Acting sure does take a lot of grit. Think about it – sometimes actors need to wear uncomfortable costumes, perform scary feats and actions (if they don’t have a stunt double, that is), and engage in some steamy romantic scenes. Have you ever thought about all that it takes to make an on-screen couple’s relationship look endearing and convincing?
You might even be surprised by some of these examples. After all, who would not want to kiss a guy like Robert Pattinson or a woman like Jennifer Lawrence? Well, we found some celebs who were definitely not looking forward to swapping saliva with them! And in some of these examples, we can understand why these actors would have some reservations about getting hot and steamy with other celebs. As you go through this list, you will see that some celebrities have questionable personal hygiene habits, or they have unhealthy lifestyles that make being in close contact with them a pain in the butt! And then there are other celebrities who may look so dreamy and romantic, but according to their co-stars, they really need to brush up on their kissing skills!
Would you believe that kissing is an art form? It really is, and without the right chemistry and practice, it can cause some awkwardness in front of the camera!
15. Shailene Woodley & Miles Teller
Before Miles Teller made a name for himself in Whiplash, he starred in 2013’s The Spectacular Now alongside Shailene Woodley. The film was underrated and ending up being quite a success; a coming-of-age story for today’s generation. Miles and Amy end up being star-crossed lovers who meet in the most unexpected way. And yes, a romance does blossom and features quite a bit of intimacy as well. The actors make it look so convincing, even perfectly portraying what it feels like for a teenager to be in love. And yet, in reality, it was difficult for both of them to kiss so much. That’s because Shailene has a very “natural” lifestyle, and she likes to guzzle smelly herbs and even dirt! Miles found her foul stench to be atrocious, so he got back at her by chugging sugary drinks and eating junk food. Sounds playful, but it made filming those intimate scenes quite a pain!
14. Julia Roberts & Nick Nolte
These two celebs already had a long-standing history of hating each other; that’s almost a fact of Hollywood. Anyway, back when they were filming I Love Trouble, it was quickly made clear that Julia and Nick had absolutely no common ground to walk on. Yet they were already signed on to the movie, so they did it for the love of acting. Sort of. Julia and Nick have spoken about their experience filming I Love Trouble, and the truth is that there was a whole lot of trouble going on behind the scenes. Julia and Nick would avoid each other whenever they could; so much so that they started to film their scenes separately (which really must have agitated the director.) Any kind of touching or physical intimacy was going to make them barf, but they managed to do it anyway. We suppose that is the sign of a true artist, huh?
13. Rachel McAdams & Ryan Gosling
Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling starred in The Notebook in 2004, and it was a much-anticipated movie adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ romantic novel of the same name. If you watch the movie, you will laugh, you will cry, and you will probably think that Rachel and Ryan had really good chemistry. But, behind the scenes, things were a different story. It turned out that Rachel and Ryan had a lot of disagreements and they would constantly nit-pick each other. It even got so bad that they raised their voices at each other and got into on-set spats a few times. It wasn’t until they both decided to be adults that they were able to go through with the movie – including that ever popular kissing scene in the rain. In a twist of events, Rachel and Ryan actually ended up dating in real life, so they really did put their differences aside!
12. Josh Hutcherson & Jennifer Lawrence
For The Hunger Games movie franchise, Josh and Jennifer had to get quite cozy – a lot. After all, they were the cutest movie couple that audiences had seen in awhile, plus both of the actors are widely popular with children, teens, and adults. So it was perfect! Right? Well, not exactly. Sure, Peeta and Katniss first start out awkwardly trying to pretend that they are head over heels in love with each other. It seems that they didn’t really need to do much acting for the pretending part! No matter how much people loved the Peeta-Katniss romance, in real life, Josh and Jennifer were just platonic friends. However when their characters became more intimately involved, things were a bit messier – literally! Josh said that Jennifer gave him sloppy kisses, which made him a bit apprehensive whenever a romantic scene was coming on. Yet all four of The Hunger Games movies ended up being huge successes.
