There are some celebrities that seem like they’re stuck in a time warp because of the lack of change in their look. From Lisa Rinna keeping the same hairstyle for twenty years to Brooke Hogan keeping the bleach blonde look she donned when starting her failed music career, some stars just can’t seem to evolve with the times.
Just like everyone else, celebrities can also be guilty of being stuck in a rut. While it can be tempting to stick to the same look when it’s worked so well in the past, it’s inevitable that certain trends and fashion choices will go out of style. There have been some starlets that have been able to successfully change with the times, but not everyone is as savvy or fashion forward as a Beyonce.
Instead, some celebrity hotties have sought to shed their former selves to reinvent themselves in the eyes of the public. Whether it’s to gain newer and better roles in Hollywood or just to appear more mature than their much younger selves, it’s incredible how much of a difference a few years can make.
While Hollywood is infamous for pushing out aging actresses once they start to wrinkle, some have been able to beat the odds and have had a remarkable career despite their age. Yet it would be difficult to distinguish their current look from when they first started out in acting. Some of those who have changed, however drastic, have actually been for the better, but many haven’t been as lucky. From plastic surgery mishaps and speculations to a completely different public persona, check out our list of 15 celebrity hotties that are virtually unrecognizable from when they started out.
15. Kim Kardashian
When Kim Kardashian first entered the social scene in Hollywood she was just another hanger-on at the side of socialite Paris Hilton. Kardashian was seen on the red carpet and celebrity events, but only as the friend/employee of Hilton. It wasn’t until the infamous sex tape that Kardashian started on the journey to achieve fame all on her own. When the first episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians first aired in 2007, she seemed a little tweaked from when she was photographed on the red carpet alongside Paris Hilton. Yet, over the years she seems to have changed drastically in her look. Constantly battling rumors over her enhanced derriere and speculation over more than just Botox on her face, comparing side-by-side photos of an earlier version of Kim Kardashian has the public wondering what exactly she may have done to alter her look. She has consistently stated that her buttocks are natural and her facial features are only enhanced by expert makeup contouring, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult to believe.
14. Nicole Richie
When Nicole Richie was first introduced to television audiences on the Fox show, The Simple Life, she had already made a name for herself in the social scene of Hollywood. Known for being the daughter of Lionel Richie, she had already made her way in front of paparazzi cameras at red carpet events. During her time on The Simple Life, Richie was considerably bigger than her socialite bestie, Paris Hilton. She appeared portly, short, and far from sophisticated in her style. Her long scraggly hair was filled with ill-suiting highlights, her makeup looked clown-like in its application, and her outfit choices were right out of the “what not to wear” columns in all the tabloid magazines. Nowadays, Richie has become somewhat of a style icon and has even helped to mentor designer hopefuls on Project Runway. She has shed a considerable amount of weight, and looks almost skeletal in comparison. While there is still a resemblance to her former self, the differences are pretty shocking. She now looks more like a close relation rather than just a few years older from her The Simple Life days.
13. Janet Jackson
Janet Jackson was first introduced to audiences when she appeared as a child actress in the 1980’s hits, Good Times and Fame. Jackson looked like the picture of innocence and sweetness with chocolate brown skin and a cute button nose. Yet her look changed drastically over the years. Once she entered the music industry, Jackson changed her appearance to look far from the girl-next-door we used to know. Releasing hits like, “Anytime, Anyplace,” and starring alongside Tupac in Poetic Justice, Jackson changed much more than just her physical appearance over the years. Yet, the drastic changes to her facial features have made people wonder if it was more than just the natural progression of growing up that has changed this once Good Times actress. From eyelids that seem pulled back beyond recognition to a narrowed nose that makes triangles from the nostrils, Jackson looks far different from her younger self.
12. Abigail Breslin
Abigail Breslin was first introduced as a budding film actress when she starred alongside Mel Gibson in the 2002 film, Signs. Yet, it wasn’t until her portrayal as Olive Hoover in Little Miss Sunshine that she truly had her breakout moment as a formidable child actress. The premise of the film had a number of underlying themes, surrounding complex family dynamics and body image hang-ups that affect girls at an astounding early age. Breslin was the perfect fit to play such a role since her infectious scream and smile just made her even more endearing, despite not fitting the mold of what a budding actress should look like. Nowadays, Breslin has shed the look of that little girl, and appears all grown up in her latest role in TV’s Scream Queens. Far from that cute little face from Little Miss Sunshine, she looks more like a future porn star whenever she’s seen on the red carpet. With an ample bosom to the pouty red lips, Breslin is virtually unrecognizable from her early start on screen.
