It goes without saying, that in today’s culture the cult of celebrity seems more important than ever before. With some people willing to do just about anything to acquire any level of fame, the select few that attain that lofty status sometimes develops attitudes of entitlement and derision for the rest of us. Considering most celebs need the public’s support in order to make money, let alone remain in the spotlight, the idea that they would dislike those who make their lifestyle possible seems silly. Yet somehow, there are some celebs that have shown through statements or actions, that they seem to actually hate either their fans or legions of regular folks.
In order for a person to be considered for inclusion on this list the first requirement you need to meet is that you’ve managed to become a well-known entity with a significant fan base. We’re not saying that every reader will necessarily be aware of everyone included, as everyone’s knowledge base is different, but each of them will be known to some. The next criteria someone needed to meet is that there are documented reasons to believe that our entries hold a lot of people, possibly including their fans, in contempt. Whether that comes in the form of actual statements they’ve made or something they’ve done publicly, all that matters is that they’ve shown their true feelings about some. So, without any further ado, let’s get to the list.
15. Christina Aguilera
Probably the most talented singer to come out of the pop music trend that took over the world in the late-nineties, Christina has proven over and over again that she is a force to be reckoned with. Once christened the “Princess of Pop”, she has earned five Grammys and one Latin Grammy, while selling more than 17.9 million albums and being included on Rolling Stones‘ list of the greatest singers ever. Keeping all of that in mind, it may seem almost inevitable that she would start to carry herself as a huge star. Somebody who has had a long list of celebrities bash her attitude, including Pink, Mariah Carey, Avril Lavigne, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears, to name just a few, it seems she doesn’t care about anyone else’s feelings.
14. Triple H
For those of you who aren’t wrestling fans, let us introduce you to Triple H, one of the select few people who seem to be in direct line to inherit the keys to the WWE castle when Vince McMahon leaves. Also one of the most beloved figures behind the scenes today because of the influence he has had in creating so many new stars, some may have forgotten that it wasn’t always that way. A former fourteen-time world champion who has headlined WrestleMania multiple times, he has spent a great deal of his career as one of the most pushed people in the company. Despite the fact that he was already on the rise before he became involved with a McMahon, many fans have criticized him a lot, feeling that he is overused and owes it all to his marriage.
Perhaps that is why he has badmouthed the fans that have made his career possible many times in the past. Someone who reportedly hates fans who lambaste the product on social media, Trips has mocked them in character but it certainly seems like his remarks aren’t a stretch. The fact that, prior to his ascension to the top of the company, he repeatedly referred to wrestling fans as “living in their parents’ basements” speaks volumes about his true feelings.
13. Ariana Grande
A star from a very young age, she started out on Broadway before appearing in multiple Nickelodeon series, and this songstress has become one of the biggest pop stars in the world over the last several years. A talented woman with an incredible vocal range, Ariana’s hit songs like “The Way” and “Problem”, have earned her a huge array of fans. Yet somehow, if reports are to be believed, she holds her followers in contempt. Somebody who has been dogged more and more by rumours of a diva attitude, a few years back it surfaced that she was apparently overheard saying she hoped her fans would all f–ing die. Although she denied those claims, we can’t imagine anyone dependent on album sales would ever admit to them and the fact that it seems plausible speaks to the way she has carried herself. Looking for a reason why people may buy the rumours? Look no further than the fact that footage was leaked of her saying she hates America previously.
12. Shia LeBeouf
Children born after this young actor’s heyday may find it almost impossible to believe that this eccentric star was once tapped by Hollywood to be one of his generation’s biggest stars. In their defence, there were good reasons to think so at the time, as he’d proven himself capable of leading an indie drama (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints) as well as several blockbuster films (Transformers trilogy and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull). That said, his unusual behaviour in these days seems to have permanently put those days behind us, save for a Robert Downey Jr. style comeback.
However, acting odd and ruining your once promising career is far from a good reason to find your name on this list. Famed for attempting to goad people into fights at bars around the globe, Shia seems to loathe his fame and anyone who questions his artistic integrity (which several instances of plagiarism make all too flawed), which includes pretty much everyone.
