Have you ever run into a celebrity in the streets and been in total shock over their height? How can you, an average person, be taller than a big time movie star or singer? They say to never meet your heroes, and they say it for a reason.
Once you see a celebrity on the big screen, your view of them can change; they are, after all, just normal people put on a pedestal. Celebrities are often made to look taller than they are in movies and music videos. They use optical tricks such as depth placement or wardrobe alterations to meet certain ‘standards’ that the industry has for them, even going as far as making short male leads appear lengthier than their tall female co-stars.
When the average height for a man in the United States is 5’10” and 5’4” for a woman, it is undeniable that celebrities will fall short of these expectations. Despite the guidelines society has set for famous people, talent is talent and cannot be diminished by size.
15. Jack Black – 5’6”
Jack Black is known for many things besides being hilarious. At 5’6” he manages to have the voice of a giant and bellows his love for music by creating his own peculiar genre, which he clearly articulates in his band Tenacious D. But Black does not stop there — he acts, sings and is the man behind 2008’s Kung Fu Panda. Black has often sought after films that portray him as a sloppy slack artist, much like his roles in Orange County and School of Rock. By the amount of movies he’s played in, this little guy is far from lazy.
14. Hayden Panettiere – 5’
Standing at 5 feet tall, Hayden Panettiere is living proof that good things come in small packages. Most commonly known for her role as Claire Bennet in the TV series Heroes, Panettiere assumes the role of a teenage cheerleader who has the power to rapidly regenerate her cells. So, for example, if her legs were cut off, she could grow a new pair. Unfortunately for her, they would grow back the same height. Hayden Panettiere has been in the acting scene since she was less than one year old, and she hasn’t grown much since.
13. Robert Downey Jr. – 5’8.5”
Robert Downey Jr., an actor so great and respected that he has lasted over 4 decades in the movie business, always manages to stay fresh and hilarious in any movie he is cast in. Like in 2008, when he was cast as Marvel Comics hero Tony Stark in the movie Iron Man. Downey plays this role so effortlessly that he appears to be as tall as a skyscraper, but in fact he stands at 5’8.5”. Knowing this, we as average people think, “How can a man so strong and courageous be anything shorter than average?” Well, he just is. No matter his height, he’s the man. Deal with it.
12. Kristen Bell – 5’1”
Kristen Bell has been fighting to reach the limelight ever since she was a young child. She finally acquired her big break at age 24 in the 2004 TV series Veronica Mars, where she played the menacing role of a high school self-made detective. At the intimidating height of 5’1”, Bell terrorizes her pupils and fights crime with knowledge, giving a whole new meaning to the saying ‘Why don’t you pick on someone your own size?’ She then set her sights even higher when she co-starred alongside 6’4” actor Jason Segel in 2008’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall, where she also finds a way to make a big impact on someone’s life despite her small physique. You go, you little minx.
11. Josh Hutcherson – 5’7”
Josh Hutcherson knew he wanted to become an actor since he was 9 years old. His drive was so strong that his family eventually decided to move to Los Angeles so he could pursue acting. In 2002, Hutcherson landed his first role in a TV film called House Blend, and although his career continued in an upwards slope, his height did not. At 5’7” Hutcherson’s acting career took its biggest leap when he was cast as the brave Peeta Mellark in 2012’s The Hunger Games, where he portrayed true selflessness, devotion and love towards his co-star Jennifer Lawrence’s character. Hutcherson’s character is enamoured by Lawrence’s so much that he seems to look up to her, but can you blame him? She is, after all, 2 inches taller (without heels).
10. Lady Gaga – 5’1”
Lady Gaga has become iconic throughout her career. She is known for her eccentric personality and outrageous fashion styles, as well as her influential success in the music industry. However, behind all her success hides a very down to earth person, and when I say down to earth I mean only 5’1” above it. Yes, that’s right: behind this 6 time Grammy Award Winner is a small woman balancing on stilts.
9. Jackie Chan – 5’8”
Jackie Chan has irrefutably made himself into a martial arts master who would be feared in combat by any man taller than him. This leaves a lot of leeway, for he is below the average height in America (at 5’8”). Chan has become reputable for his stunts and movies, commonly known for his lead roles in the Rush Hour trilogies and Shanghai Noon, but we cannot pigeonhole this black belt into a particular skill set. Chan can do anything from being a serious Tae Kwon Do master to a hilarious actor.
