Hollywood has always had a double standard when it came to women, since it is standard practice for women of a particular age to be ousted from the entertainment industry. While men can receive job opportunities well beyond their prime years, women are passed over for the next “It” girl as soon as the emergence of their first wrinkle. Because of this, more and more Hollywood starlets have turned to plastic surgery to try and stave off the aging process. This has resulted in some of the worst facial demolitions to the entertainment industry’s most favorite starlets, which was probably more detrimental than if they would have just let Father Time perform his duties unhindered.
For the women that have been able to steer clear of the pressure of plastic surgery, the aging process has been even more shocking to the public. Ten years doesn’t seem like much when considering all of the movies and television shows that were released back in the early 2000s (which seems like just yesterday), but it has made a huge difference to the look of some of the world’s hottest starlets. While once considered ultra desirable and at the top of their game, a short ten years later and some are almost unrecognizable. Not only do they no longer look like their former sexy selves, but many are pretty much unemployable by Hollywood standards. Check out our list of the 15 celebrities that went from hot to not in a span of just 10 years, and see how quickly Father Time has altered some of our favorite Hollywood stars.
15. Kirstie Alley
Kirstie Alley is an actress that has had quite a substantial career in both television and film. From her role on the hit television series, Cheers, to the string of hit films in the ’80s and ’90s, Alley has had great success in the public eye. However, she has equally come under an intense amount of scrutiny due to her fluctuating weight. Ten years ago, she proved to the world that she still had it by taking it all off on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Debuting a monumental weight loss, she strut her stuff in a purple bikini (or bra and panty set, whatever it was) to show off her new weight loss endorsement. While she managed to keep the weight off for a time, she ultimately gained back much of the weight. She was thrust back into the spotlight when she became a contestant on Dancing with the Stars, but fans couldn’t help but notice that the years had not been friendly to her. From a bulbous nose to the overly tight facial features, it wasn’t just her ballooning weight that caused her to lose her hot factor.
14. Michelle Williams
When the world first became introduced to Michelle Williams, she was the third addition to the hugely successful R&B group, Destiny’s Child. The group had been through some tumultuous times, including some member changes, but Williams solidified her position in the group in the 2000s. She was the most soulful of all the women, and proved that by going on to stand out as a gospel singer. However, recent years has shown that not everyone can gracefully grow into themselves as they age. While other celebrities have been criticized for their weight gain, Williams has actually been criticized for her incredible weight loss. For a woman that was known for singing songs like “Bootylicious,” it’s ironic that she would drastically change into a woman that has caused some to wonder about her eating habits. While she was once hailed for her youthful and healthy look, she now looks almost skeletal in her body transformation.
13. Tara Reid
Back when Tara Reid was at the height of her popularity as a film actress in the ‘90s, the public loved her fresh-faced look and girl-next-door persona. She was able to continue her film career in the early 2000s, but along with her increased fame came an increased amount of partying. She was continuously photographed stumbling out of nightclubs and even had some huge snafus on the red carpet. A number of plastic surgery flubs were documented in the headlines, including a nip slip that showed a botched breast job. In recent years, her biggest claim to fame has been a small role in the Sharknado film series (which isn’t much to brag about). On top of her failing career, the years of hard partying has caught up with her face in a major way. She looks far older than her 40 years, and looks more like a hard 50-year-old.
12. Mischa Barton
Mischa Barton had a hugely successful career early on, with a variety of different platforms. From soap acting to stage performances to Nickelodeon, it doesn’t seem like there’s much she hasn’t dabbled in. Yet, she is probably best remembered for her portrayal as Marissa Cooper on The O.C., the Fox series that ran from 2003 to 2006. However, her character didn’t last for the entirety of the series and like many other child actresses, Barton became better known for her partying ways than her acting skills. After being plastered in the tabloids for her over the top partying, she seemed to vanish from the public eye for a time. However, her reemergence was even more shocking, since she had gained a shocking amount of weight. In 2015, she started to lose the bulk of her weight gain, but she still didn’t look anything close to her former self. Nowadays, she no longer looks like the fresh-faced girl from Orange County, and instead looks like just another aging starlet looking for a comeback.
