For some people, making friends is easy. But even those who routinely make fast friends “adulting” provides less opportunity to meet new friends than the plethora of mates available as young school-aged children. As an adult, the opportunity to meet friends gets smaller than when there was a class full of potential BFFs at your disposal. Instead, new friends are often relegated to coworkers, friends of friends, or people we meet at social and sports groups.
If you think that’s tough, consider the life of a celebrity – often homeschooled or tutored, working long hours, and travelling to promote their latest film, album or other projects. This can make it difficult to form long and lasting bonds. That considered, access to much more money than most and frequent travel can also lead to unusual bonds, and friends tied to each other from every corner of the world.
While the time regular folks spend with their BFFs can be notably different than that of a celebrity (significantly fewer paparazzi and bottle service) many of these friendships aren’t that different. They are formed while working on temporary, yet intense projects together and bonding over annoying coworkers and funky schedules.
Celebrities need friends too. Who else are they going to be fabulous with in St. Bart’s when taking a much needed break or text with while on set during hours upon hours of makeup and hair? Famous besties can also bond with and relate to celeb troubles the way the rest of the world just wouldn’t understand. These 15 celeb besties are certain to give you and your bestie FOMO (fear of missing out).
15. Adele and Jennifer Lawrence
They first met in 2013 at the Oscars when Lawrence snuck backstage in her ball gown to get closer to Adele during her performance of “Skyfall.” From stories to their dinners out in NYC, sometimes also including Emma Stone, to friendship related legends we can all relate to. But this friendship goes beyond partying at concerts and dinners out. When Jennifer Lawrence was asked to write a tribute to Adele when the singer was honored with a place on TIME’s “100 Most Influential People” list, she was happy to provide her friend with a rave review and wrote an essay about her British Bestie. J.Law said, “Her undeniable talent and beauty…Adele is a gift, an international treasure, but she’s also sweet, funny, intelligent and beautiful.”
14. Lena Dunham and Taylor Swift
The friendship of Lena and Taylor is like a modern day love story; they met on social media (Twitter to be specific) and slowly started communicating with each other, both incredibly supportive and vocal about their love of the other’s work. The rest is friendship history. They both publicly praise each other about just about everything, while Taylor talks about appreciating Dunham making time for her even when she’s shooting Girls (“like 40,000 hours a day, she always figures out a couple of hours to come visit”). When Lena and her boyfriend Jack Antonoff moved into a new place together naturally Swift had the perfect housewarming gift for them, a taxidermy preserved moth, naturally. Recently when Kanye West released his highly controversial video for the song “Famous” (which included the rapper in bed alongside a topless Taylor Swift doppelgänger), Dunham was quick to defend her friend and women everywhere criticizing it as “sickening” in its misogynistic portrayal of women.
13. Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston
They were best friends in the critically acclaimed and decade long television series Friends, which is part of the reason why it melts our hearts in real life that Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox are both real-life besties. It’s no secret that the cast enjoyed spending time together both on and off set, with Aniston recently talking about watching the entire first season together. Jennifer and Courteney have continued to support each other in the years that have passed since the show concluded, and Jennifer has spoken publicly about playing dress up with Cox’s daughter Coco. The two recently reunited at a charity event for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. In 2015 when Jennifer Aniston married husband Justin Theroux, who did she ask to be her maid of honor? Courteney Cox, naturally. The two remain best of friends, even 11 years after the series went off the air. This friendship was clearly meant to last a lifetime!
12. Eddie Vedder and Neil Young
Friendships can take many forms, and sometimes the bond can begin as a mentor and protégé relationship. This is the case of the roots of Eddie Vedder’s long time student, teacher, and collaborator with the godfather of grunge, Mr. Neil Young. Pearl Jam and Neil Young have now been influencing each other both personally and professionally for 25 years, and both have kept on “Rockin in the Free World,” often side by side. In a 2003 Rolling Stone article, Vedder says, “One of the things I picked up from Neil was his writing. He was so aware of what you had to do to write the song when the spark came in. If something hits you, for just a split second, you stop everything, and you complete it. You don’t just write it on a napkin and, when you have time, flesh it out. You capture that bit of mercury and solidify it right there. That explains how he can be so prolific.”
11. Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts
Is patriotic love for Australia the basis for the friendship between the two Aussie ladies? Both began their friendship in high school in the land down under and have continued it for years since. Last year there were rumors that the two were no longer close and had experienced a rift due to their fiercely competitive natures, and the fact that Naomi Watts still remained friendly with Nicole Kidman’s ex-husband Tom Cruise. The two have both quashed these rumors, believed to have been started in Woman’s Day who reported the two barely talk. Sources close to both Nicole and Naomi confirm that the duo are both still very close, catching up on a regular basis despite living in different states (Kidman lives in Nashville, while Watts lives in LA).
10. David Beckham and Snoop Dogg
When David Beckham was “the new kid in town” after he and his family moved to LA, the footballer decided it was time to form some friendships in his new city. In 2012, when Snoop Dogg decided he wanted to invest in European soccer he connected with David to gain insight, and this former business venture quickly moved from networking into best friending. Beckham formed a fast friendship with rapper Snoop Dogg, and has even appeared on Snoop’s reality show, where the two played soccer. Apparently sources have seen David teaching Snoop’s kids a couple of soccer moves to really Bend it Like Beckham!
9. Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio
People may believe that this friendship blossomed from their roles in The Great Gatsby in 2014, but Tobey and Leo have been BFFs since they met at auditions in the late 1980s. DiCaprio has discussed immediately feeling like Maguire was going to be his best friend. When Leo saw him on his way home from school he insisted that they exchange numbers, the rest is history and the two have kept the bromance alive for over 25 years now. DiCaprio has told Huff Post Entertainment, “Every single choice I’ve made, I’ve talked to Tobey about and vice versa. We’ve had endless conversations about certain projects and argued with one another and supported one another along the way.” Leo has also been boasted as an amazing uncle to Tobey’s kids.
