When it comes to celebrity couples, there are usually two things people are most interested in. The first thing people like to see is a lasting famous couple, a couple who has shown that not all celebrity relationships end in disaster. We like to imagine that, because these couples have stayed together within the crazy world of Hollywood, they must be better people than the others. The second thing that people look for in celebrity couples is exactly the opposite of the first thing. We love hearing about the disastrous relationships. It makes us feel better about ourselves. For many of us, it shows us that we’re better at something than celebrities. Hah! You can’t even stay married for longer than a year.
Well, even though there are plenty of relationships on this list of the first kind, the power couples who stuck it out, the pairs on this list give us a third category which is as interesting as the other two. Not only have these couples stayed together and managed to make it work in hectic Hollywood, they also met on the set of a film. Have you ever tried to work beside someone you fancy? Of course you have, you sly dog. Having a crush or falling in love with a co-worker changes the way you do your job, at least that’s probably the way it works; it has to. Knowing that these couples met and fell in love on the set of a movie changes the way we view that movie and their characters. We can look deep into these lovers’ eyes and see the longing there. Or maybe they’re professionals and they kept it all on the up and up. Now that you know who met who and where, you can be the judge. Here are 15 celebrity couples and the movie sets they met on.
15. Daniel Craig & Rachel Weisz – Dream House
Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz may not have actually met on the set of the movie they shot together Dream House, but that’s where they fell in love. The two had been friends for a while before that, but then they saw each other working, acting so good, and they couldn’t contain themselves. In the film, they play husband and wife and it seems they liked what they saw. After filming, they started dating and the next thing we knew, they were married. Now going on six years together, the stars have kept their private life on the hush hush, which is not very exciting for anyone. But, they seem to be going strong and they’re stinking rich, so life’s great.
14. Laurence Fishburne & Gina Torres – The Matrix Reloaded
When the two stars, Laurence Fishburne and Gina Torres, were filming The Matrix Reloaded, there was an instant attraction between them. Even though Torres, who played Cas in The Matrix Reloaded, was married to the character of Dozer, that didn’t stop Morpheus from getting in some quality time with the widow. Before filming was complete, they were dating, and before the film was even released, they were married. Since 2002, when the pair was wed, they’ve kept their relationship very low key to keep it out of the public eye, but I’m sure they wouldn’t mind us discussing it here. The real-life partners also got to play a married couple on NBC’s TV show Hannibal, from 2013-2015, which must have been just the worst. No doubt the experienced Fishbourne was giving unsolicited advice to Torres whenever he could, maybe even name-dropping to make himself look awesome: “You know sweetie, when I was in Apocalypse Now, Marlon Brando offered me some advice I could pass on to you.”
13. Eddie Cibrian and LeAnn Rimes – Northern Lights
If you haven’t seen the film Northern Lights yet, keep it that way. This TV movie based on a Nora Roberts book—a sentence that can only describe something truly awful—actually did do some good for the world though. Ok, maybe not some good for the world, but it did some good for LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian. The two met on the set of the film, started dating and then got married in 2011. You may not have heard about this wedding because, let’s face it, no one did. Rimes hasn’t really been in the spotlight for some time and the only good thing Cibrian’s ever done was play the janitor from Saved by the Bell: The College Years, quality work but not exactly high profile.
12. Mia Goth & Shia LaBeouf – Nymphomaniac
Even after that video came out of Shia LaBeouf talking about killing his girlfriend, Mia Goth, they’re still together and in love. At least that’s what they tell the cameras. LaBeouf, who was clearly wasted at the time, was spouting off a bunch of garbage, as per usual, so we won’t hold what he said against him too harshly. The couple met on the set of Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac, and have been a super weird item ever since. There’s now even some talk of them getting married, which is probably going to last forever, indubitably. You know what, despite all the craziness surrounding LaBeouf, there’s a large part of me that wants him to get it all back on track. He is actually a really talented actor when he’s focused and not trying to be the big man on campus.
11. Rachel Bilson & Hayden Christensen – Jumper
In 2007, while filming the worst movie ever Jumper, Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen decided to try out a little bit of love on each other. Bilson had just got out of a relationship with Adrian Brody (who she met on The O.C.) and Christensen was Anakin Skywalker, she basically had no choice. She had seen how hard he loved Padme and wanted to see if they could replicate that in real life. The two played love interests in the film and liked how it fit them. The next year, they were engaged but then broke up, but then got back together, then had a baby, and now they’re in it for the long haul. Christensen doesn’t do that much acting these days, though you can still see him in the odd thing. He’s become the househusband and is focusing on other ventures, while Bilson continues to act and bring home the bacon, while, every day, Christensen hopes that Bilson doesn’t meet another future boyfriend on set.
10. Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar – I Know What You Did Last Summer
Freddie Prinze Jr. is a very smart man. Despite what his goof ball roles lead you to assume, this guy figured it out a while back. In 1997, he was super famous and was a heartthrob around the world. At the same time, Sarah Michelle Geller was probably one of the biggest names on the planet. In the movie that they would meet on, I Know What You Did Last Summer, their characters weren’t even a couple, but they would become one not long after filming. After the two started dating, Gellar’s stock soared into Hollywood’s stratosphere while Prinze Jr.’s plummeted. But Gellar stayed by her man. By 2002, he was basically begging for roles in B movies, while Gellar was enjoying the height of her Buffy fame. Yet, even during this brief foreshadowing of their future together, Gellar, rather than upgrade Jr. for a Sr., married Freddie Prinze. Now they have kids and claim to be happier than ever. Good for them and good for him.
9. Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy – Evening
Now TV stars, Claire Danes (Homeland) and Hugh Dancy (Hannibal) met and started dating on the set of the 2007 film, Evening. Playing long-time friends in the movie, Dancy and Danes talk lovingly about the instant connection they felt when they first met. Not long after the film, they were going strong and steady. By 2009, they had been engaged and married and they now have a son. Of all the stars on this list, these two seem like they would be the nicest. There’s just something about both of them which makes them seem like kind people and easy to like.
8. Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux – Wanderlust
Ok, so these two actually met on the set of Tropic Thunder a few years before the movie Wanderlust, but we will ignore that for the time being. It was in 2010, while filming Wanderlust, that Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux first met—there, much better. Though they wholeheartedly denied having a relationship on set, we don’t believe them. It would take about a year after filming until they were ready to admit that they were together. Actually, looking back, Aniston described Theroux as “dark” when they met (on Tropic Thunder). She said that she thought he could have been a serial killer, which I’m sure was brought up when they were married in 2015 with friends and family around them (friends but not Friends because Joey and Chandler weren’t invited. Ouch!).
7. Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem – Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Even though Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem refuse to talk about their relationship in public, we’re going to spill the beans. If you didn’t already know, these two are together. They’ve been dating since the met on set of Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Yes, they already knew each other from their early 1992 film, Jamón, jamón, but there was 15 years in between those films, so they were basically meeting anew in 2007. In Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Bardem and Cruz play a reconciling ex-husband and wife, which must have brought them together romantically because, in 2010, the couple was married and they have had two children since. What a lovely couple. Remember when Penelope Cruz was with Tom Cruise? That was weird.
6. Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan – Step Up
This is an interesting couple because Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan met when they were both basically nobodies on the set of Step Up in 2006. Since then, Tatum has become an A-List actor and has completely overshadowed Dewan’s career, at least in terms of fame and fortune. This is usually a recipe for disaster in Hollywood. The person who makes it big is tempted by the evils of Hollywood and usually finds a supermodel as a mistress. We’ve all seen this kind of movie play out in front of us. I guess it doesn’t hurt that your wife looks like Dewan, but maybe it’s more than looks, maybe there’s something more to relationships after all. Well, whatever this mystery ingredient is, these two have made it work over the past 10 years and they don’t look like they’re slowing down.
5. Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling – The Place Beyond the Pines
When you have two people who could basically have anyone they want in the world, what are the chances that they would go on to choose each other? Well that’s just what happened with Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling when they met on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines in 2011. Ever since they played lovers in the film, the two have been on a magical journey of love and baby-making, producing two children (both out of wedlock!!!) and looking fabulous doing it. Actually, nothing is really known about their relationship because they’re so private about it. This is just how we picture it. C’mon now. Don’t lie. You’ve pictured it too.
4. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner – Pearl Harbor/Daredevil
If there was one good thing about Pearl Harbor, it’s that Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck got together. Of course, we’re talking about the film here, not the actual historical event. At least, Pearl Harbor is the film that they met on. It was actually on the set of Daredevil that they started smoochin’. If you were ever to watch this movie again, it would be only to see how these two lovebirds acted around each other on screen while they were emotionally connecting off screen. The problem is, the acting is just so bad it’s hard to pull out any human emotions from the performances. Maybe their on-screen failures were a result of behind-the-scenes sexual frustration. They were just so awkward and nervous that they couldn’t act normally. It’s possible. And the latest on their divorce? Nobody knows.
3. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt – Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Sometimes to show someone you love them, you have to try to kill them. That’s the message in Mr. and Mrs. Smith and it was through that message that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie first fell for each other. It was here on the set of this strange movie that Brangelina formed. Was Pitt technically still married to Jennifer Aniston? Yes, but they were going through the divorce settlement. Did the weird domestic abuse/sexual fantasy stuff on the set of the film encourage the attraction between the two stars Pitt and Jolie? Impossible to know, but we will say yes. Since then, Pitt and Jolie have been married and adopted a small nation of children to field a football team at Thanksgiving.
2. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds – Green Lantern
On the set of Green Lantern, two beautiful people, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, met. Even though they would go on to make one of the worst films ever built together, the two lovebirds started to like each other, like “like” like each other. It would take about a year for their bird of love to finally take flight, but, oh man, once it took to the air it was truly a thing of beauty. Again, this is all conjecture. They do seem happy though. They have a kid, too. Did you know that? I think Lively is pregnant again too! Two kids! Incroyable (French word meaning incredible or something).
1. Kurt Russell & Goldie Hawn – Swing Shift
In the 1968 film, The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, Hollywood’s best couple met for the very first time. It was then that 16-year-old Kurt Russell first met 21-year-old Goldie Hawn, and the two instantly hit it off. Hawn says that she didn’t pursue it because a five-year difference at that age is a big deal, but, in 1983, the two came face to face again in the film Swing Shift. In the film, Hawn and Russell would play lovers and that’s what they would become in real life. Now, 33 years later, they’re still going strong. Though they only have one child together, Hawn’s children from her first relationship, Oliver and Kate Hudson, consider Russell to be their father. How sweet.
