Why would the rich and famous steal when they already have plenty of money? They have a lot to lose from getting caught and seemingly nothing to gain. Their reputations are usually tarnished, sometimes beyond repair.
Some celebrities have been caught stealing before they became big in Hollywood, some just had severe self-destructive tendencies, and others simply wanted to get back what they thought was rightfully theirs. Some celebrities have been caught stealing only a few dollars worth of items, while others got caught red handed stealing thousands of dollars worth of material.
Here, we’ve taken a look at fifteen celebrities who surprised us all when their thieving ways were made public. Some got off with merely a slap on the wrist, while others have faced serious jail time because of their illegal behaviour.
15. Megan Fox
Megan Fox is reportedly banned from a Wal-Mart in Florida because she stole some lip-gloss as a teen. Apparently, she stole a $7 tube of lip-gloss and was caught on a security camera doing so. She denied it at first, but confessed when security threatened to call the police on her.
One of Fox’s childhood friends told the National Enquirer that Fox would often steal things like candy from convenience stores in her hometown. It looks like Megan Fox has abandoned her rebellious teenage ways as she hasn’t been accused of any sort of shoplifting since she became a Hollywood superstar.
Before Kesha became a famous pop musician she was destitute and desperate to get by. So, she was forced to steal to feed herself. She would shoplift food from grocery stores, and when she couldn’t get away with that she was forced to sell her clothes so she could have some money to buy food.
“I’d go to the dollar store. It would have been a bit of a nightmare if I had been caught and arrested. There are so many times I’ve come close to being arrested,” she said about her attempts to feed herself when she couldn’t afford it.
13. Winona Ryder
When Winona Ryder got caught shoplifting it was practically all the media could talk about at the time. How could someone who looked so sweet and innocent stoop to such lows?
Ryder was caught on camera stealing thousands of dollars worth of luxury goods from Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hill in 2001. Ryder attempted to steal nearly $5,000 worth of clothes and accessories by cutting off the tags on the items and placing them along with items in her bag that she had already purchased. She was arrested, and during her trial a discussion of the actress’ drug use came to the fore.
12. O.J. Simpson
O.J. Simpson was suspected of one of the most heinous crimes imaginable: killing his own wife. However, a jury deemed him innocent of that crime. Yet he couldn’t escape justice when he was caught stealing a haul of sports merchandise.
He was found guilty of armed robbery after he held a sports collector at gunpoint at the Palace Station hotel and casino in Las Vegas in 2007. He is still in jail at the Lovelock Correctional Center because of charges relating to that incident. Simpson was sentenced to 33 years in jail.
11. Amanda Bynes
Amanda Bynes‘ life keeps going off of the rails, and now she is no longer welcome in Barney’s stores in New York. In October of this year, she was banned after she walked right out of the store wearing a $200 hat that she didn’t pay for.
Earlier that same day, she attempted another daring daylight robbery. At Pookie and Sebastian in New York, Bynes attempted to sneak a shirt out of the store without paying. When she was confronted, she handed over her credit card to cover the cost of the $128 shirt.
10. Britney Spears
Britney Spears has had numerous run-ins with police having “forgotten” to pay for items. In 2008, she walked out of a Fred Segal store wearing a $200 shirt that she didn’t pay for. When her entourage and the staff at the store noticed what she had done, she managed to play dumb and avoided arrest.
The year before that, she was caught red handed on camera pilfering a disposable lighter, and she was also accused of stealing a wig at one point. It seems that Spears enjoys the risk of making off with things without paying, no matter how cheap or expensive the items.
9. Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan has become more famous for her run-ins with the law than for her acting career. Lohan was once sentenced to 120 days in jail after she stole a necklace valued at $2,500 from a store in Los Angeles.
Lohan’s version of the incident is bizarre and completely contradicts what the shop owner said. Lohan claimed the necklace was on loan to her, and she said her stylist was supposed to return it. The store owner said otherwise. The truth was that she tried on plenty of jewelry, and she walked out of the store wearing the necklace that she didn’t pay for.
