The Joker is perhaps one of the most evil and sinister characters in all of popular culture. He makes Dr. Doom, Darth Vader, Magneto, Loki, the Green Goblin, Kylo Ren, the Red Skull and even Hannibal Lector seem tame in comparison. The list of terrible atrocities committed by the Clown Prince of Crime is a mile long. He brutally murdered the second robin, Jason Todd, with a crowbar. In The Killing Joke, Joker committed quite possibly his most vile act when he paralyzed Batgirl, and then took photos of her in an attempt to make her father, Commissioner Gordon, go completely insane. His plan didn’t work, but that wouldn’t stop the Joker. He would continue his evil ways.
You would think because of all the terrible things the Joker has done that he would be the most sinister and deranged character of all time, but that may not actually be the case. There is a Disney character that might actually be worse than the Joker. Yes, a Disney character. It may be hard to believe that Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise is anywhere near as bad as the Joker, but based on all the evidence, Jack Sparrow might actually be even worse! You may view him as a dashing rogue at best or a scheming anti-hero at worst. However, the truth is that he is neither of those things. He is actually a lot worse. Here are 15 facts that prove Captain Jack Sparrow is worse than the Joker.
15. Captain Jack Sparrow Is Incredibly Disloyal And A Traitor
Captain Jack Sparrow will literally sell anyone out if it helps himself get ahead. He will not only use his enemies to get what he wants, but he will also use his so-called friends. The few times when it looks like he has actually been acting like a hero are very misleading. He may look like a hero, but he’s far from being one. When he helps others, it’s usually because he has some ulterior motive. One of the first things we see Captain Jack do in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series is save Elizabeth Swann from drowning, but all is not what it appears to be.
All he really wanted was the cursed Aztec gold she had, and to avoid being hanged. He didn’t genuinely want to save her at all. He does not care about any other human being in any way, shape or form.
14. Captain Jack Hates Animals, Especially Monkeys
Say what you will about the Joker, but he at least has some respect for animals. In Batman: The Animated Series, Joker and Harley Quinn had pet hyenas called Bud and Lou, and while it was Harley who referred to these laughing beasts as her “babies,” it was obvious that even the sinister Joker had at least some emotional connection to these misunderstood wild canines.
Jack Sparrow on the other hand has no such bond to pets or wild creatures. He regularly voiced his hatred of Captain Barbosa’s pet capuchin monkey, who was also called Jack, in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Captain Jack even captured monkey Jack and attempted to trade the simian for information on the location of the Dead Man’s Chest.
13. He Is Capable Of Mass Murder, Just Like The Joker
The Joker is a homicidal maniac and capable of great evil, but he usually kills his victims one person at a time. However, on occasion he has been known to set off bombs in an attempt to kill innocents and fill rooms with deadly laughing gas as he did in the movie The Dark Knight and the graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns, respectively. If you thought that this was the kind of thing that only the Joker would do and not Jack Sparrow, then you would be very wrong.
Captain Jack Sparrow had no qualm in finding 100 souls to give to Davey Jones so he could spare his life and settle his debt. So, it looks like Jack Sparrow can be a mass murderer, too. He also had no problem helping Blackbeard lure hundreds of mermaids into a cove so they could be killed. He might not even think of mermaids as the equal to humans, so perhaps he is a racist, too.
12. Captain Jack Betrays Even His Close Friends
The Joker is usually seen as a loner, but his relationship with Harley Quinn and his occasional dealings and team-ups with other Bat rogues like Penguin, Two-Face, Catwoman and the Riddler, show that even a monster like Joker is capable of having friends, or at least acquaintances.
It may seem like Captain Jack is more capable of forming a bond of friendship than the Joker is, but since Captain Jack will turn on anyone to save his own hide or get ahead we know that that’s simply not the case. He has almost no regard for even his own crew and will abandon them on a whim. All he really cares about is his ship. Does he care about the crew on his ship? Not at all. He was even going to let his first mate, Joshamee Gibbs, hang. He did end up saving Gibbs, but that was a huge risk. Gibbs would have been killed if Jack’s plan didn’t work. He was willing to put the life of his longest and best friend at risk to get himself out of a jam.
11. Captain Jack Is Selfish And Never Thinks Of Others
There should be a picture of Jack Sparrow in the dictionary next to the word selfish. In reality, his few heroic deeds are mostly happenstance. When he looks like the good guy it’s because he is trying to save himself or improve his own situation.
That might make it seem like he’s doing good, but from an ethical standpoint, are you really helping others if it’s by accident? Captain Jack Sparrow has probably never done a genuinely good thing simply for the sake of doing good. Don’t be fooled by the seemingly good deeds he performs because they are not selfless acts in any sense of the word.
10. Captain Jack Sparrow Is Not Capable Of Love And Would Even Let Angelica Die
The Joker once had a wife that he loved, and even though he has an abusive and twisted relationship with Harley Quinn, he holds at least a small amount of reverence for her. The same can’t be said for Jack Sparrow and the women he has been with. He sees women as a way to satisfy his basest and most carnal desires, and that’s about it. Even the woman he supposedly loved meant nothing to him.
In Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides, it is revealed that Sparrow was once in a serious relationship with Blackbeard’s daughter Angelica, who was played by Penelope Cruz.
He was willing to let her die numerous times. First, he wasn’t certain which chalice was which when Blackbeard attempted to gain immortality at the Fountain of Youth. This could have easily resulted in Angelica dying. Secondly, he was willing to abandon her on a small island and leave her for dead just so he could get his ship back. The fact that he would do this to a woman he once supposedly loved is extremely disturbing.