11. Jeana Keough
Jeana Tomasino was a model and actress when she first posed nude for Playboy magazine. She was named Playmate of the Month in November in 1980, and was a favorite video vixen for ZZ Top. She was married to former major league baseball player, Matt Keough, and the two had three children together. The dynamic of their marriage and relationship with their children was highlighted when she was cast on the first season of The Real Housewives of Orange County. The pending separation between her and Keough was predicted within a few episodes of the series, so the most shocking aspect of her appearance as a housewife was the fact that she looked shockingly different than her earlier years. Pictures from her glory days were strewn all over the house and former Playboy photos were shown onscreen to show audiences what she once looked like. Gone are the days of the Playmate body and even her facial features seem to have been hardened over the years. While she has made great strides in revamping her look and losing some of the extra pounds she gained over the years, she still is unrecognizable compared to her former Playboy days.
10. Jennifer Lawrence
Long before Jennifer Lawrence became an Oscar winner for her portrayal in Silver Linings Playbook, she was just a budding actress on the TV show, The Bill Engvall Show. While the show had moderately good ratings, it wasn’t as well known as other family sitcom shows. This may have actually been a good thing for Lawrence, since it allowed her to get much-needed experience as an actress but it didn’t stifle her in continuing on to the big screen. Nowadays, her look is that of a movie megastar, and she has even landed some pretty lucrative endorsement deals with some of the hottest fashion designers in the world. Becoming the muse for Dior, she is often seen on the red carpet wearing couture gowns and dripping with diamonds. This is a far cry from her earlier years when she looked like just another girl-next-door, but that is what money and fame can do to a budding starlet. Obviously, the world seems to like the new and improved Lawrence better than her teenage awkward years on TV, but it’s interesting to see such a drastic change in such a short amount of time.
9. Brigitte Bardot
Brigitte Bardot is a former model, actress, and singer that is now most noted for her work as an activist. Becoming famous in her heyday of the ’50s and ’60s, Bardot represented herself as an almost unattainable beauty. From the flowing blonde locks to the pouty lips, she starred in a number of films that were quick to publish movie posters with her likeness to draw in viewers. Looking back on her facial features and ultra-feminine physique, it would seem impossible that she would one day look anything but drop dead gorgeous. Nowadays, the Brigitte Bardot name is thought of among some of the most beautiful women in the world like Marilyn Monroe. Yet, unlike Marilyn, Bardot lived to see what she would look like in her later years of life. While it was inevitable that she would lose the ultra-toned face from her youth, no one could anticipate how hard the years would actually be on her. While Raquel Welch and Sophia Loren have still managed to hold on to their looks, Bardot was among the unlucky in her physical appearance.
8. Melanie Griffith
Melanie Griffith was a prominent film star in the ’80s, and was known for her killer good looks and stellar body. Films like the 1988 hit, Working Girl loved to show off her feminine curves and naturally beautiful facial features. In the ’90s, Griffith continued to get roles on the silver screen, and was an unapologetic cougar on the red carpet. While she and Antonio Banderas were once thought of as Hollywood’s most attractive couple, Griffith’s constant need for plastic surgery seemed to be more of a focus of talk among paparazzi in her later years. Rather than talk focusing on how great it was that she nabbed the good looking younger man, it became focused on what Banderas was doing with Griffith in the first place. The two eventually split, and now Griffith looks even more deformed than she did a few years back. There is no talk of any future plans to return to plastic surgery for Griffith, and that is probably a good thing – the damage has already been done.
7. Meg Ryan
Meg Ryan is another actress that has a long and successful history in the film industry, but it was her portrayal in When Harry Met Sally that seemed to be her biggest breakout role. Audiences fell in love with her out-for-love character, and she solidified her status as the go-to actress for a comedy/romance film. By starring in a number of hit romance films like Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, it seemed that she would become a film icon. Ryan didn’t seem to be pigeonholed in one particular category of film, and went on to star in other genres in film like Proof of Life and Courage Under Fire. Despite having huge success in film, Ryan decided to do a bit of meddling with plastic surgery and obviously went one too many times to the doctor’s office. She now is pretty much blackballed by Hollywood casting agents, since she has alienated her look beyond recognition.