8. Shakira – 5’6”
Shakira’s hips might not lie, but her heels sure do. Standing at a whopping 5’2”, this little Colombian beauty manages to trick our eyes and minds with her hypnotizing hips. But hey, I’m not complaining. In 2006, Shakira and Beyonce came out with a video for their song “Beautiful Liar”; in it, both artists are singing and dancing, but never next to each other. ‘Why?’ you might ask: well, because of their height difference, of course! Beyonce measures 5’6”, and is usually in the back of the video or in a different shot altogether. If they were standing next to each other at any point, Beyonce would look like a giant and Shakira a hobbit.
7. Kit Harington – 5’8″
Kit Harington’s handsome facial features and long curly black hair has stolen the hearts of women all around the world, unhampered by his below average height of 5’8″. His hair might be his greatest trademark, but did you know that Harington actually wore a wig while filming the first season of HBO’s Game of Thrones? Unfortunately the wig gave him no extra height, and by season two of “GOT”, he grew out his own locks. Harington’s love for theatre started at the age of 14 when he saw Waiting for Godot for the first time. This play greatly influenced his desire to act, and although Harington is most commonly known for his role as Jon Snow on Game of Thrones, he will always consider himself a theatre trained actor.
6. Lucy Liu – 5’3”
We all know Lucy Liu as a fiercely deadly beauty who can smile innocently before she kicks you in the face. Her versatility as an actor is clearly demonstrated when she takes on vastly different roles, like 2000’s Charlie’s Angels as a hero and then 2003’s Kill Bill: Volume 1 as a villain. But what the sneaky Liu keeps incognito is that she does all this at the trembling height of 5’3”, making her the smallest female badass I’ve yet to see.
5. Usher – 5’7.5”
Usher’s voice and dance moves have been bringing women to their knees ever since his great debut in 2001 with his hit song “U Remind Me”. Usher is known for his suaveness and talent in R&B, but there are two things he is not known for: his last name (which is Raymond?) and his height (5’7.5”). But being considered below average does nothing to Usher’s pride and confidence — instead, what he lacks in height he gains in charm and soulfulness.
4. Kim Kardashian – 5’2”
What more is there to say about Kim Kardashian? At the alarming height of 5’2”, she is the living representation of a big booty on feet – one who has swept the nation with her talents of (wait for it): marrying celebrities. Let’s not be too mean, though – she did co-star in that video with Ray J and has managed to do well in her hit TV reality show Keeping up with the Kardashians.
3. Dave Franco – 5’7”
Dave Franco is most commonly known for being James Franco’s little brother and, despite his triumphs and efforts in the acting world, at 5’7” Franco has mostly lived in his older brother’s taller shadow. Franco has been acting since 2006, only to start getting recognized in 2012’s 21 Jump Street. But true passion never dies, and Franco has climbed the fame ladder at his unique pace, co-starring in movies such as Warm Bodies. and winning the MTV Movie Award for Best Duo with actor Zac Efron in 2014’s Neighbours. Franco is definitely making his way higher up the ladder. Keep on climbing, shorty!
2. Amy Poehler – 5’2”
Amy Poehler might be the funniest little female comedian yet, and when she does stand up comedy she does it at the proud height of 5’2”. Poehler’s career sprouted when she demonstrated her clear outrageousness and wit in 2001 on Saturday Night Live. It is to no surprise that by the end of her first year on SNL, she was made a regularly featured performer. Poelher continued to grow (metaphorically), teaming up with Tina Fey in 2004 to co-anchor SNL’s Weekend Update. Poehler’s unique style of impersonations and comedy eventually land her a starring role in 2009’s “Parks and Recreations”. Keep it going, shorty!
1. Daniel Radcliffe – 5’5”
Daniel Radcliffe is most known for his role as Harry Potter in all 8 of the Harry Potter movies. Radcliffe began filming for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone when he was just 11 years old and, despite his continuous growth as an actor, his height almost remained the same. At 5’5”, Radcliffe is the boy who could not see above the counter. He co-stars with actors Rupert Grint and Emma Watson throughout the entire Harry Potter series. At the end of every day, the great wizard Harry Potter is the shortest amongst the three.