11. Lindsay Lohan
When Lindsay Lohan first started out as a child actress, she was the super adorable freckle-faced girl from the Parent Trap remake. The public was in admiration of her acting ability, and were overjoyed to see it translate well as she transitioned as an older actress. Her portrayal in Mean Girls was equally celebrated, and people even embraced her attempt at a singing career. In 2006, she had already released a few studio albums, which were actually received pretty well. While there was some chatter about her poor work ethic and even some substance abuse issues, the world was still hopeful that everything would turn out well in the end. She was seen on the red carpet looking stunningly beautiful, and changed around her hair color a few times to get away from the orangish red tone from her youth. Nowadays, it’s difficult to think about on the glory days of Lindsay Lohan, since there has been so much drama to muddy the waters. At 30-years-old, she now looks practically 40 from all the years of hard partying, and it’s noticeable that her faced has been tweaked with a bit.
10. Cameron Diaz
Back in 2006, Cameron Diaz had fully solidified herself as one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood. While Something About Mary had already ingratiated her into the hearts of the public, it was her portrayal in the Charlie’s Angels films that truly amped up the likability factor. She was dating some of the hottest men in Hollywood, and even played around a few times with her hair color to create a more distinctive look for herself. Yet, as the years rolled through, so did the look of aging across her face. Diaz became a published author and spoke out publicly about the effects of aging on the body, but in recent years people are starting to talk more about her face. The wide mouth grin that used to be so appealing has become more like a joker’s grin, and all those years frolicking on the beach didn’t do much to help stave off the deep wrinkles set around her eyes and forehead. Perhaps it’s a little strange for the public to criticize a starlet for actually looking like her age, but it seems that regardless if its overly done plastic surgery or overly prominent wrinkles, the world will always have something to say.
9. Jennifer Aniston
While Jennifer Aniston may not have ever been as beautiful as Megan Fox, she certainly had a particular appeal. Whether it was her beautifully glossy hair or just the likability factor because of her hugely popular Rachel Green character on Friends, the world seemed to overlook the fact that she wasn’t classically beautiful in the least. Aniston was able to transition onto the big screen, and has had quite a successful career as a film actress. Yet, she hasn’t reached the same success as some of her fellow Academy Award winning actresses like Angelina Jolie. The closest she has come close was in her most recent portrayal in Cake, where she tried to go the route of Charlize Theron in tampering down her looks in an effort to be taken seriously as an actress. However, it didn’t work for her, so it seems she has gone back to trying to be as beautiful as some of her peers. In this effort, she has tweaked something in her face that has given it a “pillow face” look that is far from attractive.
8. Renee Zellweger
Not all actresses fit the Hollywood mold in regards to the standard of beauty, and age is known to affect a person’s looks as they grow older. While Renee Zellweger started off as another blonde actress in Hollywood trying to make a name for herself in the ‘90s, she quickly became celebrated for being an odd beauty with the ability to draw in the audience. From her breakout performance in Jerry Maguire to the hugely popular Bridget Jones’s Diary film series, the public fell in love with her quirky look and out of the norm Hollywood look. Rather than embracing her quirks like the rest of the world did, she chose to fight the aging process by turning to plastic surgery. Rather than tweaking a few wrinkles here and there, she has made headlines for how drastically she changed her face. Not only does she look completely different, but some have compared her facial features to that of “Hatchet face” rather than Bridget Jones.
7. Courteney Cox
While Jennifer Aniston has been thrust into the spotlight due to her thriving film career and tumultuous relationships, Courteney Cox is yet another standout actress that came from the hit television series, Friends. Although she went on to star in a number of films, including the blockbuster Scream series, she is best known for her role as Monica Geller. While she had success on the big screen, it was nothing compared to her success on television, which is probably why she returned to TV for Cougar Town and Dirt. The Friends series concluded in 2004, and in 2006 Cox was still being hounded by the paparazzi at every turn. Photographs from 2006 showed Cox was starting to display some signs of aging. Yet, a little crow’s feet and lines around the mouth weren’t much to fret about, and the public seemed to like how she was embracing getting older. All that changed within the ten years following, since she started to play around with different procedures and no longer looks like the Monica we all remember from Friends.
6. Meg Ryan
Meg Ryan has been in a number of films throughout her acting career, and has had the astounding luck to have been in some of the most iconic films in history. From When Harry Met Sally to Sleepless in Seattle, she quickly gained the title of “America’s Sweetheart” because of her stellar ability to win over audiences in classic romantic comedies on the big screen. She has also proven that she has range as an actress, since her portrayal in Proof of Life was met favorably by critics and she even was able to pull off her ultra serious character in the 1996 film, Courage Under Fire. With fans and critics alike both revering Meg Ryan, it seemed that there was nothing that she could do to lose their esteem. In 2006, the public could see that she was starting to age, and was also beginning to dabble into a few little fixes here and there with plastic surgery. Yet, no one could have predicted how far she would take it. Nowadays, she is practically blackballed by Hollywood due to her changed face and the fact that she has definitely not aged gracefully.
