Have you ever noticed that certain couples look eerily like brother and sister? It appears as though opposites don’t necessarily attract. Perhaps you and your significant other have even been accused of being siblings! If we look to Hollywood, many celeb couples also share very similar features. So, what is this all about? Various theories have emerged to explain this very peculiar phenomena, some of which are even backed by science. Some ideas are that:
We find our own genes more attractive; we are simply more attracted to people who look like ourselves.
We love familiarity (we tend to trust people who look more like us and find them more cooperative).
Some women are attracted to men who look similar to their own fathers (sexual imprinting).
So, if you happen to date someone who looks like you, does it actually mean anything? Some theories have suggested that couples who look like each other may have longer relationships because of a higher level of trust due to the familiarity of their faces. Other studies have found that those who look similar end up being happier. It is also interesting to see that people who have been together for decades (such as your grandparents) begin to look similar because of decades of shared experiences.
What do you make of all of this? Are you creeped out? Intrigued? Let us know.
15. John Krasinski and Emily Blunt
A couple that makes us get on a chair and loudly proclaim #relationshipgoals is none other than the ever-adorable John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, who look like they are the best of friends. We imagine that they spend every day laughing, having pillow fights, pranking each other and eating ice cream straight out of the tub, kind of like they live the life of a slumber party. The couple also happens to look kind of similar – definitely not as similar as other couples on this list, but we will take any opportunity to talk about these two. Okay, we admit it; they don’t look that much alike, but they do both have two eyes, a nose and both belong to the family of homo sapiens. The couple has been married since 2009, wedding only a year after they began dating. They now have two daughters. Get ready, everyone: Krasinski and Blunt are here to stay.
14. Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes
Initially, Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes may not look that similar. But a closer examination of their faces reveals some similarities in terms of their facial features. They both have eyes that are closer together as well as strong jawlines. We don’t know much about this couple other than the fact that they have been dating since 2011 after meeting on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines and now have two children. They are perhaps one of the most private couples in Hollywood. While Mendes specifically refuses to reveal any details about her relationship with Gosling, even going so far as to say that, “You can ask about my boyfriend. I just won’t answer,” Gosling, has opened up about his wife on a few occasions. He once said that, “I know I’m with the person I’m supposed to be with… There’s nothing else I’m looking for.” The couple seems like quite a solid pairing.
13. Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston
Taylor Swift may have finally found her match in Tom Hiddleston. Perhaps they were drawn to each other because of their similar facial features such as their square-shaped face and blue yes. When they wear the same pair of sunglasses, they look even more alike – some may say they look like twins! This particular pairing sparked a lot of controversy after everyone realized that she had only dumped poor Calvin Harris two weeks prior.
Swift has not said a word about her relationship, but Hiddleston, on the other hand, has said, “How best to put this? How best to put this? That notion is—look, the truth is that Taylor Swift and I are together, and we’re very happy. Thanks for asking. That’s the truth. It’s not a publicity stunt.” Despite being a mere summer romance thus far, the two have already met the parents and even made out on top of the Coliseum. There’s no telling what the pair will have accomplished by the end of fall.
12. Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively
New power couple Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively has everyone saying #relationshipgoals. In fact, they have shared their own romantic tale on so many occasions that they have been given the title of being the most in love couple in all of Hollywood. Although they aren’t as identical as others on this list, they do slightly resemble each other. They have thin faces and similar strong jawlines. The two have been going strong since 2011 after meeting on the set of the failed Green Lantern, but they didn’t officially announce they were together until 2012. In any case, the two now have a daughter together and are expecting another one soon.
So, what goes on behind this seemingly perfect relationship? Lively once said she was looking for a significant other who “can play Guitar Hero with me and sit at home and watch the Food Network and read magazines with me, that’s good. I don’t think there are many guys that’s fun for. It’s a lot to ask.” It would appear that Reynolds is that guy.
11. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi
Some say that Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi look like each other. We would agree that they look somewhat similar, particularly when de Rossi’s hair is cut short. Indeed, they do have the exact same face shape and similarly-shaped eyes. The couple has been together since 2004 and by the time the same-sex marriage ban in California was lifted, they became officially married in 2008. The couple seems to be in it for the long haul.
These two are often at the source of breakup rumours, but on the Howard Stern Radio Show, DeGeneres said that they are never even on the verge of breaking up, that they never fight and are actually “madly in love.” de Rossi has also spoken very highly of her wife; recently, she said that, “We’re just really good friends and we talk about everything, and we never ever, ever lie to each other, like, not even the tiniest lies… And she’s the only person I want to hang out with. Like, she is my best friend and I just want to be with her all the time.”
10. Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux
Every person who feared for Jennifer Aniston’s life after the highly publicized demise of her marriage to Brad Pitt – would she find someone to love her? Would she get married? – breathed a sigh of relief when she finally found a man. That man was Justin Theroux, whose most notable role is that of 2000’s American Psycho. He is also a director and a screenwriter. In any case, the two do resemble each other, or at least share several similar features: they both have big faces (we can’t say that in any more of a flattering way), similar noses and kind eyes.
The couple has been together since 2011 and officially tied the knot in 2015, three years after getting engaged. They kept their wedding top-secret, only inviting people at the last minute to an undisclosed “event.” No pictures were taken except for the ones by their wedding photographer. The couple has most recently sparked pregnancy rumours, despite Aniston’s piece in The Huffington Post in which she writes, “Here’s where I come out on this topic: we are complete with or without a mate, with or without a child. We get to decide for ourselves what is beautiful when it comes to our bodies.” The paparazzi has yet to read it.
9. Jessica Alba and Cash Warren
Jessica Alba and Cash Warren could kind of pass for brother sister – not twins, but definitely brother and sister with their dark hair, dark eyes, olive skin and same bright smile. They also have similar chins.
Alba and Warren have been together for a while now, at least for Hollywood standards. She met the film producer on the set of Fantastic Four and they began dating in 2005. Alba described it as a love at first type of situation, although she was dating someone else at the time. She said their relationship began as a friendship and that she was attracted to his “spirit and mind” before it eventually became more physical. They married in 2008. They have been together for 11 years now and have two daughters together. They maintain a relatively low profile compared to other celebs. Alba has shared her secret to her successful marriage, saying, “You know, I think we have an incredible amount of respect for each other and we value each other’s opinion and time, and I feel like we’re in it together, we’re not petty with each other, and we communicate a lot.”
8. Katy Perry and Russell Brand
The now departed celebrity couple Katy Perry and Russell Brand, could quite easily pass as brother and sister upon first glance; they have the same dark hair and middle part; they also have a very similar facial structure and similar lips. Of course, marrying someone that resembles a family member doesn’t necessarily guarantee relationship success as some studies have suggested. The marriage didn’t end well after Brand broke up with Perry via a text message, the aftermath that was documented in Katy Perry: Part of Me. In the recently released documentary about Brand, titled Brand: A Second Coming, Brand revealed some unflattering details about his relationship to Perry, saying, “I’m associated with the very thing I detest: vapid, vacuous, plastic, constructed, mindless celebrity. That’s the very sea we’re swimming in, “Oh, who’s he?” … “He’s married to Katy Perry.” In his defense, Brand was against the documentary airing in the first place (Perry was reportedly embarrassed, naturally). Perry, on the other hand, claimed that the relationship didn’t work out because of career scheduling issues and because she was not ready to have children. Perry has now to moved on to Brand’s twin, Orlando Bloom, who also bears striking similarities to Perry.
7. Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow
Back all the way in the 90s – 1994 to be exact – these two could have passed for twins. Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow had the exact same facial structure, strong jawline and even the exact same haircut. Whether the matching haircut was intentional or not, that we will never know.
Their highly-publicized three-year relationship didn’t pan out, despite an engagement. Paltrow officially ended things because, as she revealed many years later, she was too “young”. Indeed, Pitt was an entire ten years older than her when they began dating. Paltrow opened up recently about her relationship with Pitt on The Howard Stern Show. She said that, “I definitely fell in love with him. He was so gorgeous and sweet” and that Pitt was “too good for me.”
6. Adam Brody and Leighton Meester
It is quite easy to see that Adam Brody (the guy who had a lot to do with ushering in the popularization of the nerd as Seth Cohen on The OC) and Leighton Meester (known for her role as Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl) look quite similar. Like others on this list, they could also pass as brother and sister. Not only do they have the same dark colored eyes and dark hair, but a closer examination shows that the similarities do not end there. They also have a very similarly long face shape and similar chins. It appears that Brody may have a certain “type,” as Meester looks similar to his ex-girlfriend, Summer Roberts aka Rachel Bilson.