11. Robert Pattinson
One of the stars of the Twilight franchise, there was a time where Robert’s face could be seen on the walls of millions of teens, youngsters, and even some adults. Considering the 3.3 billion dollars in worldwide receipts the series was able to pull in, it should have been a huge boon to his career, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. That may have a lot to do with the fact that throughout the years he spent working on the films, Robert would consistently admit how much he disliked the product of his work and the people who loved them. If you were a fan of the series, Robert had some choice words for you when he questioned what Twihards, as they have been christened, do all day. “They sit in front of their computers and comment on anything having even remotely to do with Twilight”. Oh, and if you’ve referred to him as R-Patz, he can’t stand that either, saying, “I’d like to strangle the guy who came up with it!”
10. Christian Bale
An actor who absolutely throws himself into his roles, Christian Bale has managed to turn himself into a huge star but that doesn’t mean he cares for celebrity life or the people who love his work. The star of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, American Psycho, The Prestige, American Hustle, and many others, we presume he is ok with people liking his work but otherwise leave him the hell alone. Maybe his take is fair, as it does seem weird that being an actor means that you have to live such a public life, but that doesn’t give you license to be a d**k. According to his former publicist, Harrison Cheung, the actor could be so mean to children who’d approach him to profess their adoration that he would make them cry. Although it is clear that the person telling these tales may have an axe to grind, if they are even partially accurate, and based on his on-set fit years ago, it seems entirely possible, he belongs here.
9. Paul Feig and Melissa McCarthy
Remakes, reboots, sequels, prequels and spin-offs. There are many of these types of films that are made and released each year due to the belief that slapping a known brand onto a poster and playing a film in a theater is as close to a sure thing Hollywood can possibly find. There is, however, a lot of baggage that can come along with a once beloved franchise and it is entirely possible that the series’ fans will angrily reject your efforts. The latest film to feel that sting, Ghostbusters, got it worse than almost anyone expected.
Due in large part to the fact that many long-time fans of the franchise felt a sense of ownership over the franchise, which trailers made them feel was being done wrong, the project was hated by many. Also clearly present in the conversation unfortunately was a vocal minority whose sole issue and talking point was the fact that the roles were gender swapped. According to comments made by the film’s writer-director Paul Feig, and one of its stars, Melissa McCarthy, everyone who didn’t like the trailers are disgusting misogynists. McCarthy said, “What they don’t say when they’re typing is that one minute after they type their mom is like, ‘Get upstairs and take out the garbage! You’re 45 years old!’” While Feig said, “f– the haters” and “geek culture is home to some of the biggest assholes I’ve ever met in my life.” While we don’t support trolling artists who are just trying to make a movie for people to enjoy, we also don’t appreciate the fact that these two painted all detractors with the same brush.
8. Megan Fox
Are you a woman? If so, why do you hate Megan Fox? Wait, wait, you’re telling us that you don’t hate her? Well according to the actress you do. Known for starring in the first two live-action Transformers movies, as well as the rebooted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, Megan has managed to become a well-known celebrity. Despite that fact, she seems to believe that her movies don’t do well, despite the fact that she has been in several hits, because of the persona she has created for herself. Evidently the actress “created a rebellious, frankly sexual persona and talked her way into the limelight” but now feels she needs to change her persona around. Quoted as saying, “Girls think I’m a sl*t, and I’ve been in the same relationship since I was 18. The problem is, if they think you’re attractive, you’re either stupid or a whore or a dumb whore,” apparently, women have a hive mind.
7. Chris Brown
There was a time where Chris Brown was a man who was mostly loved by society and was portrayed as a sweet boy on shows like One Tree Hill and in music videos. Those days are long gone, however. Known as a singer and dancer, his once squeaky clean name now brings to mind domestic abuse in the minds of many because of his attack on Rihanna. You may be asking yourself, though; doesn’t his greatly tarnished reputation have more to do with a list of hated celebrities instead of one like this? That is a valid point but the reason we had to include him here has to do with the fact that he seems to hate anyone who won’t let his disgusting past go. The fact that he has been known to get in the face of parking attendants on top of freaking out backstage after interviews where he was asked about the incident only serve to ensure that many people will never forget or forgive. Since that is the case, it seems Chris and a large portion of the public will forever be locked in a self-perpetuating circle of hating one another.