11. Emma Watson & Rupert Grint
Finally, the shippers of Hermione and Ron got the pairing they were waiting for. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, these two characters kissed passionately, and for some it was all that they’d been dreaming of. However, after the camera stopped rolling, the film was released, and the interviews started, Emma revealed that kissing Rupert was “the weirdest.” We can understand that. After all, these are two friends who have been acting together since they were barely adolescents. They were definitely friends, but romance was something that just wasn’t going to happen between them. Therefore, it took some rock-solid acting skills to pull of the Hermione-Ron courtship. Emma also explained that Rupert is more of a shy and quiet kind of guy, so she never really knew what he was thinking about the kiss! If Hermione ended up with Harry (which many, including J.K. Rowling would have liked), Emma would have felt less awkward about it because Daniel Radcliffe is more vocal.
10. Amanda Seyfried & Megan Fox
As some of you know, Megan Fox is bisexual, so you would think that she would be turned on by her girl-on-girl makeout scene with Amanda Seyfried in Jennifer’s Body. Yet, things were a bit more complicated than that. Both Megan and Amanda saw the excessive kissing as a Hollywood ploy to get more exposure for the movie, so that more people would come out to see it. In the end, Jennifer’s Body ended up getting very poor reviews, and Megan (nor Amanda) really enjoyed filming it. In fact, both actresses thought it was really funny and they had trouble containing their chuckling while trying to film the scene. This caused the director to get upset and frustrated, but that’s what you get when you force actresses to do something they don’t want to do! Megan’s open sexuality made her more comfortable with the script, but Amanda definitely felt uneasy about her family watching it!
9. Alyson Hannigan & Jason Segel
Alyson and Jason’s characters were a popular couple on How I Met Your Mother, but as the kissing scenes increased more and more, Alyson was getting fed up. She already didn’t want to kiss Jason because he was a heavy smoker, and that made each moment that she had to get close to him stinky and uncomfortable. Each time she had to kiss him was like licking an ashtray of cigarette butts. She opened up about this and told Jason that it was really awkward and gross to kiss his tobacco-littered tongue and lips. Jason actually took it quite gracefully and he decided to quit smoking for good. Hey, so something really great came out of this! Who knows? Maybe Alyson helped to add a few more years to Jason’s life. Putting all of that aside, How I Met Your Mother was a famed TV series for nine seasons, so the actors were doing something right!
8. Reese Witherspoon & Robert Pattinson
Yes, we know what women all over the world are thinking: how could a girl not want to kiss Robert Pattinson?! Well, what if he had a cold and was dripping boogers all over the place? Yeah, that is what happened when Reese Witherspoon was starring in Water for Elephants with Robert Pattinson. Besides that, there was a large age gap between the two actors, which could make for some awkward interactions, especially when they had to get cozy and intimate. Even so, the biggest challenge for Reese was kissing Robert as he was continually sniffling and wiping his runny nose. Gross. The 2-hour romance ended up receiving so-so film reviews, although it was widely accepted among teen audiences, and we think we know why. Two words: Robert Pattinson. To Reese’s credit, she did do a good job in the film. She assumed the role of a circus performer who falls in love with a younger man.
7. James McAvoy & Angelina Jolie
The 2008 film Wanted wasn’t what film critics wanted, and it received sub-standard review, which was a shame because it starred two great actors. Scotland’s James McAvoy is a reputable actor, and Angelina Jolie is, well, Angelina Jolie. Yet, Wanted ended up being awkward and without much feeling, and that’s probably because James felt uncomfortable around Angelina for much of the filming. For one thing, there was a romantic scene right off the bat. James’ number one reason for not wanting to kiss Angelina Jolie was understandable: he had just met her. Seriously though, James and Angelina introduced themselves to each other for the first time and then had to jump right into the kissing scene. Why it was the first scene to film is beyond us, because we would not direct actors to get intimate right when they first meet. Maybe that’s what happens when you have a Russian director!
6. Tony Curtis & Marilyn Monroe
Now this here is an interesting one because Tony and Marilyn had actually had a romantic rendezvous back when they were in their younger years. When the two of them got together to film Some Like It Hot, most people would think that it was a match made in Hollywood. However, Tony no longer had feelings for Marilyn and it turned out that he abhorred her kissing behavior, saying that it was similar to “kissing Hitler” (not that he would know what that feels like). Anyway, Tony said that Marilyn was a sloppy kisser, and it almost seemed like she was deliberately trying to make it as uncomfortable as possible for him. According to Tony, Marilyn would try to give him lots of tongue action, which he definitely didn’t want. And if you’ve ever been in a situation where you were kissing someone innocently and they decided to jam their tongue into your mouth, you can understand his pain.