5. Kristen Stewart
While most people mostly remember Kristen Stewart for her role as Bella Swan in the Twilight series, in actuality, she started her acting career much earlier in life. Her first motion picture was released in 2001, but it was her 2002 Panic Room film that was the true breakout moment. Yet, she was still really young, and played the daughter of the main star, Jodie Foster. In 2006, Stewart was starting to come into her own as more than a child actress, and starred in a number of films that were creating the kind of buzz that landed her the Twilight role. Since then, she went through a highly publicized breakup with her costar, Robert Pattinson, and an even messier affair with her director, Rupert Sanders. Just as her persona dwindled in popularity by the public eye, so did her stylish good looks. The short and cheaply dyed hairstyle looks nothing like her formerly glamorous self, and her makeup choices are no longer being hailed by her adoring fans.
4. Pamela Anderson
When Pamela Anderson was first introduced to mainstream audiences through her iconic portrayal in Baywatch, the public couldn’t get over how phenomenally beautiful this Barbie lookalike was. While some remembered her from her small part in the television series, Home Improvement, things truly started to explode for her once she started running down the beach in her red lifeguard swimsuit. She was also highlighted in Playboy, and was even the Playmate of the Month in February of 1990. In 2006, Anderson had still maintained the same iconic beauty status from her Barbwire days, and was even inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame. She made a few appearances on The Girls Next Door, and was a definite favorite of Hugh Hefner. Yet, her face has made some significant changes in recent years. She did make a drastic change to her hairstyle, debuting a shorter look, which many felt was a much more age-appropriate style. However, she didn’t coordinate with her makeup. Still trying to pull off the same overly done makeup from her youth, she is starting to look more like Baby Jane rather than Barbie doll.
3. Sarah Jessica Parker
While Sarah Jessica Parker is a beloved TV and film star, she doesn’t exactly fit the mold of a typical Hollywood beauty. She has become known as a style icon due to her Carrie character from Sex and the City and her many best dressed moments on the red carpet, but she has always been defined as an odd beauty due to some of her prominent facial features. In 2006, she had already finished up the entire HBO Sex and the City series, and was embarking on a number of other projects on the big screen. There was a lot of chatter about the first Sex and the City movie, and she was a hot commodity in Hollywood. However, what was once an odd beauty quickly turned into a bit of a mess. The facial features that were always prominent became a bit overwhelming due to the proportional differences in her face. Also, there seems to be a bit of nip, tuck, or injectables going on in her face. While she is still recognizable, she definitely doesn’t look like the Carrie the world remembers.
Back in 2006, Madonna was photographed outside of the Vanity Fair Oscar Party looking absolutely stunning. People couldn’t get over how youthful she looked, and how well she had maintained her sexy status over the years. While she still pushed the envelope with provocative clothing, it seemed like just another pop star rather than the old lady trying to recapture her youth. Nowadays, the scantily clad ensembles have definitely taken on a new meaning, since age has not been friendly to our favorite “Material Girl.” In the past 10 years, the paparazzi have been brutal in following Madonna’s downfall from her former glory. Pictures of her wrinkled hands definitely gave away her true age, and there has been a lot of chatter over what plastic surgery she may or may not have had. From tightened eyes to puffed out cheek bones, there has definitely been some changes to her signature look. Yet, the photos that leaked with Madonna looking au natural were even more disturbing.
1. Demi Moore
Back in 2006, Demi Moore was the toast of the town with a reemergence in the film world and a hot young boyfriend on her arm. While she was definitely considered one of the world’s hottest film stars in such hits like Indecent Proposal and Ghost, there was a good amount of time that passed with the world starting to forget about this short-haired beauty. Her 2003 portrayal in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle showed her emerging with a brand new long-haired look, and better looking than ever. The public could instantly see what Ashton Kutcher saw in her, even though she was 15 years his senior. However, just as their relationship didn’t last, neither did her youthful good looks. Recently, Moore stepped out with a more age-appropriate look, including grey hair. While grey hair has become trendy in recent years, Moore proved that not everyone could pull it off without looking like an old lady. Rather than looking steel grey with a trendy style, Moore looked like a straggly grey-haired lady that no longer cares about looking young.
