When you start dating someone, you probably already know that you’re going to be subject to a lot of opinions. Your best friend will have to weigh in on your significant other, your parents will have their say, and you’ll have a host of additional friends and family members who will offer no shortage of “advice” to help you along in your relationship.
For celebrities, the pressure that comes with being in a relationship is even greater. The public constantly dissects the romantic lives of famous people, and makes the conclusion that some people “fit,” while others aren’t a good match. But, as they say, the heart wants what the heart wants, and apparently, that goes for famous people as well. Some people just have a connection, and even though society says that they probably shouldn’t be together, they ignore these unofficial “rules” and pursue the love they want. In today’s hyper-critical society, that’s a pretty bold move.
Some Hollywood couples are also pretty outspoken when it comes to the injustices in the world, and make their voice heard in society when others would rather be silent. There are also some couples who are just so unlikely, they were bound to make the news, at least for a little while. Here are 15 famous couples who really don’t care about meeting society’s expectations.
15. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes
Tom Cruise is one of the biggest stars in the world. Katie Holmes, while she’s been in more projects since Dawson’s Creek, is still known for the WB teen drama. When the two got married, people certainly had a lot to say. According to “society,” Holmes wasn’t good enough to be Cruise’s wife, even though they were both in Hollywood. It has also been rumored that Cruise selected Holmes to be his wife, and that the marriage was nothing more than a contractual agreement organized by the Church of Scientology. The two have since divorced, but have a daughter together, so Katie will continue to be financially supported, no matter what new acting jobs she takes on. That’s the reason some people still think the marriage was fake.
14. Jim Carrey and Renee Zellweger
Renee Zellweger has a girl-next-door image, and was once married to country star Kenny Chesney (the marriage was annulled, and no one really knows why). Renee was also once engaged to funny guy Jim Carrey, and people were pretty shocked that the two were even attracted to each other. After all, how could a woman, who seemed to be the heartfelt, romantic type, fall for a man who doesn’t take anything seriously? It turned out that Carrey was battling depression, and the issue got to be too much for Zellweger to handle. This caused them to break off their engagement. Of course, there’s also a societal stigma that comes with loving someone with a mental illness, but Zellweger was obviously willing to overlook this for Carrey’s sake.
13. Ted Danson and Whoopi Goldberg
Not only did Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson look like an unlikely pair, they also got a lot of criticism for their interracial relationship. Many people were upset by the fact that a handsome, successful actor like Danson decided to date a Black woman. Goldberg also got criticism from the Black community for going outside of her race to find love. However, the two defined their relationship on their own terms, and even though they are no longer a couple, they are good friends. There was that one time Whoopi encouraged Ted to perform in “blackface,” which was a bad idea, but other than that, it seemed that the two just wanted to be happy together. They even worked on a few projects together. Unfortunately, there are rumors that Goldberg is still heartbroken over their breakup, and blames actress Mary Steenburgen (Danson’s wife) for taking Ted away from her.
12. John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston
Aniston comes across as such a grounded and friendly person. So we’re still wondering what she ever saw in John Mayer. Then again, we often wonder what any woman sees in the singer. Sure, he’s talented, but he’s made it clear that he’s a jerk and he lets his mouth get him into trouble way too often. There was even a time when Mayer alluded to the fact that he didn’t think Jennifer was too intelligent, since she couldn’t quite figure out the ins and outs of Twitter (the app was fairly new at the time). It’s also hard to picture what the two actually had in common, and Jennifer probably felt a lot of pressure to leave Mayer because she was a bigger star. If John was a decent guy, the two could have defied societal expectations and let love prevail. But, Aniston is now married to Justin Theroux, so that’s that.
11. Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett
Remember when America’s Sweetheart Julia Roberts, was married to country singer Lyle Lovett? The two didn’t even look like a likely pair, and most people thought Roberts should have married the Prince Charming type. The two dated for just three weeks before eloping. After two years of marriage, their schedules became too hectic and they decided to divorce. It has been reported that the two are still friends. Both stars are a bit more low-key than they were in the 1990s and early 2000s, and that is likely due to the fact that they are raising their respective families and making sure their children have normal lives.
10. Russell Brand and Jemima Khan
After Russell Brand and Katy Perry divorced, he got back in the dating scene by forming a relationship with Jemima Khan, who is a British journalist. Khan is considerably older than Russell, which obviously garners criticism from people who are watching his career. Of course, people may also be critical because Brand said some pretty terrible things about Katie and his lack of attraction to her before their divorce. Russell has also gone on record saying that his relationship with Khan is unlike anything he’s experienced. Looks like he’s ignoring the lack of faith the public has in him, and wants to start bettering his life. Khan and Brand have since broken up, but Russell has still continued to try to improve his public image.
9. Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden
Actress and model Cameron Diaz once said that she didn’t think she would ever get married. She also stated that she didn’t think it was natural for people to be monogamous. Apparently, her story changed when she met and fell in love with rocker Benji Madden. The two dated for just a few months before having a private wedding ceremony at their California home. Society dictates that someone of Cameron’s caliber should probably end up with a guy who is a little more polished. Obviously, there was a certain point when Diaz stopped worrying about what people thought, and she did what she felt was right for her. The couple doesn’t talk about their marriage much, which is probably a good sign.
8. Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra
All you’d have to do is take one look at former basketball player Dennis Rodman and model/singer/host Carmen Electra, and you’d know that the two don’t “match.” At least, that’s what society would have us believe. The two obviously had a connection of some sort, since they loved each other enough (or were drunk enough) to get married in Vegas. They quickly regretted the decision and had the marriage annulled 10 days later. There were also reports that the two were violent towards one another at times, which sometimes happens when two “passionate” people get together. We’re guessing the fact that Rodman is also a cross-dresser didn’t do much to keep his marriage together either, but hey, maybe Carmen was into that sort of thing.
7. Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney
Lady Gaga is known for being extremely eccentric, so most people expected her to date an outgoing rocker who appreciates her love of strange clothing and accessories. However, Gaga has found love in the arms of Chicago Fire star Taylor Kinney. He seems like a pretty regular guy, and the two appear to be very much in love. Gaga and Kinney are now engaged, which leads many of Lady Gaga’s fans to believe that she’s probably not as weird as she pretends to be. Gaga even stated in an interview that she’s the submissive one in the relationship, and that when she’s not working, she loves to make dinner for her man. Looks like you really can’t judge a book (or a woman dressed in meat) by its cover.
6. Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton
Singer and clothing designer Gwen Stefani recently divorced her rocker husband Gavin Rossdale, and the former couple has three sons together. Around the same time Stefani was ending her marriage, country singer Blake Shelton was breaking up with his wife Miranda Lambert, who is also a country singer. It seemed that Stefani and Shelton were married to people who seemed to be a great match for them, but the relationships just didn’t go the distance. Blake and Gwen, who are both judges on The Voice, started to fall for each other (most people thought it was a rebound relationship for the both of them) and made it public that they were a couple in 2015. Of course, there are plenty of things people could say about how these two make an unlikely couple, but they don’t seem to care, and it looks like they really care about each other.
5. David Spade and Julie Bowen
Most people don’t think of actor and comedian David Spade as the type to want a serious relationship, but for about a year, he dated actress Julie Bowen. The relationship started in 2002. Bowen, who is also a comedic actor, definitely has more of a polished image than Spade, which is why most fans were surprised to hear they were a couple. Looks like Julie got out before Spade had a chance to exhibit any classic bad boy behavior. Chances are the relationship could have been a bit of a publicity booster for both of them. Even though they were a pretty unlikely pair, it looks like they didn’t really care about other people’s opinions—at least for a year.
4. Beyonce and Jay-Z
According to society, when a woman has a wedding, she’s supposed to tell everyone she knows and make it very public that she is in love and has a husband. When celebrities have weddings, everyone expects it to be a grand event that will make the front pages of every entertainment magazine. Obviously, Beyonce didn’t get the memo on that. She and her now-husband Jay-Z, have always been private about their relationship, and were a couple for about a decade before they tied the knot. The couple has also defied certain societal expectations with everything from the vacations they take to how Beyonce dresses and the way they style their daughter, Blue Ivy’s hair. Recently, the couple has also been under scrutiny for funding the Black Lives Matter movement, and they’ve gotten attention for donating money to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. Jay-Z and Beyonce are a little more open about their relationship these days, but you’re still not going to get many private details about their marriage or family life, and it’s probably best that way.
3. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are among the most beautiful couples in the world. They are both successful actors, and have lent their talent and millions to a number of worthy causes. Pitt and Jolie also have three biological children together, along with several adopted children, and often make the news because of their big family. The Jolie-Pitts have also made it clear that they don’t care about society’s rules by proving that their love is stronger than ever, even though Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston when he fell for Angelina. Some would say that the couple’s charity work is their way of making up for the scandalous way they got together. Whatever the case, people still love to follow their story—even if it’s mostly to criticize them.
2. Sandra Bullock and Jesse James
Even though they’re no longer a couple due to James’ cheating ways, the two celebrities definitely shocked the public when they started dating and became man and wife. Many of Sandra Bullock’s fans concluded that she agreed to marry Jesse James because she was getting older and didn’t have any better prospects at the time. There were also rumors that Jesse James only wanted to be Bullock’s husband for the financial benefits. The marriage proved why it’s usually not good for a nice girl and a bad boy to get together. We’re guessing Bullock tried to give a guy who was rough around the edges a chance, and it just didn’t work out. Fortunately, she seems much happier these days, since she’s been dating and has an adopted son.
1. Josh Groban and Kat Dennings
Kat Dennings has a reputation for being a little rough around the edges, much like her character on Two Broke Girls. Based on her interviews, she’s a little sweeter in real life, but the public was still surprised when it was revealed that she was dating Josh Groban. Groban gives off a “band geek” vibe, and while he does have a beautiful voice, most people would have never pictured him with a hottie like Dennings. Then again, Groban did date January Jones at one point, so maybe he’s not quite as innocent as we think. Josh and Kat officially confirmed they were a couple when they showed up on the red carpet together in October 2014, and they’ve been going strong ever since.
