Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Snapchat. How do you feel about social media, personally? Are you addicted to your social networks and constantly have your head buried into your phone? Are you adding new stories to Snapchat or uploading beautiful pictures on Instagram on a regular basis? Does whatever pops up on your Facebook feed determine your mood throughout the entire day? If this sounds like you, then maybe you are a bit addicted to social networks. There are some celebs who fear this addiction, and that is why they stay away from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the like. Of course, there are other reasons why famous people stay away from social media.
When you think about it, there are plenty of reasons why Hollywood stars would be afraid of getting on social media. There is so much hate flying around, plus people looking for validation, competing for attention, and promoting their best selves ever. There is so much pressure for normal people to portray a perfect lifestyle, so just imagine how celebrities are expected to act on Twitter and Instagram! It’s no wonder they avoid these social networks at all costs! Who do you wish would join the waves of fans on Facebook and Snapchat? Check if they are featured below. If they are, then we’re sorry, but you probably won’t be seeing them join social media for a loooong time. Now let’s get to it!
15. Jennifer Garner
According to this 40-something-year-old actress, she just wouldn’t have anything all that interesting to post on social media. Jennifer Garner just doesn’t see the point of joining Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, or any other social network. Think about it; Jen is probably super busy taking care of her kids and continuing her successful professional life. Plus there’s all that stuff with Ben Affleck (for the record, Ben uses social media). However, for Jennifer Garner, there was never any appeal in the Facebook craze, or any of the other sites that flourished afterwards. Good for her for not succumbing to the pressure to post her entire life and day-to-day activities online. We need more people like that! What we don’t need more of? Those stupid and outrageous tabloid articles such as the recent one about Jennifer Garner. It says that her ex-husband, Ben Affleck, has gotten back together with Jennifer Lopez and that Jennifer Garner is pregnant.
14. Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen
These celebrity twins will not be found anywhere near social media, so if you’re trying to keep tabs on them, good luck! The Olsen twins have been under the radar for quite awhile, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they don’t have any social media accounts. The twins have explained their reasoning by saying that they have been trying for their whole lives to lead more private lives. These girls have been famous since they were in diapers! They probably fully savor their quiet private time whenever they have the chance. They went on to say that joining Twitter or Instagram or anything like that would go against what they’ve been striving for this whole time: their own privacy! Ashley even said that the thought of fans following her every post on social media would give her a panic attack! Maybe that’s why she and her sister don’t even sit for fashion shows promoting their clothing company, The Row.
13. Amy Poehler
For comedienne and actress Amy Poehler, there isn’t anything happy and funny about social media. In fact, Poehler tries not to use the Internet too much for social or Hollywood things. Even if she is reading something seemingly positive about herself, she can still find herself being overexposed and attacked. As some of the other celebs on this list have mentioned, Poehler explains that the Internet can be really frightening and threatening, and she prefers to just stay away. Poehler also finds herself freaked out by selfies and all of that oversharing, which seems a bit strange considering that Poehler totally bares it all in her comedic acts. But we suppose that’s just acting, and on social media, she is expected to make her actual life look just as glamorous and peppy. She’d rather bypass all of that pressure. Yet she will be a bit nervous about presenting at the Emmy Awards ceremony!
12. Keira Knightley
For actress Keira Knightley, the Internet is like a big scary place where everyone is constantly judging and dehumanizing each other. We think everyone has had that experience before. After all, the Internet can be a very scary place indeed! Knightley says that any time she uses the Internet she witnesses people being nasty to each other, or famous people being publicly scrutinized by the media. She even equated it to the schoolyard bullies, and it is true that cyberbullying is a huge problem these days. Surely everyone has heard at least one story of a person being ridiculed or bullied online. Sometimes the results can be extremely disastrous. Knightley is one actress who refuses to contribute to that kind of thing. In fact, she recently appeared in a United Nations project alongside other celebrities. It was a call to action about the global refugee crisis. Don’t worry; you can find it online.