8. Kate Hudson and Liv Tyler
Kate Hudson and Liv Tyler both grew up surrounded by famous people and famous parents (Goldie Hawn and Steven Tyler) and ran in the same kid centric famous family circles. Then the two cemented their friendship when they attended the same high school together, Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences. Since graduation the two have remained close, even going on to star in the movie Dr. T & the Women where the pair of bestie beauties had an onscreen kiss. The two leading ladies continue to attend Hollywood events together.
7. Julia Roberts and George Clooney
People can’t stop talking about their “friendship goal” being to reach a level of closeness that Julia Roberts and George Clooney have enjoyed and maintained for over 15 years together as Hollywood besties since meeting on the set of Oceans 11 in 2001. The two routinely poke fun at each other, but are also very supportive of one another and their lives. When asked about Clooney’s wife Roberts told Extra, “I am quite enamored with her”, while Clooney was thrilled that his wife and BFF also enjoy each other’s company saying, “It was so much fun to have her meet my wife and have them be such good friends and hit it off so well.”
6. Drew Barrymore and Ellen Page
They worked together and became good friends. When Ellen Page came out of the closet rumors sparked that the two had been a couple in 2009, and they were much more than friends. Whether or not the duo were ever romantically connected doesn’t really matter, the two remain close and supportive friends, which is all anyone could ever ask for in their bestie. Page says of Drew Barrymore, “I first met Drew at the Chateau Marmont. And it was a surreal moment for me in my life. You could just feel her warmth and kindness immediately, and the way she carried herself was just so grounded. So then it was like, ‘Oh, this is going to be great.’ And then it went into, ‘Oh, my God, I’m really crazy about this person.’ It just grew and grew and grew and grew and grew.”
5. Michelle Williams and Busy Philipps
Many believe that Michelle and Busy met on the set of the show where they both starred, Dawson’s Creek, but the pair were actually introduced by a mutual friend “matchmaker” who thought the two would really hit it off. This friend can congratulate themselves on a match well made. Since the show ended in 2003, 13 years ago, the two remain very tightly knit. In 2015, the two rang in the New Year together in the Maldives. Philipps isn’t shy about boasting about how excited she gets when the duo get together, often posting photos of their meetings and vacations on Instagram, so we can all wish we were there alongside them!
4. Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak
We first “met” them on The Office as Kelly Kapoor and Ryan Howard as the on-again, off-again from hell, but there is something truly remarkable and amazing about the friendship between long-time friends and collaborators Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak. Despite the two actually being involved in an on again off again relationship in real life in the very early days of The Office, the two truly work well with and support each other. Kaling has told Howard Stern in an interview about Novak, “He’s legitimately one of my best friends, I love him, and I think he’s a great person. But I’m not holding a candle for B.J.” They are currently working on a book together in addition to their work on The Mindy Project and people everywhere are holding out for a When Harry Met Sally conclusion for the two and their envy-worthy friendship.
3. Barack Obama and Justin Trudeau
Canadians were super excited when handsome, Liberal leader, and soon to be cover model for Vogue, Justin Trudeau became their Prime Minister. It became quickly apparent that President Obama also wanted to be friends with the selfie-posing leader inviting him to the first White House dinner for a Canadian Prime Minister in many, many years. Since then the two have been seen laughing, sharing inside jokes, posing for pictures and even a failed attempt at creating a three way “secret” handshake for the “Three Amigos” countries alongside Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. Obama’s recent speech in Canada’s House of Commons marked the first by an American President since 1995, when President Bill Clinton spoke. The question is, will the bromance between these fast friends continue once the new president enters the Oval Office in just a few months?
2. Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake
A best friend who can make you laugh is worth their weight in gold and this is why we can’t get enough of the friendship between funny man Jimmy Fallon and his buddy Justin Timberlake. The two grew their friendships, like many, over the course of several Saturday nights, but for them it was the recurring skit on Saturday Night Live in 2003, 2005 and 2006 that would connect the two bosom buddies. Fallon himself was the creator of “Justin Timberweek” and the two both love to use the hashtags #bestiesforever and #dealwithitsamberg while they both genuinely seem to have a fantastically fun time whenever they’re together. These two are the kind of friends that friendship bracelets were created for, Best, Fabulous, Funny, Friends, Forever (BFFFF)!
1. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler
They met in the early 1990s at Chicago’s Improv Olympic when they were introduced to each other by the co-Founder, Charna Halpern. Charna says of the dynamic duo, “They were just instantly brilliant … They were not the typical women who get steamrolled by men. [They] were no shrinking violets. They were bold and ballsy and fearless.” In 2001, Amy finally agreed to join Saturday Night Live (Tina asked her to join for years, having moved to New York to write for the show in 1997). When she published her book Bossypants Tina Fey dedicated a chapter to her 20 year friendship (a few years later when Poehler wrote Yes, Please she dedicated a chapter to Fey called “Partner in Crime”). When giving a tour of Liz Lemon’s office in 30 Rock Fey has revealed that there is a framed copy of an issue of Bust magazine with bestie Poehler on the cover. The two even get mistaken for each other to this day. Poehler says, “”I am mistaken for Tina all the time. I recently renewed my license at the DMV and the African American woman asked me to do my Sarah Palin. She was confused and perhaps racist, but it only made me happy. I’m happy that people call me Tina because she is my friend and she happens to be crushing it.” They are both funny, supportive, and amazing women reshaping the face of comedy for women, so it’s only natural they do it together!