6. Gwyneth Paltrow
We’re just going to come out and say it; Gwyneth Paltrow needs to just shut up. An actress who has been phenomenal in movies like Seven, The Talented Mr. Ripley and The Royal Tenenbaums, to name just a few, her online exploits have made people dislike her enough that she was named the most hated celebrity in the world in 2013. If you haven’t heard about her writings and words in interviews you may be wondering why, and let us assure you there is a good reason.
On spending time with Americans she said, “I was at a party and a girl looked at me and said, “‘Oh, my God! Are those Juicy jeans that you’re wearing?’ and I thought I can’t stay here. I have to get back to Europe.” The last quote we’ll list (trust us we could have kept going) is this, “I am who I am. I can’t pretend to be somebody who makes $25,000 a year”. She clearly thinks she is better than you unless you live her affluent lifestyle and speak in the ways she can tolerate.
5. Justin Bieber
Another huge pop star, there are few celebrities in modern history who could compete with this singer when it comes to the fan department. Followed by legions of Beliebers, despite the fact that many of the people who’ve followed Justin’s career seem to have an almost psychotic level of devotion to him, things haven’t always gone smoothly. At one point the focus of stories that claimed that he spit on fans that were positioned below his hotel balcony, the validity of those articles has been questioned. There is one thing that is absolutely unquestionable, though, the singer has recently threatened his fans that they better behave or else he will take his Instagram away. Although we couldn’t care less if his social media accounts disappeared, it is clear that the fans that’ve had his back through all the drama of his life, of which there have been lots, may be devastated. Even his ex-girlfriend, Selena Gomez, schooled him on not taking his fans for granted, saying, “Don’t be mad at your fans. They love you.” If that is how he treats the people who adore him so, how do you think he feels about those of us who think his music sucks?
4. CM Punk
For several years CM Punk was the person that the internet wrestling community embraced whole-heartedly. Fantastic in the ring and enthralling on the mic, whenever he appeared in front of wrestling fans, the majority of them couldn’t wait to see what came next. A former world champion in the biggest wrestling company in the world, the WWE was once taken over by the so-called Summer of Punk but he left their fold several years ago now. Set to debut in the UFC this year barring injury, the fact that they signed him at an advanced age without a fight record of any kind proves how valuable they feel his fan base is. Someone who once hit an attendee at a WWE event (being fair, he seemed to think the gentleman was pushing him), there are so many accounts of him being rude to fans it is ridiculous. According to the man himself, if you approach him the right way at the right location he will indulge your love for him. If you say something he deems rude or speaks to him when he wants to be left alone things will not go smoothly. Why is that? He admits freely that he doesn’t like many of his fans and people in general.
Morrissey is an English singer and songwriter who first became famous as the lead singer of The Smiths and has enjoyed an intensely loyal following ever since. Nowhere near as popular as someone like Justin Bieber, his fans are nonetheless similarly devoted (we couldn’t resist the comparison knowing how much he would loathe it). Continuing to perform consistently today, if you love him and live in Canada, you need to travel far and wide to see one of his shows. Why is that? He once saw a video of an animal being abused in Canada and although many Canucks would have been equally disgusted, he has permanently decided to never perform there again. Although we could list many other examples of his many feuds, that anecdote perfectly personifies his propensity for blind hatred.
2. Kanye West and Kim Kardashian
A marriage that seems like the consolidation of ego with attention, the union of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West has provided the media with plenty of controversies. Bringing together a woman whose ex-husband says referred to her fans as “pathetic nobodies”, with a man who feels that everyone alive should bow down to him, this pairing is built to abhor the rest of us. We’d continue to list ways in which they prove how they really feel about everyone outside their little unit but if you know their personal life it is clear already and if you don’t you are doing something right.
1. Brock Lesnar
Brock Lesnar is the only man ever to have won titles in the UFC and WWE, let alone the Heavyweight Championships. He is probably the only man in the WWE who they want on their roster more than he wants to be there. A huge pay-per-view draw who has proven time and time again that the masses will pay to see him do his thing, Brock funnily enough doesn’t like almost any of the people that are happy to spend their money to see him. Having out and out said, “I really don’t like people,” in a public interview, he has no problem admitting he doesn’t “play well” with others. If that is what he says in public, what words does he choose when he is in a private setting? In short, unless you’re one of the few people who he actually cares about on this Earth, Brock Lesnar never ever wants to come into contact with you. It can’t get clearer than that.
