the 23 year old kid he was once. Perhaps it’s the ruggedness from his stubble that makes him look vastly different. Where do we know him from? He was the central character in Dawson’s Creek, a huge hit between 1998 and 2004. The then 22 year old actor portrayed a 15 year old adolescent in the coming of age drama. He also starred in the football movie Varsity Blues, a hit film that debuted at number one in 1999, and stayed there for two weeks. He presently has a central role in the TV Series CSI: Cyber.
11. Jennifer Paige
The 42 year old singer must have gone for the “natural” look that is currently in vogue, and has seemingly decided to forego makeup. Otherwise, except for some natural weight gain, she really hasn’t changed much and has aged amazingly well. Where do we know her from? Her debut album in 1998 featured the hit single Crush, which instantly propelled her to a critical and commercial darling. Her follow up albums were still big. Her tours even brought her to the Vatican a few years later where she performed for a large audience that did not include the Pope. What does she do now? She released the album Is It Ever Enough on her YouTube channel and has started a KickStarter campaign to fund her upcoming album.
10. Blu Cantrell
Here is a star musician that just dropped out of the spotlight, for one reason: she just lost it and suffers from mental issues. Staying away from the media is a good thing in her case. Even at the age of 40 she still looks good, the only difference is the mind. Let us all hope she makes it through this.
Where do we know her from? She burst onto the scene in 2001 with her debut single, “Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)” which hit number 2 on Billboards’ chart. Her follow up album in 2003 produced even more hits like “Breathe”, along with more Grammy nominations, bringing her total number of nominations to three. This was her final album.
What does she do now? She hasn’t been seen in the media since 2008, when she appeared on NBC’s Celebrity Circus. According to TMZ, she got in a little trouble with the law in 2014, after reportedly running through a Santa Monica, California, neighborhood claiming that people were trying to kill her with poisonous gas. Luckily for her she was sent to the hospital in order to receive the treatment that she needed.
Shaggy, Born Orville Richard Burrell, in Jamaica is 47 years old right now. Other than his namesake Shaggy hair, there is not much else that has stayed the same, but the man still looks distinguished fifteen some years later, even with all of the weed he has consumed. He perfected his signature voice while serving in the U.S Marine Corps during the first gulf war.
Where do we know him from? His most famous hit from the 90s was probably Boombastic in 1995, the theme song of a popular Levi’s commercial. The song won him his only Grammy. He makes this list for his biggest selling album Hot Shot, which was certified 6x Platinum (i.e. he sold 6 million copies) in the U.S. alone, in 2000.
What does he do now? His last recording was in 2013, but he most recently made headlines last year for some harmless comments about I.S.I.S. that drew the ire of many. His comments were something like this: “If you’re able to cut a man’s head off, you’re sick. But right, music evokes emotion. So if they’re listening to Shaggy music or reggae music, they’re not going to want to cut somebody’s head off … There’s two things you want to do when you listen to reggae: You get somebody pregnant, or you’re f***ing high. High people don’t want to kill nothing; they want to love. They need to bag some Jamaican weed and distribute it among Isis … I guarantee there won’t be any more wars out there.”
To summarize, Shaggy feels that his music, Reggae and weed, can defeat I.S.I.S. As a man who fought in wars himself, he can say whatever he wants. There might be some partial answers in those comments even if half of these monsters are probably high on opium themselves. For those who are offended, who cares, let it go.
Eventually when the ‘street cred’ leaves, many successful rappers reinvent themselves, join the quote “real world”, and then surprise us by looking and acting like society wants a perfect gentleman to be. Why should Nelly be different? Where do we know him from? His debut album, Country Grammar sold 8 million copies in the U.S. alone in 2000. His follow-up album one year later, produced two number one hits including Hot In Here, with the lyrics that everyone remembers: “It’s getting hot in here, so hot, so take off all your clothes I am, getting so hot, I wanna take my clothes off “
What does he do now? He still pumps out music having recently released his eighth studio album last year. The singer hinted that this may have been his last album. He is also trying to capitalize on his fame, having created his own TV show in 2014 called, Nellyville, which reminisces about his career and family, including all four of his kids.
7. Amanda Bynes
Presently 30 years old, Amanda is another celebrity who left the spotlight due to mental illness, having retired from show business a few years ago. Luckily for her she still looks happy, at least in front of the cameras. The photo on the right was taken during a pharmacy run. Where do we know her from? She started out as a child star, on her own show called The Amanda Show which ran until 2002. Her hit movies as an adult include, She’s The Man (2006) and Hairspray (2007).