5. Helena Bonham Carter & Woody Allen
Well, come on, would you want to kiss Woody Allen? Yeah, we didn’t think so. When it came to being intimate with Woody in the film Mighty Aphrodite, Helena said that it was one of the most tedious tasks to do during filming. First of all, she was not too keen on giving him lip service to begin with, and we all know how creepy Woody is, especially around females. Secondly, Woody straight up told Helena how she should kiss, already putting an awkward and resentful spin on things. It really is no wonder that she was not looking forward to kissing this guy. Even with all of the intimate awkwardness and it being an Indie film, Mighty Aphrodite managed to amass some nice critiques from filmgoers and professionals. It even won 10 awards! Woody was nominated for Best Original Screenplay by the Writers Guild of America. If only they knew Helena’s struggle!
4. Thandie Newton & Tom Cruise
Yeah, Tom Cruise might be a stunning gentleman for some women, but definitely not for his co-star Thandie Newton! The English actress had very little in common with Tom, and the kissing scene in Mission: Impossible II was just really awkward and kind of difficult to watch. It could definitely be nominated for one of the worst on-screen kisses in movie history. Besides not really feeling any emotion from or for Tom, Thandie also said that his kissing abilities were pretty sub-par. She later explained that the kiss was wet and “icky.” Audiences seemed to notice that their on-screen intimacy was lacking a certain flavor. It was quite lifeless and without any kind of passion, making it no fun to watch (so you can imagine how much less enjoyable it was to film!) Nevertheless, Tom went on to star in another three Mission: Impossible films – without any kissing scenes alongside Thandie.
3. Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper
Can you believe that J-Law didn’t want to kiss Bradley Cooper? And yet, their ending kissing scene in Silver Linings Playbook ended up being awarded an MTV Movie Award for “Best Kiss.” What a strange turn of events! Maybe that just goes to show that Jennifer and Bradley are two very good actors. In fact, they have starred in a number of films together, so it seems that the kissing has improved. However, at the start, it was in Silver Linings Playbook that Jennifer had her first kiss with Bradley, which she described as wet and gross. Being Jennifer Lawrence, she mentioned it to him immediately, and they must have practiced (hubbahubba) because they went on to star in more kissing scenes together. We also find it quite comical that Jennifer was the one critiquing Bradley’s kissing when in The Hunger Games films, Josh Hutcherson said that Jen wasn’t too good a kisser!
2. Tobey Maguire & Kirsten Dunst
Whether you were a superhero fan or not, you probably went to see this film. 2002’s Spider-Man starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst had that rainy kissing scene that everyone seems to remember. And yet, it really wasn’t all that romantic. Think about it: Tobey was wearing a tight spandex suit and was having rain poured all over him, plus he was hanging upside down. The only thing he remembers from that scene is how horrible and uncomfortable it felt! He was really dreading doing the whole scene, and while it may not have been because of Kirsten directly, all of the elements came together to make Tobey want to cut and run. What made it worse was that Kirsten pulled his Spider-Man mask off, which caused the air flow from his nostrils to be cut off, so he was pretty much over there drowning in his snot and rain water.
1. Patrick Swayze & Jennifer Grey
Ah, the pivotal film Dirty Dancing. It would have been every girl’s dream back in 1987 to have a piece of Patrick Swayze. As for the actor, he might have preferred a different co-star other than Jennifer Grey. Apparently, Jennifer was overly sensitive, and her thin skin caused her to get upset at the drop of a hat. That meant that any time the director had a piece of criticism for her, Jennifer would break down into tears. This made recording the movie quite draining and tedious. Patrick started to resent that character flaw in Jennifer, so when it came to the romantic kissing scene, he wasn’t too happy about faking the intimacy. Even so, things ended up being absolutely fabulous in the end, with Dirty Dancing being an iconic hit film of the 1980s (well, really of all time!) It created a lasting legacy that is still carried out in film and television today.