11. Kate Winslet
Not only does actress Kate Winslet not use social media, but she refuses to have anyone in her home use it. That’s right; even her children are banned from joining the ranks on Facebook, Twitter, or any other social network. Winslet is a firm believer that very bad things result from social media, especially in regards to women. Winslet is a firm believer that the media and social networks contribute significantly to the proportion of people with eating disorders and poor self-esteem, and it is something that really gets to Winslet on a personal level. She feels strongly that the less social media a person consumes, the better. Moreover, Winslet is a huge maternal figure to her children, and they come first – always. She even turns down acting roles if she needs to spend a long time away from her family. Aww. If only she posted some pics for us to see. Oh well!
10. Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie
Brad Pitt and his wife Angelina take more of a “we’re too good for social media” stance. When it comes to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the like, Brad and Angelina say that they just don’t get it, and it’s something that they don’t need. Well, we can’t really argue with that; Brad and Angelina don’t need social media. Their professional lives are still burning up even though fans don’t keep up with them on Snapchat or Insta. Brad and Angelina understand that what goes on the Internet stays on the Internet, and therefore they have their reservations about it. When their children are using the Internet, they have a nanny monitor their activity to ensure that their safe. Still, social media and rampant Internet stories still abound about Brad and Angelina. The Hollywood couple has said that those stupid stories that they are divorcing are 100% false! Pesky cyber tabloids!
9. Jake Gyllenhaal
Don’t expect to see Jake Gyllenhaal’s smoldering face on your Instagram feed or any other social media site. The actor stays away from these social networks, mostly out of fear. You see, Gyllenhaal is concerned that more and more people are falling prey to the social media and smartphone addiction. We have all been that person who was staring down at our phones instead of paying attention to the person speaking right in front of our faces. It’s actually kind of admirable that Gyllenhaal doesn’t want to become “that guy”. Even so, he does realize that his fans would love for him to be on social media because it would make him more accessible. Give the guy a break though! He is currently starring in a Tom Ford film, Nocturnal Animals; a teaser trailer was recently introduced. Get ready to see a much more emo Jake Gyllenhaal. He’s still super sexy though!
8. Emma Stone
Actress Emma Stone tends to look down on social media and has this sort of disdain about it. She doesn’t want to join the ranks of people who are creating this fabrication of their lives and trying to keep up with the hottest posts. According to Stone, social media provides people with an outlet to achieve a certain level of fame that is kind of pseudo-fame. She also thinks that the majority of people on Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter are merely trying to feel validated and win some kind of online popularity contest. Wow. Seems like we won’t be seeing this actress on social media anytime soon! She is way too busy with all of her acting projects anyway. Check her out alongside Ryan Gosling in the musical movie La La Land. It is getting amazing reviews without her promoting it on Twitter! Singing, acting, dancing…this girl’s too busy for selfies.
7. Sandra Bullock
We fully support Sandra Bullock’s stance on social media. The gorgeous actress said that she isn’t into taking selfies and she doesn’t support them because she says they don’t represent our true selves. Who wouldn’t agree with that? With all of the filters and photo editing apps that we have widely available these days, you can’t really trust anything you see on social media networks. Therefore, Bullock just chooses to say “no” and stay away from these sites. As an actress in her 50s, we can see why should wouldn’t be too keen on Facebook, Snapchat, or Instagram. Even so, her reasons for avoid these sites make so much sense. The selfies and photos you see just aren’t that real; they aren’t the full picture! Sounds like Bullock has a firm understanding of who she is and what she values. And don’t worry; Bullock shares personal stories in other ways, such as on daytime talk shows.