What does she do now? Bynes has been involved in numerous legal issues since 2012. She underwent treatment after her first arrest that same year, and released to her parents in 2013. She ran into more legal trouble and was resent to a treatment center after claiming that her father implanted a microchip in her brain that forced her to make some horrendous accusations. She has since left the psychiatric facility.
6. Alison Lohman
The actress retired a few years ago to become a mother. After giving birth to two children, she looks like a 36 year old mom should, albeit a far cry from her appearance in her younger years when she was typically cast as a teen, even though she was in her 20s. Where do we know her from? Before retiring, she appeared in around 20 movies between 1998 and 2009, roughly two a year. She received award nominations for two of these films; White Oleander (2002) and Drag Me To Hell (2009). Some of her other movies include Beowulf (2007) and Matchstick Men (2003). What does she do now? She went back into acting with Vatican Tapes (2015) and Urge (2016).
5. Thora Birch
The 34 year old actress disappeared in 2012 from Hollywood, only to return very recently looking a lot older than when she left. Perhaps the rumors that she is a frequent plastic surgery customer might have some truth to it. Where do we know her from? There was a four year period between 1999 and 2003 where she could do no wrong. Her first breakout role was in American Beauty (1999) and her last big movie role was in Ghost World (2001). She also dabbled in television during that four year period winning numerous awards in the process. She started acting at the age of 6, having appeared in close to twenty movie and TV projects before becoming an adult. What does she do now? She has a recurring role in the TV Series Colony, and is slated for a couple of movies next year; The Etruscan Smile and Above Suspicion.
4. Hayden Christensen
Now 35 years old and looking nothing like he did in the trilogy that made him infamous. Hayden is one of those celebrities that could not fully escape the backlash from those films that should have turned him into a star. Where do we know him from? This one is easy. He played the younger version of cinema’s most popular and famous villain, Darth Vader in the Star Wars Prequels in the early 2000s. His performance as Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of The Clones was so perplexing that he won a golden raspberry award for worst supporting actor and was nominated for multiple Saturn and Teen Choice Awards at the same time. In 2004 he angered even more Star Wars fans when he replaced Sebastian Shaw in the final scene of the DVD re-release of Return Of The Jedi. This was done without his knowledge, so blame George Lucas on this one.
What does he do now? Hayden is actually in business partnering with Enjoy Movies and his brother in 2013, thus creating a company called Glacier Films. The goal of the company was to create 11 small budget films over a three year period. Each film would have a budget of around $1.5 million. The first film from the collaboration was American Heist in 2014, a remake of an earlier film starring Steve McQueen called The Great St-Louis Bank Robbery.
3. Kristanna Loken
Here is one for looking better with age even while pregnant. The 36 year old actress and model actually grew up on a fruit farm in New York State. Where do we know her from? She started out as a soap opera princess in 1994, but her breakthrough role was in Terminator 3: Rise of The Machines (2003), where in true Terminator fashion she was a villain of few words. People might also remember her from Mortal Kombat (1998). She is actually an acclaimed actress having won a couple of awards and having been nominated for 3 more. The nominations ironically were all for her Terminator 3 role. What does she do now? Her last movie was Mercenaries (2014). She recently gave birth to a son after having experimented with women for a few years.
2. Tara Reid
Tara is actually 40 years old. She looks paper thin and even skinnier than she did during her mid-20s. I guess that is what happens to actresses when they do not have any kids. Where do we know her from? The answer is simple: American Pie (1999) and American Pie 2 (2001). It is the sequel that catapulted her to star in a multitude of films over the next four years, including Van Wilder (2002) and Incubus (2006). She even appeared in a Playboy pictorial in 2010 at the age of 34. What does she do now? She has become famous for yet another cult hit phenomena Sharknado, having appeared in the first four entries from this franchise. Her career still keeps churning on.
1. Nelly Furtado
The Canadian singer of Portuguese decent is now 37 years old. It is impossible to tell that the multi-lingual musician on the right was once the person on the left. The lady has sold over 40 million copies of her music worldwide. Where do we know her from? She broke out big with her single I’m Like a Bird in 2001, with the catchy lyrics that no one forgets, such as: “I’m like a bird I’ll only fly away I don’t know where my soul is (Soul is) I don’t know where my home is”. In 2006 her album Loose, sold over 10 million copies and it generated two number 1 hits; Promiscuous and Say it Right. She took a three year break after this and then released her first Spanish full length album, winning a Latin Grammy Award in the process. She started writing songs at 12, where she also started to learn to play the 5 instruments she is famous for.
What does she do now? What she does best, writing music and singing. She has six studio albums so far. The mother of one is also involved in children’s charities.