9. Captain Jack Sparrow Only Wants Treasure And Is Quite Greedy
The Joker just wants to watch the world burn. Most interpretations of the character show that he doesn’t care about material possessions or wealth. In The Dark Knight he burned a huge pile of money (worth millions) just to send a message, and he was known for wearing handmade and cheap clothes.
Captain Jack Sparrow is the opposite of that. He basically only cares about material possessions and wealth, particularity his ship the Black Pearl, which he wants to get back so badly that he won’t let anyone get in his way. He cares so much about possessions that he is willing to betray and even kill others to get what he wants.
8. Captain Jack Sparrow Is A Complete Drunkard
Many people like to drink, but being an alcoholic with no desire to change is not an admirable quality. Jack Sparrow is almost always in a state of constant inebriation. He downs bottles of rum whenever he can get his hands of them, and maybe this is why he constantly acts the way he does. The Joker may be a homicidal maniac, but he is not addicted to alcohol and never even touches the stuff. In that way, Sparrow edges out Joker in terms of debauchery. Captain Jack Sparrow’s fondness for the drink may be why he does so much of the bad stuff he does. Maybe if his diet consisted of more than vast quantities of rum he wouldn’t be as bad of a person.
7. Captain Jack Is A Bigamist And A Cheater
Captain Jack Sparrow has been known to court more than one lady at a time, and because of his looks and charm most would write that off as him being nothing more than a dashing rogue, but when so many of his jilted lovers are disgusted by him and willing to slap him when he shows his face you really have to wonder if he has any respect for the fairer sex whatsoever. It is very likely that he was not only using women for sex, but seeing multiple women at a time without their knowledge means he would be a cheater. If they did know he was seeing other women then that would make him a bigamist, which is somehow even worse. Sure, it’s the 1700s, but that still doesn’t make it right.
6. Jack Sparrow Is Incredibly Sexist
Jack Sparrow is certainly not a feminist, and he treats women with no respect. He goes through girlfriends and lovers on almost a daily basis, but his sexism isn’t limited to leaving a trail of angry exes. It’s worse that that, because he would even hit on Elizabeth Swann. He sees just about every woman he meets as nothing more than an object. Sparrow gets away with his blatant sexism because of the time period he lives in and his charming demeanor.
Many of his interactions go well beyond simply flirting. His sexism is perhaps one of his most defining characteristics. The Joker may be sexist as well, based in the way he treats Harley Quinn, but because of sheer volume Jack Sparrow is much more sexist.
5. Jack Sparrow Is Constantly Trying To Stage Mutinies
It is common knowledge that very few pirates have any loyalty or respect, but they at least, based on what we know, they abide by the rules of the sea. Captain Jack Sparrow doesn’t care about rules like that. He wants to be a captain and always a captain. He is not capable of falling in line in any capacity, and anytime he finds himself not at the helm, he is willing to stage a mutiny to go from just another member of the crew back to captain. Sparrow has staged many mutinies in his life. Some were successful and some were not.
4. Jack Sparrow Might Be A Cannibal
At one point Captain Jack Sparrow was the leader of a cannibalistic tribe. When the savages turned on him he was willing to turn over his crew to the flesh eating hoard just to save his own skin, literally. But the question remains as to whether Jack Sparrow was a cannibal himself. If he was, then he is surely worse than the Joker. Jack Sparrow may have a lot of similarities with the Joker and commits many of the same heinous crimes, but perhaps he has a bit of Hannibal lector in him as well.
3. Jack Sparrow Would Even Agree To Make A Deal With The Devil
Jack Sparrow is bad to the bone, and when you mix in his affinity for the occult and supernatural, then things get even worse. It was bad enough that Sparrow would be willing to sacrifice the lives of 100 souls just to save his, but whom he was willing to make that deal with makes things even worse. It would be one thing if this deal was with any other run of the mill pirate, but he wasn’t just about to screw over so many others to just anybody. He was going to make a deal with Davy Jones, who is basically the Satan of the Pirates of the Caribbean universe. What’s worse is at least Davy Jones has a code of honor, and Jack doesn’t even have that. That means that Captain Jack Sparrow is actually worse than even the devil.
2. Captain Jack Barely Even Cares About His Own Family
Here’s where things really set the Joker and Jack Sparrow apart. The origin of the Joker, as told in the famous and influential graphic novel The Killing Joke, showed us that before his descent into madness the Joker was actually a struggling stand up comedian who had a wife he adored and a baby on the way. He was willing to commit a robbery at the Ace Chemical plant to support his family.
Unfortunately, his wife and unborn child were killed in a freak accident, and when this happened he spiraled into insanity and a life of crime when Batman knocked him into a vat of acid. It seems that Jack Sparrow was always dastardly and doesn’t even care for his own father Captain Teague, who was played by Keith Richards. Jack Sparrow has no sympathetic backstory like the Joker does. When Jack asks his father, Captain Teague, how his mother is doing, Teague shows Jack his own mother’s shrunken head and Jack barely even winces.
1. Captain Jack Sparrow Is Vain And Narcissistic
If Jack Sparrow catches a glimpse of himself in the mirror he would probably be quite impressed with what he saw. He may be a dirty pirate, but he does care about the way he looks – to a fault. Jack sparrow is constantly decked out in bling and baubles, and that is usually not the case with the Clown Prince of crime. The Joker from Suicide Squad, as played by Jared Leto, may wear flashy clothes and piles of gold chains, but this version of the Joker is so terrible and untrue to the comic book characterization of the Joker that it’s not really even the Joker at all. Joker usually wears a suit, but he doesn’t really care about his looks. In Scott Snyder’s Batman series, the Joker did not even struggle when the Dollmaker cut the Joker’s face clean off. That’s how little the Joker cares about his appearance. Sparrow of the other hand, would never care that little about the way he looks.