8. Courtney Love
When she was just 14 years old, Courtney Love was a rebellious teen. She fought with her parents constantly and regularly disobeyed authority figures. She once stole a Kiss t-shirt that caught her eye, but she was caught in the act. Love had to spend time in the Hillcrest Youth Correctional facility for her shoplifting ways.
7. Brooke Burke
Actress Brooke Burke was involved in some shady dealings, and ended up being sued for it. She and her husband, Baywatch star David Charvet, were accused of buying $70,000 worth of stolen appliances from an employee of Euroconcepts Inc.
Burke and her husband adamantly denied they had any knowledge that the goods were stolen. However, rather than going through the hassle of going to court and risk being found guilty, Burke and her husband settled out of court with Euroconcepts Inc.
6. Jennifer Capriati
Jennifer Capriati’s troubles and brushes with the law have made headlines nearly as often as her Tennis wins. She has sought treatment for a drug overdose and was arrested for marijuana possession. She was even charged with stalking one of her ex-boyfriends.
Before all of that, it was her shoplifting that got her into trouble. She claimed it was an accident when she left a store in Florida wearing a $15 ring that she had not paid for. She said she was trying on many rings and simply forgot to take this particular ring off when she left the store.
5. Bai Ling
Bai Ling’s excuse for shoplifting was almost as dumb as the fact she shoplifted. While waiting for her flight to leave from Los Angeles International Airport, Ling decided to giver herself a five finger discount at the airport store.
She stole two magazines and two packs of batteries, which would have cost less than $20. The actress blamed her shoplifting ways on the trauma of a recent bad breakup. This is not only one of the strangest cases of celebrity shoplifting, but one of the lamest excuses too.
4. Rex Reed
Film critic Rex Reed pilfered some CDs from Tower Records in Manhattan. Reed claimed he had forgotten that he had put the CDs in his pocket, and the shoplifting charges were later dropped.
The CDs he accidentally stole were by Mel Torme, Peggy Lee and Carmen McRae. In a twist of fate, Peggy Lee later sent Reed her entire music catalog, and Reed quipped “she was so thrilled I wanted one of her CDs enough to put myself through so much hell.”
3. Stephanie Pratt
Reality TV star Stephanie Pratt stole $1,300 worth of clothing and accessories from a Neiman Marcus store in Hawaii while she was working as a production assistant on the TV show Lost. It was at a time when she was also struggling with a substance abuse problem.
The Hills star was arrested for shoplifting, and when police searched her purse they found numerous drugs. She ended up facing second-degree theft charges, but she managed to escape being charged for drug related offences. She said her arrest was a wake up call, but that didn’t stop her from being arrested for drunk driving three years later.
2. Shelly Morrison
Will and Grace star Shelley Morrison doesn’t remember much about the fact that she shoplifted. When she was arrested for stealing $446 worth of costume jewelry from a Robinsons-May department store in Los Angeles she was reportedly in complete shock.
She told the LAPD she had no idea she had put the jewelry in her pockets. She also said she never would have bought the jewelry or even given it to anyone as a gift in a million years. Morrison never denied she was guilty, and after her arrest she had a very tough time. She refused to eat and lost 30 pounds, according to her husband.
1. Farrah Fawcett
Charlie’s Angels star Farrah Fawcett had a long and fruitful career, and her battle with cancer showed she was a strong person. However, that doesn’t mean she never did anything wrong in her life. She wasn’t perfect, and she did have some run-ins with police.
In 1970, at the height of her career, she was arrested for shoplifting clothes from high-end fashion boutiques. She didn’t steal just once; she did it twice. She claimed she stole the clothes because the store refused to give her credit for items she had returned earlier. The first time she stole she was fined $125 dollars, and the second time she was fined $265.