6. Julia Roberts
The actress with the million-watt smile can turn sour in an instant if she uses social media. Roberts has stated that she doesn’t want to join the ranks of social networking sites because it is a breeding ground for hate. When people are safely positioned behind a computer screen, they can say whatever they want and bully people to know end. Roberts is afraid of what she would find if she dug any deeper into social media, so she chooses to live a Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram-free life. It sounds kind of nice when you think about it, doesn’t it? While Roberts does admit that social media does hold a certain appeal, it quickly fades away and then all the hate pours out. Ain’t got no time for that! Roberts is set to appear in a new film, Fool Me Once, which is an adaptation from a book by Harlan Coben.
5. Emily Blunt
For actress Emily Blunt, her reasons for staying away from social networks stem from a fear that it would go against the mission of her job. For instance, her career is to get into character and become someone who is convincing and intriguing. If she got on Twitter or Instagram and started posting all sorts of things, she would be dismantling all of that work that she had been striving for. It’s kind of an interesting way to look at it, isn’t it? We like it! On the other hand, Blunt also admits that she is really bad with technology, and she barely has a handle on managing her texts. Like many other celebs, Blunt is pretty sure that she wouldn’t even have anything interesting to post. That doesn’t stop the paparazzi from snapping loads of photos and the papers from writing stories about her new haircut and her fashion choices.
4. George & Amal Clooney
It could be his age (he’s just about a senior citizen), or it could just be that George Clooney doesn’t want people to know what he’s doing every hour of every day. Plus, George is known to enjoy a drink every night, so can you imagine what might slip out of his mouth and onto social media if he were to get loose? If you have ever seen Clooney as a guest star on a late night talk show, then you know that he gets very joking and candid late at night. Just give him a few swigs of alcohol and listen up! We’re fooling around, of course, but it’s very good for a guy to know his limits. Oversharing can be extremely detrimental for a celeb! Clooney and his wife really don’t have time for social media anyway. They are busy being humanitarians and fighting for underprivileged people in Sudan.
3. Jennifer Lawrence
J-Law may have starred as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, but she still has her fears. One of them is the Internet in general. Lawrence is not too keen on technology and the world of cyberspace, and for her it is just another chore to keep up with. Therefore, she has not signed on to any social media accounts; she can barely handle regular old email! J-Law also warned that if you find any social media accounts that use her name, they are fake because she is not authorizing those accounts. So now you know! Lawrence may be all over the magazines and even celebrity websites, but you won’t find her on Facebook, Twitter, or any other social network. Still, Lawrence still can’t seem to evade the Internet. Recently, a fake People magazine account on Twitter said that J-Law might be starring as Mulan in a Disney reboot. ~Sigh~
2. Jennifer Aniston
Yet another famous Jennifer has made our list of stars who refuse to use social media. Jennifer Aniston makes a very solid point when she says that celebrities are out there all the time, and they need to work really hard for a private life. Why would they go and ruin that by posting to social media? It sounds like Aniston really values her quiet time and she doesn’t want anything to get in between her and her peace and serenity. We feel that, and we think her argument against social networks totally makes sense. When you consider that celebs are constantly trying to avoid the paparazzi and stay out of the tabloids, it seems kind of weird that they would do a complete 180 and post on Snapchat or Instagram. Besides, Jen is dealing with some trouble in her personal relationship with Justin Theroux, and she really wouldn’t appreciate having all of that drama splayed all over Twitter.
1. Daniel Radcliffe
No Facebook or Twitter for the Harry Potter star, which is a bummer for his legions of fans. Daniel Radcliffe has his professional life all out there in the public sphere, so it really shouldn’t surprise us that he would prefer to keep his personal details and activities to himself. We get that. Still, it hasn’t stopped others from trying to pressure Radcliffe into joining the social networks. But Radcliffe stands by his statement that he doesn’t need to know about everyone else’s day-to-day activities. It’s 2016 and he still isn’t on Facebook or Twitter, so it’s safe to say that it’ll stay this way. Anyway, Radcliffe is busy living his life and enjoying his 20s while living in Manhattan, New York. He is set to appear in Jungle, a thrilling film that has him playing a man deserted in the Amazon rain forest. It’s coming in 2017, so snag your tickets early!