Like most other actors in the business, the two met on set. They are certainly not one of the most discussed Hollywood celebs and media has disclosed relatively little about them, meaning that their relationship timeline is somewhat unclear. However, it is thought that they began dating in 2013 and officially tied the knot in 2014. They also now have a child together. Interestingly, Meester was actually crushing on Brody well before the two even began dating! In other words, dreams do come true.
5. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson
It is not hard to see the resemblance between these two former, fateful lovers; in fact, they oddly resemble real-life vampires with their smoldering eyes, which is fitting given their history together in the Twilight saga. Their high-profile relationship was marked with a lot of controversy after Kristen Stewart had an affair with a director while shooting Snow White and the Huntsmen. Stewart has recently opened up about her relationship to Robert Pattinson, saying, “People wanted me and Rob together so badly that our relationship was turned into a product.” As of 2015, Stewart has since moved on to Alicia Cargile in an on-and-off again relationship. She has also been a lot more open about her girlfriend, saying, “I would never talk about any of my relationships before, but once I started dating girls it seemed like there was an opportunity to represent something really positive.” On her sexuality, which is an ever present media fascination, Stewart has said that “If you feel like you really want to define yourself, and you have the ability to articulate those parameters and that in itself defines you, then do it. But I am an actress, man. I live in the f**king ambiguity of this life and I love it. I don’t feel like it would be true for me to be like, ‘I’m coming out!'” In any case, this relationship throws a wrench into the idea that couples who look alike stay together.
4. Tom Brady & Gisele Bundchen
American quarterback Tom Brady and Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen have the exact same facial structure with their inverted triangular face shapes, the same chin and a similar jawline that many would be envious of. They even have the same square hairline!
The two began dating in 2006 after mutual friends said they were the exact same person. On meeting Brady, Bundchen described the experience as love at first sight, saying, “I knew right away — the first time I saw him. We met through a friend. The moment I saw him, he smiled and I was like, That is the most beautiful, charismatic smile I’ve ever seen!… From the first day we met, we’ve never spent one day without speaking to each other.”
The two were married by 2009; it took them an entire five years to finally reveal a wedding photo, which Bundchen shared on Instagram. The couple now has two children together, one of which is biological. In an interesting turn of events, Brady found out his ex-girlfriend was pregnant while he was dating Bundchen! In the end, though, the couple survived.
3. Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid
After the collapse of Courteney Cox and David Arquette‘s marriage in 2013 and the embarrassing Howard Stern interview where Arquette was clearly not over her, Cox eventually moved on to Johnny McDaid, a musician and member of the rock band, Snow Patrol, and 12 years her junior. The two have been engaged for two years. With their similar heart shaped faces, thin lips and light blue eyes, this is another couple that proves attraction to oneself is real. That might not necessarily be a bad thing, though, given that one study showed that people who have similar facial features tend to be happier together. Given that couples tend into morph into each other after decades of being together (perhaps because of shared experiences), it is likely that one day these two could quite easily be mistaken for twins. The couple did have a brief breakup in December 2015, meaning that perhaps the chances of them growing old together are not the greatest.
2. Homer and Marge Simpson
Everyone’s favourite TV couple (with the exception of George H. W. Bush, the older one, who once said that the Simpsons were the cause of society’s problems), Homer and Marge Simpson look eerily similar – so much so that if Homer were to put on a blue wig, he might just pass for Marge. They are both yellow, have the exact same oversized eyes, the exact same peanut-shaped head and gummy smile. They have been together since the 80s and are one celebrity couple who has survived documenting their lives. In fact, they have been on the television out of all the other TV couples.
They were wrought with divorce rumours in 2015 like many other celebrity couples, particularly that they were legally separating, which sent fans wild. However, it turned out to be untrue but aptly reflected our culture’s obsession with celebrity breakups. The couple currently has 3 children together. Indeed, this couple is proof that love lasts when you marry someone who looks like you.
1. LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian
They gained a lot of attention in the media in 2009 after it was revealed that they both had an affair after meeting on the set of Northern Lights. The two then left their respective former husband and wife and by 2011, they were married. It took an entire year after the initial affair for Rimes to make a public statement about the affair, but she said, “I take responsibility for everything I’ve done. I hate that people got hurt, but I don’t regret the outcome. Reality television show The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills has documented the effects that the affair had on Cibrian’s ex-wife, the outspoken Brandi Glanville, who doesn’t exactly think highly of her ex-husband’s new lover. However, in an unexpected turn of events, LeeAnn and Glanville may have put the past behind them as various reports have detailed friendly exchanges on Twitter, with Glanville even wishing the couple happy anniversary.
