A lot of people live by a personal code to never date people that they work with. Most abide by this rule so they don’t have to worry about any of the baggage that could saddle them down later in the relationship. Not every coupling ends in bliss and marital happiness. Many people are worried that they might not have a good time on their first date with a co-worker, and then work is awkward and strange for a while. It’s also possible that you might hit it off with a co-worker, get into a serious relationship for a number of years, and then separate due to something like an unfaithful partner. These types of break-ups can often end up with the hurt half of the couple wanting their friends to choose sides. This could be especially dicey in a work environment. It also might be humiliating for the other half to be cheated on in front of their co-workers. This whole situation can be made even worse if someone in the relationship is unfaithful to their partner with another co-worker. It’s just best to not date the people you work with.
Despite the problems that can arise out of dating co-workers, a lot of people go ahead and do it anyway, even in Hollywood. Perhaps stars are less afraid of all the things that can go wrong because working on a specific movie or show on and individual basis doesn’t last forever. Eventually, you and the other person won’t necessarily be working together. In Hollywood, dating a co-worker isn’t so bad since it’s only a matter of time before you’re out of the work situation.
Even though dating co-workers might be a little easier in the acting profession, some weird things still arise from it, like perhaps the fellow thespian you’ve become involved with plays your brother, sister, or even your mother or father. This can be especially jarring for hardcore fans of your work to see, and it might make it harder for the actor or actress to get into character when they have romantic feelings for someone playing their sibling!
Let’s take a look at some of these instances where a Hollywood couple played family members in one of their projects.
14. Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick – Loverboy
Loverboy is a film about a woman who grew up in a home with parents so involved with themselves that their daughter went largely ignored. As a result, the woman explains to her son why she loves him so much and why she is such a hands-on parent as a result of her own past. They reflect on their life together through stories and flashbacks.
In the film, Kyra Sedgwick plays the main character. Her father in the film is played by her longtime husband Kevin Bacon, who also directed the film. On top of this, their daughter Sosie Bacon played Kyra’s character as a young girl.
13. Jason Priestley and Shannen Doherty – Beverly Hills, 90210
If you were a teenager in the year 1990, you probably got swept up into the lives of the teens from area code 90210 whether you wanted to or not. Everyone was talking about this series from Aaron Spelling. Heck, sideburns and pompadours even made a short comeback. The actors from the series Beverly Hills, 90210 were constantly talked about in the gossip magazines of their day.
Early in the show’s ten season run, stars Jason Priestly and Shannen Doherty were dating. Seeing the two together was a little alarming to some fans considering Jason and Shannen played siblings Brandon and Brenda Walsh respectively.
12. Milo Ventimigila and Hayden Panettiere – Heroes
The funny thing about this one-time celebrity couple is that fans shipped them together within the universe of the show as well.
Despite the fact that Claire Bennett and Peter Petrelli were established as a blood-related uncle and niece due to a paternity scandal in the television show Heroes, many fans of the show still wanted to see the characters get together. This is probably just a side-effect of people not being able to let go of the time before they found out about Claire’s true parentage.
During the first season of the series (arguably the height of its popularity during the four season run), fans sort of got their wish when Milo and Hayden began dating in the real world.
11. Peter Krause and Lauren Graham – Parenthood
Parenthood is a rather popular show that is closing in on its series finale. The show follows the antics of different factions of the Braverman family as they navigate their way through life’s blessings and obstacles. The show is actually the second series to be based on the original film that starred Steve Martin and Mary Steenburgen.
In the show, Lauren Graham and Peter Krause play brother and sister Adam and Sarah Braverman. Since meeting on the show, Lauren and Peter began dating. The relationship is serious enough that Graham has said they are practically married. She also likes to use their connection in the show to make jokes that she is dating her brother.
10. Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter – Dexter
It isn’t too surprising that Michael C. Hall dated his onscreen sister played by Jennifer Carpenter in the Showtime television series Dexter. Despite playing siblings, the two characters actually had a rather strange chemistry on the show. Perhaps this was done intentionally since the characters were actually adopted siblings.
In the series, Michael C. Hall plays a serial killer (Dexter) that was taken in by a police officer. Somehow, the officer knew Dexter might end up as a serial killer due to witnessing a horrific event when he was no more than a toddler. Dexter’s adoptive father teaches him how to keep his tracks clean and has him specifically go after other killers. Dexter’s sister eventually becomes a police officer as well.
9. Robert Pattinson and Nikki Reed – Twilight
In the Twilight films, Robert Pattinson plays a vampire named Edward Cullen. Edward is totally hung up on the film series’ female protagonist, human Isabella Swan, who was portrayed by Kristen Stewart. To the delight of many fans of the series that played for “Team Edward”, Pattinson and Stewart began dating in real life for quite some time.
Before Pattinson began seeing co-star Kristen Stewart, he had actually dated another one of his Twilight co-stars, actress Nikki Reed. In the Twilight series, Nikki Reed plays Rosalie Hale, the adopted sister of Edward Cullen and his other siblings, Jasper and Alice.