6. Uma Thurman
Uma Thurman started off her career as an actress and model, and was first introduced to audiences in the late ’80s for her portrayal in Dangerous Liaisons. While she may have started off with the fresh-faced look of a young beauty, her role in Pulp Fiction proved that she could transform herself on the silver screen. Yet time has not been friendly to Thurman in recent years, and she has become another casualty of the war against aging for females in Hollywood. In an obvious attempt to stave off the signs of aging, Thurman now looks like just another cautionary tale as to why women shouldn’t put too much trust in the hands of their plastic surgeon. Not only does she no longer have the same look from her earlier days on film, but it seems impossible for her to ever again get another leading lady role on the big screen.
5. Cybill Shepherd
Cybill Shepherd first started as a breakout star when she starred in a number of films in the ’70s. As a former model, many of her roles depended on her stellar good looks and her characters were dependent on her physical appearance. In the ’80s she continued her public persona as an onscreen beauty in the hit television series, Moonlighting, and again in the ’90s in Cybill. Yet things started to go downhill after that, and she soon landed herself in the category of aging beauties that couldn’t hold on to their looks. In an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Shepherd spoke about how difficult it was for her to transition into her now more aged look, something that Hollywood starlets don’t often like to speak about. Shepherd really opened up about how hard it was for her to no longer be thought of as beautiful in the entertainment industry. Turning to plastic surgery, Shepherd now looks almost alien-like with all the skin that is being pulled this way and that way on her once young and fresh-looking face.
4. Kylie Jenner
Kylie Jenner was first introduced to the public as the younger sibling on the reality show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians. She was just one of the two siblings on the Jenner side of the family, and therefore wasn’t a huge part of the storyline in the early years. She seemed more like everyone’s pesky younger sister, rather than another would-be hottie in the Kardashian clan. Yet fans of the show were privy to seeing Jenner grow up in front of the cameras nonetheless. As her sister, Kendall, grew up to be a budding supermodel, Kylie didn’t seem to have the same look to follow her onto the runway. Instead, she went a completely different route in making her own name for herself. Multiple alleged bouts of plastic surgery and a few questionable fashion choices later, and she now looks far more like her Kardashian half-siblings. Not only has she shed her cute little freckles, but she seems to have grown a different pair of lips.
3. Maggie Smith
Dame Maggie Smith is an actress that has become the gold standard to many starlets in Hollywood. While some actresses are trying every plastic surgery trick in the book to try and stave off the look of aging, others are fully embracing their wrinkles in the hope of becoming the next Maggie Smith. Taking on roles like Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films and the Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey, there is no one else that could have played those roles without the look of the aged Maggie Smith. Undoubtedly, there will be future roles that will call for a much older actress, but it’s the grey area in between that has many Hollywood starlets turning to plastic surgery. While the world has become accustomed to Dame Maggie Smith’s look from the Harry Potter film series, it can be difficult to picture what she must have looked like in her youth. Yet Smith has actually had a long acting career, including the above photo that was taken in 1976 in the film, Murder by Death.
2. Betty White
Depending on what generation you reside in, Betty White will inevitably stay in your mind as a particular character. Whether it was her hit show, Hot in Cleveland, or as Rose Nylund in The Golden Girls, White is one of those rare actresses that still manages to find work in the entertainment industry regardless of her age. Yet she wasn’t an actress that rose to fame when she was already late in life. White has actually had a long professional career in Hollywood, and even was given the honorary title of Mayor of Hollywood in 1955. It seems that each new era came with a Betty White staple television show, whether it was her many appearances on American game shows to her role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. While she has become best known as the cute little white-haired woman that looks like everyone’s grandmother, she was once quite beautiful in her youth.
1. Helena Bonham Carter
Helena Bonham Carter is known for taking on films with outlandish characters. She has made a name for herself with over-the-top characters like the Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland to Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter film series. Carter seems to lean towards the roles that heavily disguise her appearance, and the world has become accustomed to seeing her in these types of character portrayals. Yet there have been some roles taken on earlier in her career that let her true beauty shine through. In 1985, Carter played the lead role in the British romance film, A Room with a View. Based on the novel by E. M. Forster, there have been numerous adaptations put onscreen, but it’s the 1985 version that Carter showed herself for the beauty she was. Looking similar to Selena Gomez, Carter had a baby-faced look with pouty lips that make it hard to even recognize her for the actress she has become.