It’s been said that Pattinson actually left Reed specifically to get with Stewart. One has to wonder if this caused any on-set drama.
8. David Tennant and Georgia Moffet – Doctor Who
During the episodes of Doctor Who that featured David Tennant as The Tenth Doctor (the “tenth” meaning the tenth regenerated body of the same Doctor, not the tenth in a line of Doctors) the Doctor inadvertently gave birth to a fully grown adult daughter. This was achieved by a device that created artificial humans from a single parent that could be used in an ongoing war. Tissue from the Doctor was used against his will, creating his daughter Jenny (played by Georgia Moffet), and keeping the Doctor from being the only member of his species left in the universe.
In real-life, Tennant ended up marrying the woman that played his daughter in the series. The two have also given birth to a child, Wilfred Tennant.
7. Selena Gomez and David Henrie – Wizards of Waverly Place
In the series Wizards of Waverly Place, David Henrie and Selena Gomez played brother and sister Justin and Alex Russo, respectively. They, along with their other brother Max, discover that their father is a wizard and begin taking home school classes to learn the art of wizardry. There is one catch: only one kid in each family can go on to remain a wizard.
The series was a rather popular one for The Disney Channel. So popular that the reason David Henrie and Selena Gomez kept their relationship short, casual, and hush-hush is they didn’t know if some viewers might find it weird to see “Alex” and “Justin” together like that. It also isn’t rare to find a viewer of the series that felt something mildly incestuous was going on between Alex and Justin anyway!
6. Chris Pratt and Emily VanCamp – Everwood
In a seemingly short amount of time, Chris Pratt has gone from television star to a bona fide blockbuster movie star with lead roles in The Lego Movie, Guardians of the Galaxy, and the upcoming Jurassic World. Currently he is married to actress Anna Faris.
Before Chris Pratt became known as a Hollywood A-lister, he was a part of the drama series Everwood that ran for four seasons between 2002 and 2006. Pratt played Bright Abbott on the series. His character’s sister, Amy Abbott, was played by Emily VanCamp. While playing brother and sister on the series, Pratt and VanCamp dated for quite some time.
5. David Duchovny and Tea Leoni – House of D
David Duchovny and Tea Leoni have actually been husband and wife for quite a long period of time. In fact, they are one of the few pairings on the list that didn’t meet while working on the film in which they played relatives. The couple only recently divorced after two children and 17 years of marriage.
In 2004, Duchovny wrote, directed, and starred in the film House of D. For whatever reason, Duchovny decided to cast Tea Leoni to play his character’s mother in flashbacks. Film critic Richard Roeper described this choice in casting as something “that would knock Freud off his chair.”
4. Amy Poehler and Will Arnett – Blades of Glory
This pairing is another one of the small handful of couples that didn’t meet on the set of the film in which they played relatives. Will Arnett and Amy Poehler were already the ultimate married couple in comedy before their role in Blades of Glory.
In this comedy film about partner’s figure skating, Will and Amy play Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg, two halves of a brother and sister figure skating duo. In the film, there are very heavy handed hints at an incestuous relationship between the two skaters. It can be assumed that a married couple was cast for the two roles for exactly this reason.
3. Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Grey- Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Most of us are probably more familiar with Matthew Broderick being married to former Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker. In the earlier years of his career, Broderick was a huge name and had yet to meet Sarah.
While filming Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, you would think that Broderick may have forged a relationship with Mia Sara, the actress that played his on-screen girlfriend Simone. In reality, Bueller ended up dating Jennifer Grey, the actress that played Ferris’s sister Jeanie Bueller. As an added bonus, Cindy Pickett and Lyman Ward, the actors that played the Bueller parents, would end up getting married outside of the classic comedy film as well.
2. David Mann and Tamela Mann – Meet the Browns
David and Tamela Mann is the final couple on the list that were already married or together as opposed to meeting on the set of the film or show in which they played some kind of a relative. On the TBS series Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns, David and Tamela play Leroy Brown and Cora Simmons respectively. The series is about the adult Cora moving back home to live with her family. The show is based on the film of the same name. David is actually playing a character much older than he actually is, as he and his wife Tamela are both the same age.
David and Tamela also play the characters in a number of other plays, shows, and movies from director and writer Tyler Perry.
1. John Travolta and Diana Hyland – The Boy in the Plastic Bubble
One of John Travolta’s earliest films was a television movie he filmed about a boy with a rare condition that forced him to live his life in a sterile environment encased in a large plastic bubble. The film is one of those terrible flicks that are so bad they’re good.
In the film, Travolta’s mom was portrayed by actress Diana Hyland. Travolta and Hyland began a romantic relationship after meeting while working on the film, despite the fact that Hyland was 18 years John’s senior.
Shortly after their relationship had begun in 1976, Hyland was diagnosed with breast cancer. Travolta moved in with Diana to help take care of her medical bills and take care of her son. Sadly, Hyland passed away in 1977 while Travolta was away shooting Saturday Night Fever.
